Coupled thrust and vorticity dynamics during VRS

The focus is on the vortex ring state (VRS) observed at rapid descent rates. At VRS, the helical vortex filaments coming off the blades amalgamate around the rotor disk forming a vortex ring, which periodically detaches into the wake, causing extreme oscillations in thrust, with periods on the order of several tens of rotor revolutions. We discuss here the phase relation between the thrust cycle and vorticity distribution at the rotor disk. Maxima of the VRS thrust oscilla- tions correlate well with the maxima of circulation, enstrophy, and minima of enstrophy dispersion radius observed in the vicinity of the rotor disk

Multisource Bayesian sequential change detection

Suppose that local characteristics of several independent compound Poisson and Wiener processes change suddenly and simultaneously at some unobservable disorder time. The problem is to detect the disorder time as quickly as possible after it happens and minimize the rate of false alarms at the same time. These problems arise, for example, from managing product quality in manufacturing systems and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The promptness and accuracy of detection rules improve greatly if multiple independent information sources are available. Earlier work on sequential change detection in continuous time does not provide optimal rules for situations in which several marked count data and continuously changing signals are simultaneously observable. In this paper, optimal Bayesian sequential detection rules are developed for such problems when the marked count data is in the form of independent compound Poisson processes, and the continuously changing signals form a multi-dimensional Wiener process. An auxiliary optimal stopping problem for a jump-diffusion process is solved by transforming it first into a sequence of optimal stopping problems for a pure diffusion by means of a jump operator. Observations of the Vortex Ring State

This paper considers the vortex ring state, a flow condition usually associated with the descent of a rotor into its own wake. The phenomenon is investigated through experiments on simple rotor systems, and a comparison is then made with observations of a flow generated by a specially designed open core, annular jet that generates a mean flow velocity profile similar to the mean flow in a rotor wake in hover. Effects of L-Carnitine on Growth of Individually Cultured Cladoceran, Moina micrura

The cladoceran, Moina micrura, is a potential alternative live food for fish larvae. The effects of L-carnitine enrichment on first reproduction age, population density, and growth rate in M. micrura were determined. The cladocerans were enriched at 10 levels of L-carnitine (0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 500, 1000, and 1500 mg/l) dissolved in 30 ml Chlorella vulgaris culture medium for 17 days. The first reproduction age was stimulated by the supplemental L-carnitine. The population density was highest in the 1 mg/l treatment. The highest population growth rate was obtained in the 10 mg/l treatment, but it did not differ from the growth rate in the 0.1, 1, or 100 mg/l treatments. Consequently, the optimum L-carnitine concentration for M. micrura is 1 mg/l. Results suggest that L-carnitine can be a positive factor in enhancing the use of M. micrura as an alternative live food for fish larvae

Bladder injury during infected tola hip arthroplasty prosthesis removal: Report of a case and review of the literature

The bladder is the most frequently injured organ during pelvic surgery. However, during hip surgery, this complication is extremely rare. We report a case of bladder injury during total hip arthroplasty prosthesis removal surgery. A 65-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with left hip pain and wound infection. On plain radiograms, acetabular protrusion was identified. We decided to remove protruzed acetabular cup and place spacer. During the operation, unexpectedly bladder injury occurred. The rupture was sutured intraoperatively. Penile and scrotal strangulation caused by a steel ring: a case report

Application of constricting devices on the external male genitalia for increasing sexual performance is an unusual practice that can potentially lead to penile strangulation with severe consequences. In this case report we describe a case of a 48 year old male who presented in our hospital with a steel ring on his external genitalia which led to penile strangulation and a short review of the literature. The foreign body was successfully removed by an angle grinder which was not immediately available in the operating theatre. The patient had an uneventful recovery

Myeloperoxidase enzyme levels and oxidative stress in bipolar disorders

Oxidative stress and generalized inflammatory state are features of bipolar disorders (BD). The objective of this study was to compare the levels of products of inflammatory reaction and oxidative stress markers in patients with bipolar disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to determine the relationship between oxidative stress and inflammation in bipolar disorders. ADHD+BD (n = 30) and BD (n = 30) and healthy controls (n = 30) were enrolled. A clinical evaluation andmeasurements of malondialdehyde (MDA), high sensitive C reactive protein (hsCRP) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were performed. Patients with BD+ADHD comorbidity had significantly higher mean MPO levels than BD. Patients with BD had significantly higher mean hsCRP levels than healthy controls. However, there was no significant difference in mean serum hsCRP levels between patients with BD+ADHD and healthy controls. Patients with BD and BD+ADHD had significantly higher mean MDA levels than healthy controls. Our data showed that there is an increased susceptibility to oxidative stress which is strongly related to the serum levels of MDA produced in the serum. hsCRP levels were higher in BD patients than in BD+ADHD and this is suggestive of a higher degree of inflammatory activity in BD patients. ADHD+BD comorbidity seems to augment oxidative stress which is expressed as increased MPO level in the present study. Further large scale studies are needed to extend ourresults

Epicardial fat thickness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Background: Epidemiologic data indicates that rheumatoid arthritis is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Epicardial adipose tissue is a novel cardio-metabolic risk factor. Our aim was to evaluate epicardial fat thickness (EFT) using echocardiography in patients with rheumatoid arthritis compared to healthy control subjects. Secondly, we investigated relationship between epicardial fat thickness and clinical and echocardiographic parameters in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.Method: The study population included 76 consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis (64 female; mean age, 53 ±11 years, median disease duration, 7.8 years) and 50 healthy subjects as controls (39 female; mean age, 52 ± 6 years). All patients underwent echocardiography to assess left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, left ventricular hypertrophy and EFT. All values were compared between groups.Results: EFT was higher in rheumatoid arthritis patients than in healthy controls (0.66±0.20 vs. 0.54±0.18; p= 0.003). Thickness of Intra Ventricular Septum (IVS) (1.1±0.06 and 9.8±0.08; p=0.001) and posterior wall (PW) (0.98±0.05 and 0.93±0.08; p=0.015) was higher in patients with rheumatoid arthritis compared to healthy controls. Early diastolic myocardiac peak velocity or late diastolic mitral peak velocity (E/A) ratio was lower in rheumatoid arthritis patients compared to healthy patients (1.1 ±0.8 and 1.24±0.1 p=0.001) as well as, E/e’ was higher in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients than healthy patients. (E/e’:8.7±1.6 and 8.0±1.4 p=0.020). In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, EFT was positively correlated with hypertension and duration of disease and E/e’ (r: 0.10, p: 0.010, r: 0.306, p: 0.004 and r: 0.465 p: 0.007 respectively) and EFT was negatively correlated with E/A (r: -.262 p:0.022 )Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first report about epicardial adipose tissue in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
