    Some implications of sampling choices on comparisons between satellite and model aerosol optical depth fields

    The comparison of satellite and model aerosol optical depth (AOD) fields provides useful information on the strengths and weaknesses of both. However, the sampling of satellite and models is very different and some subjective decisions about data selection and aggregation must be made in order to perform such comparisons. This work examines some implications of these decisions, using GlobAerosol AOD retrievals at 550 nm from Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) measurements, and aerosol fields from the GEOS-Chem chemistry transport model. It is recommended to sample the model only where the satellite flies over on a particular day; neglecting this can cause regional differences in model AOD of up to 0.1 on monthly and annual timescales. The comparison is observed to depend strongly upon thresholds for sparsity of satellite retrievals in the model grid cells. Requiring at least 25% coverage of the model grid cell by satellite data decreases the observed difference between the two by approximately half over land. The impact over ocean is smaller. In both model and satellite datasets, there is an anticorrelation between the proportion <i>p</i> of a model grid cell covered by satellite retrievals and the AOD. This is attributed to small <i>p</i> typically occuring due to high cloud cover and lower AODs being found in large clear-sky regions. Daily median AATSR AODs were found to be closer to GEOS-Chem AODs than daily means (with the root mean squared difference being approximately 0.05 smaller). This is due to the decreased sensitivity of medians to outliers such as cloud-contaminated retrievals, or aerosol point sources not included in the model

    Acute bronchitis in Australian general practice - a prescription too far?

    OBJECTIVE: To quantify how frequently general practitioners in Australia prescribe antibiotics for acute bronchitis, which antibiotics are used, and whether there are subgroups of patients who might benefit from their use. DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective descriptive study using 3 sets of data: Australian Sentinel Practice Research Network, the Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health (BEACH) Program, and the General Practice Research Network (GPRN). RESULTS: Over 50% of all patients with ‘acute bronchitis’ had either chest or one or more systemic signs on physical examination. The rate of antibiotic prescribing for acute bronchitis was 79.6% of acute bronchitis visits using BEACH data 2001–2002 and varied from 68.6 (95% CI: 62.8–74.5%) in 2001 to 78.7 (95% CI: 72.2–85.2%) in 1999 using GPRN data. Penicillins, followed by macrolides, were the most commonly prescribed antibiotics. DISCUSSION: Australian GPs frequently prescribe antibiotics for ‘acute bronchitis’ despite guidelines to the contrary. One reason may be that many patients present with chest or systemic signs.N.P.     Immunopathological aspects of trypanosomal meningoencephalitis in vervet monkeys after relapse following BerenilR treatment

    Four quarantined vervet monkeys were treated with intramuscular BerenilR in patent CNS infection after experimental trypanosome inoculation with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense or T. brucei brucei. All four animals relapsed in the post-therapeutic survival time of 37 to 209 days when they had fully developed meningoencephalitis in histological sections with the presence of interstitial intracerebral trypanosomes, which were confirmed in two monkeys by electron microscopy. In both, sequential samples of the serum and cerebrospinal fluid were analysed for circulating immune complexes, immunoglobulins and albumin. From these results the intracerebral IgG synthesis and the impairment of the blood-brain-barrier were calculated, both being present in advanced infection. Circulating immune complexes were present in the serum, but could not be demonstrated in the cerebrospinal fluid. The monkey model therefore permits the study of various aspects of cerebral trypanosomiasis. BerenilR treatment is inefficient in patent CNS infection and leads to a protracted, less virulent disease course with terminal meningoencephalitis and intracerebral "persister” trypanosomes.     Type of milk feeding in infancy and health behaviours in adult life: findings from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study

    A number of studies suggest that breast-feeding has beneficial effects on an individual's cardiovascular risk factors in adulthood, although the mechanisms involved are unknown. One possible explanation is that adults who were breastfed differ in their health behaviours. In a historical cohort, adult health behaviours were examined in relation to type of milk feeding in infancy. From 1931 to 1939, records were kept on all infants born in Hertfordshire, UK. Their type of milk feeding was summarised as breastfed only, breast and bottle-fed, or bottle-fed only. Information about adult health behaviours was collected from 3217 of these men and women when they were aged 59–73 years. Diet was assessed using an administered FFQ; the key dietary pattern was a ‘prudent’ pattern that described compliance with ‘healthy’ eating recommendations. Of the study population, 60 % of the men and women were breastfed, 31 % were breast and bottle-fed, and 9 % were bottle-fed. Type of milk feeding did not differ according to social class at birth, and was not related to social class attained in adult life. There were no differences in smoking status, alcohol intake or reported physical activity according to type of milk feeding, but there were differences in the participants' dietary patterns. In a multivariate model that included sex and infant weight gain, there were independent associations between type of feeding and prudent diet scores in adult life (P= 0·009), such that higher scores were associated with having been breastfed. These data support experimental findings which suggest that early dietary exposures can have lifelong influences on food choice

    Purchase, use and adaptation: interpreting ‘patented’ aids to the deaf in Victorian Britain

    Despite the enormous number and variety of hearing devices sold in the nineteenth century, and currently displayed in a variety of museums across the UK and the United States, there has hitherto been no commercially focused study of the business of selling and making them. While this might be because remaining company records are very sparse, another key issue is that such technologies, unlike artificial limbs, do not fall obviously in the domain of disability, nor medicine or communications. Hence they have until recently been under-represented in the historical studies of the Victorian period. We focus on the diverse lived experiences of hard-of-hearing people who did not necessarily identify as (partially) ‘deaf’ but who were nevertheless treated normatively by hearing contemporaries as if relatively deaf. By engaging with their experience of hearing aids to either pass as ‘hearing’ or at least be visibly ‘hard-of-hearing’, our study complements the recent work of Jaipreet Virdi-Dhesi on medical encounters with deaf subjects; of Jennifer Esmail on Deaf sign-language culture, and of Mara Mills on USA hearing technologies in the twentieth century
