Model assisted approaches to complex survey sampling from finite populations using Bayesian Networks

A class of estimators based on the dependency structure of a multivariate variable of interest and the survey design is defined. The dependency structure is the one described by the Bayesian networks. This class allows ratio type estimators as a subclass identified by a particular dependency structure. It will be shown by a Monte Carlo simulation how the adoption of the estimator corresponding to the population structure is more efficient than the others. It will also be underlined how this class adapts to the problem of integration of information from two surveys through probability updating system of the Bayesian networks.Graphical models, probability update, survey design

L’Associazione Italiana di Cartografia e il suo Bollettino. Cinquanta anni di vita e di storia cartografica

In occasione del cinquantenario della fondazione dell’Associazione Italiana di Cartografia, viene fatto il punto sull’evoluzione della cartografia con i mutamenti, le innovazioni e le trasformazioni più significative dell’intera filiera che hanno visto la graduale affermazione del formato digitale a scapito di quello tradizionale. Viene segnalato il crescente interesse scientifico nei confronti del Bollettino dell’AIC, da sempre osservatore privilegiato dei processi legati alla produzione, alla diffusione e all’utilizzo della carta, fino alla recente affermazione di rivista qualificata per la ricerca scientifica italiana.On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Italian Association of Cartography, we want to define he evolution, changes and innovations occurred in Cartography studies and instruments in this last fifty years. The most significant transformations of the entire sector have been the gradual emergence of the digital format at the expense of traditional map. The increasing scientific interest in the AIC Bulletin is pointed out. This review has always been the privileged observer of the processes related to the production, diffusion and use of the map, until the recent achievement as a qualified journal for the Italian scientific research

An exact macroscopic extended model with many moments

Extended Thermodynamics is a very important theory: for example, it predicts hyperbolicity, finite speeds of propagation waves as well as continuous dependence on initial data. Therefore, it constitutes a significative improvement of ordinary thermodynamics. Here its methods are applied to the case of an arbitrary, but fixed, number of moments. The kinetic approach has already been developed in literature; then, the macroscopic approach is here considered and the constitutive functions appearing in the balance equations are determined up to whatever order with respect to thermodynamical equilibrium. The results of the kinetic approach are a particular case of the present ones

Santu Lussurgiu: un volto da un'immagine

Si fornisce la descrizione dettagliata di Santu Lussurgiu utilizzando lo strumento cartografico, che meglio di altri permette di cogliere aspetti complessivi o dettagli del territorio, vedute di paesaggi difficilmente rilevabili, comparazioni altrimenti impossibili. In particolare, ad un occhio attento, la carta geografica consente di leggere ciò che la visione diretta difficilmente permette. La rappresentazione cartografica consente infatti al lettore di fare proprio il territorio pur non avendo conoscenza diretta dei luoghi, concede alcune peculiarità ambientali, le più salienti, o tratti particolari del paesaggio come risultato di un processo costruttivo che è maturato nel tempo ed a cui ha contribuito da una parte la natura e dall'altra gli uomini
