Search for gamma‐ray emission from AGN with COMPTEL

    Get PDF
The COMPTEL data (∌0.7–30 MeV) were searched for emission from AGN. Four sources have been detected so far: the quasars 3C 273, 3C 279, PKS 0528+134, and the radio galaxy Centaurus A. 3C 273 and 3C 279 were detected in CGRO observation period 3 with quite different spectral shapes. There is also evidence for 3C 273 at a weak flux level in observation period 11. The quasar PKS 0528+134 was detected above 3 MeV as part of a search for AGN already observed by EGRET. Cen A was seen up to 3 MeV by combining data from different observation periods

Nucleosynthesis and Gamma-Ray Line Spectroscopy with INTEGRAL

Cosmic nucleosynthesis co-produces unstable isotopes, which emit characteristic gamma-ray emission lines upon their radioactive decay that can be measured with SPI on INTEGRAL. High spectral resolution allows to derive velocity constraints on nucleosynthesis ejecta down to ~100 km/s. Core-collapse supernovae apparently do not always produce significant amounts of 44Ti, as in the Galaxy fewer sources than expected from the supernova rate have been found. INTEGRAL's 44Ti data on the well-observed Cas A and SN1987A events are evidence that non-spherical explosions and 44Ti production may be correlated. Characteristic gamma-ray lines from radioactive decays of long-lived 26Al and 60Fe isotopes have been exploited to obtain information on the structure and dynamics of massive stars in their late evolution and supernovae, as their yields are sensitive to those details. The extended INTEGRAL mission establishes a database of sufficiently-deep observations of several specific regions of massive star groups, such as Cygnus, Carina, and Sco-Cen. In the inner Galaxy, 26Al nucleosynthesis gamma-rays help to unravel the Galaxy's structure and the role of a central bar, as the kinematically-shifted 26Al gamma-ray line energy records the longitude-velocity behavior of hot interstellar gas. Thus, INTEGRAL has consolidated the feasibility of constraining cosmic nucleosynthesis through gamma-ray line observations. Due to its extended mission INTEGRAL maintains its chance to also see rare sufficiently-nearby events, such as a nova to provide first nova nucleosynthesis measurements of 7Be and 22Na production.Comment: Conference "The extreme and variable high-energy sky", Italy Sep 2011. 10 pages, 4 figure

Death or survival. Post-communist bankruptcy law in action. A survey

The paper discusses some major lessons to be learnt from the application of bankruptcy law in a post-communist environment. Its focus is on East Central Europe because elsewhere bankruptcy law is of rather limited practical relevance. The incentives and the selection of trustees turn out to be key issues if the loss of value typically occuring during bankruptcy procedures is to be contained within reasonable limits. Reorganization is a realistic option only if management has sufficient incentives to file bankruptcy in time. Post-communist legislation has tried to achieve this mostly by threat of punishment. This approach has proved inefficient. The paper also criticizes the tendency of post-communist legislation to deemphasize individual remedies against defaulting debtors.

Impaired regulation of emotion: Neural correlates of reappraisal and distraction in bipolar disorder and unaffected relatives

Deficient emotion regulation has been proposed as a crucial pathological mechanism in bipolar disorder (BD). We therefore investigated emotion regulation impairments in BD, the related neural underpinnings and their etiological relevance for the disorder. Twenty-two euthymic patients with bipolar-I disorder and 17 unaffected first-degree relatives of BD-I patients, as well as two groups of healthy gender-, age- and education-matched controls (N=22/17, respectively) were included. Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while applying two different emotion regulation techniques, reappraisal and distraction, when presented with emotional images. BD patients and relatives showed impaired downregulation of amygdala activity during reappraisal, but not during distraction, when compared with controls. This deficit was correlated with the habitual use of reappraisal. The negative connectivity of amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) observed during reappraisal in controls was reversed in BD patients and relatives. There were no significant differences between BD patients and relatives. As being observed in BD patients and unaffected relatives, deficits in emotion regulation through reappraisal may represent heritable neurobiological abnormalities underlying BD. The neural mechanisms include impaired control of amygdala reactivity to emotional stimuli and dysfunctional connectivity of the amygdala to regulatory control regions in the OFC. These are, thus, important aspects of the neurobiological basis of increased vulnerability for BD

The Impact of the War 1991: 1995 on the Croatian Economy: A Contribution to the Analysis of War Economies

The economics of the Croatian war differ considerably from what is often thought of as typical features of a war economy. Most strikingly, while wars are often perceived as generating a tendency towards repressed inflation and a command economy the Croatian economy actually moved in the opposite direction. Croatia "nevertheless" won the war. This has prompted some to think of the war as matter of minor relevance for Croatian economic development in the nineties. The paper argues that this view is mistaken. Croatia offers an opportunity to reconsider the macroeconomics of regional wars. This reconsideration demonstrates the power of the new classical framework.

COMPTEL upper limits for Seyfert galaxies

    Get PDF
The gamma‐ray emission of Seyfert galaxies has fallen far short of pre‐GRO expectations. No single object of this class has been detected by either COMPTEL or EGRET, and OSSE has detected only a fraction of the Seyferts expected. To derive a more stringent upper limit to the emission from these objects in the energy ranges 0.75 to 1 and 1 to 3 MeV, we have summed a large number of COMPTEL observations acquired during Phase 1 of the GRO mission. From a total of 47 observations of 23 individual X‐ray selected Seyfert galaxies, we derive preliminary upper limits of 8×10−8 photons/(cm2 s keV) in the 0.75‐1 MeV band and 1×10−8 photons/(cm2 s keV) in the 1‐3 MeV band
