Now instead of relying on core funding or catalytic support, the STREAM Initiative is self-funded through the services its network provides to academic, development and other organizations.     Telling stories, understanding lives, working toward change

    Stories are helping us learn more about the livelihoods of the fishers and farmers with whom we work in eastern India. We are engaged with these communities in processes and activities aimed at improving their lives and promoting changes in government policy and service delivery in aquaculture and fisheries. Stories are told in several languages by women and men who fish and farm, about their lives, their livelihoods and significant changes they have experienced. We also record stories as narrated to us by colleague-informants. The written and spoken word, photographs, drawings and films – all are used to document the stories of people’s lives, sometimes prompted by questions as simple as “What do people talk about in the village?” Through the power of language, stories can be an entry point into livelihoods programming, monitoring and evaluation, conflict transformation and ultimately a way of giving life to a rights-based approach to development.     Analysis of Spatial Structure of the SPica H II Region

    Far ultraviolet (FUV) spectral images of the Spica H II region are first presented here for the Si II* 1533.4A and Al II 1670.8A lines and then compared with the optical Halpha image. The H alpha and Si II* images show enhanced emissions in the southern part of the H II region where H I density increases outwards. This high density region, which we identify as part of the "interaction ring" of the Loop I superbubble and the Local Bubble, seems to bound the southern H II region. On the other hand, the observed profile of Al II shows a broad central peak, without much difference between the northern and southern parts, which we suspect results from multiple resonant scattering. The extended tails seen in the radial profiles of the FUV intensities suggest that the nebula may be embedded in a warm ionized gas. Simulation with a spectral synthesis code yields the values of the Lyman continuum luminosity and the effective temperature of the central star similar to previous estimates with 10^46.2 photons s^-1 and 26,000 K, respectively, but the density of the northern H II region, 0.22 cm^-3, is much smaller than previous estimates for the H alpha brightest region.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted for Ap

    Posteruptive phenomena in coronal mass ejections and substorms: Indicators of a universal process?

    [1] We examine phenomena associated with eruptions in the two different regimes of the solar corona and the terrestrial magnetosphere. We find striking similarities between the speeds of shrinking magnetic field lines in the corona and dipolarization fronts traversing the magnetosphere. We also examine the similarities between supra-arcade downflows observed during solar flares and bursty bulk flows seen in the magnetotail and find that these phenomena have remarkably similar speeds, velocity profiles, and size scales. Thus we show manifest similarities in the magnetic reconfiguration in response to the ejection of coronal mass ejections in the corona and the ejection of plasmoids in the magnetotail. The subsequent return of loops to a quasi-potential state in the corona and field dipolarization in the magnetotail are physical analogs and trigger similar phenomena such as downflows, which provides key insights into the underlying drivers of the plasma dynamics

    Subdiffusive axial transport of granular materials in a long drum mixer

    Full text link
    Granular mixtures rapidly segregate radially by size when tumbled in a partially filled horizontal drum. The smaller component moves toward the axis of rotation and forms a buried core, which then splits into axial bands. Models have generally assumed that the axial segregation is opposed by diffusion. Using narrow pulses of the smaller component as initial conditions, we have characterized axial transport in the core. We find that the axial advance of the segregated core is well described by a self-similar concentration profile whose width scales as tαt^\alpha, with α0.3<1/2\alpha \sim 0.3 < 1/2. Thus, the process is subdiffusive rather than diffusive as previously assumed. We find that α\alpha is nearly independent of the grain type and drum rotation rate within the smoothly streaming regime. We compare our results to two one-dimensional PDE models which contain self-similarity and subdiffusion; a linear fractional diffusion model and the nonlinear porous medium equation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table.
