The Sentiment Hidden in Italian Texts Through the Lens of A New Dictionary

Resumen de la comunicación[EN] The aim of this work is to propose a strategy to classify texts (or parts of them) in an ordinal emotional scale to gauge a sentiment indicator in every domain. In particular, we develop a new dictionary for the Italian language which is built using an objective method where the polarities of synonyms and antonyms are accounted for in an iterative process. To build our sentiment indicator negations and intensifiers are also used, thus considering the context in which the single word is written. We apply our new dictionary to extract the sentiment from a set of around 40 issues of the Bank of Italy quarterly Economic Bulletin. Our results show that our strategy is able to correctly identify the sentiment expressed in the Bulletins, which is correlated to the main macroeconomic variables (such as national GDP, investment, consumption or unemployment rate). Our analysis shows that sentiment represents not only an evaluation of the stylistic way in which texts are written, but also a valid synthesis of all the external factors analysed in the same document.Bruno, G.; Marcucci, J.; Mattiocco, A.; Scarnò, M.; Sforzini, D. User's behaviour inside a digital library

CASPUR allows many academic Italian institutions located in the Centre-South of Italy to access more than 7 million of articles through a digital library platform. We analyzed the behaviour of its users by considering their "traces" stored into the web server log file. Using several Web Mining and Data Mining techniques we discovered that there is a gradual and dynamic change in the way how articles are accessed; in particular there is evidence of a Journal browsing increase in comparison to the searching mode. We interpreted such phenomenon by considering that browsing better meets the need of users when they want to keep abreast about the latest advances in their scientific field, in comparison to a more generic searching inside the digital library

L’esplorazione del comportamento degli utenti dell’Emeroteca Virtuale del CASPUR tramite metodologie statistiche

By observing file logs of the system delivering “Emeroteca Virtuale” (Digital Library) service at CASPUR it’s possible to argue users behaviour towards scholarly e-journals. As a first step it is important evaluating and getting from these logs only these messages that bring valid and coherent information; several approaches are proposed in literature, that need to be adapted to our current context. We start this presentation analyzing a few of these and their applications to our digital library service. A more complete analysis approach is then adopted as we get more informative data on users’ activities, focussing especially on research sessions (in order to derive users’ attitudes and habits). We suppose in fact that users’ vs service interaction relies onto two main different factors: specific user’s interest and e-journals attributes (publishers’ categories, print date, etc.). We derive as a last remark a users classification methodology, based on their ways of interacting with the remote system

Il servizio di EV-mobile ed i suoi utenti: un approccio metodologico all’analisi dei loro comportamenti

ItLa possibilità di accedere al Web mediante dispositivi mobili, ad esempio tablet o smartphone, ha comportato la creazione di ulteriori portali, semplificati, che consentono di diffondere contenuti ed informazione in maniera rapida ai propri utenti. Nel caso del servizio di Emeroteca Virtuale Mobile si è voluto ampliare la gamma dei servizi offerti all’utenza, includendo una piattaforma che fosse navigabile attraverso i browser disponibili nei moderni smart phone. L’analisi dei loro comportamenti ci ha permesso di verificare quanto gli utenti preferiscano i contesti mobili come ambienti di rapida verifica delle novità disponibili in Emeroteca, relativamente ai periodici di loro interesse (4 a 1 è infatti il rapporto tra la navigazione e la ricerca dei contenuti). Ciò chiarisce il ruolo che tale servizio sta assumendo nel contesto dell’Emeroteca, non alternativo a quello classico, ma, pur se ancora non privo di una sua connotazione sperimentale, certamente complementare a quest’ultimo.EnThe diffusion of the so called smart-phone and tablet among WEB users community caused a growth in the offering of specific portals, simplified comparing to the classic ones, but capable of a more direct and fast information flow towards their own users. Emeroteca Virtuale service too has been provided of a specific “mobile” portal dedicated to people having a smart-phone as a web access tool. Last two years usage data analysis on this service has revealed a peculiar behavior of Emeroteca Virtuale Mobile users: they tend to use the service as a rapid check of new entries in Emeroteca (issues or articles), specifically for those e-journals they are interested in (the ratio between browsing and search actions is 4 to 1). This clarifies better the role this “mobile” service is having versus the classical one: it is not an alternative to it, but a complementary way to get information from Emeroteca

La raccolta dei dati è un’operazione che avviene, al giorno d’oggi e nei contesti propri del CASPUR, in tempi infinitesimali con il risultato di poter disporre di un’enorme quantità d’informazione. Questa è spesso “sparsa” (si pensi al web) e “multiforme” (uno stesso fenomeno può essere rappresentato, ad esempio nella Bioinformatica, sia da una serie di valori numerici sia da un’immagine fotografica). Sul versante logico e operativo tali osservazioni modificano le strategie di analisi dell’informazione, rendendo necessarie competenze “trasversali” ai differenti settori disciplinari, tali da permettere l’uso di metodologie articolate, “poli-tecniche”, che agiscono in sequenza o in concorrenza secondo appropriate strategie
