Networking for Rural Development: a closer look at the evolution of communications in the STREAM Initiative
What began as a general desire to share messages about processes, technologies, lives and opportunities – among farming and fishing communities and those who work with them – has evolved into a network that shares meanings and lessons learnt. Now instead of relying on core funding or catalytic support, the STREAM Initiative is self-funded through the services its network provides to academic, development and other organizations. Spatial pair correlations of atoms in molecular dissociation
We perform first-principles quantum simulations of dissociation of trapped,
spatially inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates of molecular dimers.
Specifically, we study spatial pair correlations of atoms produced in
dissociation after time of flight. We find that the observable correlations may
significantly degrade in systems with spatial inhomogeneity compared to the
predictions of idealized uniform models. We show how binning of the signal can
enhance the detectable correlations and lead to the violation of the classical
Cauchy-Schwartz inequality and relative number squeezing.Comment: Final published versio
Telling stories, understanding lives, working toward change
Stories are helping us learn more about the livelihoods of the fishers and farmers with whom we work in eastern India. We are engaged with these communities in processes and activities aimed at improving their lives and promoting changes in government policy and service delivery in aquaculture and fisheries. Stories are told in several languages by women and men who fish and farm, about their lives, their livelihoods and significant changes they have experienced. We also record stories as narrated to us by colleague-informants. The written and spoken word, photographs, drawings and films – all are used to document the stories of people’s lives, sometimes prompted by questions as simple as “What do people talk about in the village?” Through the power of language, stories can be an entry point into livelihoods programming, monitoring and evaluation, conflict transformation and ultimately a way of giving life to a rights-based approach to development. Ultraviolet absorption by interstellar gas at large distances from the galactic plane
Eighteen high dispersion International Ultraviolet Exploration spectra of 6 stars in the large magellanic cloud (LMC) 3 stars in the small magellanic cloud (SMC) and 2 foreground stars were studied. Fourteen spectra cover the wavelengths lambda 1150-2000 A and 4 cover lambda 1900-3200 A. All the Magellanic Cloud star spectra exhibit exceedingly strong interstellar absorption lines due to a wide range of ionization stages at galactic velocities and at velocities associated with the LMC or SMC. The analysis is restricted to the Milky Way absorption features. Toward the LMC stars, the strong interstellar lines have a positive velocity extension, which exceeds the extension recorded toward the SMC stars. The most straightforward interpretation of these velocity extensions is obtained by assuming that gas at large distances away from the plane of the galaxy participates in the rotation of the galaxy as found in the galactic disk
First-principles quantum simulations of dissociation of molecular condensates: Atom correlations in momentum space
We investigate the quantum many-body dynamics of dissociation of a
Bose-Einstein condensate of molecular dimers into pairs of constituent bosonic
atoms and analyze the resulting atom-atom correlations. The quantum fields of
both the molecules and atoms are simulated from first principles in three
dimensions using the positive-P representation method. This allows us to
provide an exact treatment of the molecular field depletion and s-wave
scattering interactions between the particles, as well as to extend the
analysis to nonuniform systems. In the simplest uniform case, we find that the
major source of atom-atom decorrelation is atom-atom recombination which
produces molecules outside the initially occupied condensate mode. The unwanted
molecules are formed from dissociated atom pairs with non-opposite momenta. The
net effect of this process -- which becomes increasingly significant for
dissociation durations corresponding to more than about 40% conversion -- is to
reduce the atom-atom correlations. In addition, for nonuniform systems we find
that mode-mixing due to inhomogeneity can result in further degradation of the
correlation signal. We characterize the correlation strength via the degree of
squeezing of particle number-difference fluctuations in a certain
momentum-space volume and show that the correlation strength can be increased
if the signals are binned into larger counting volumes.Comment: Final published version, with updated references and minor

The mechanical design of a vapor compressor for a heat pump to be used in space
A heat pump developed for use in Spacelab as a stand-alone refrigeration unit as well as within a fluid loop system is discussed. It will provide an active thermal control for payloads. Specifications for the heat pump were established: (1) heat removal rates at the source; (2) heat source temperatures from room temperature; (3) heat-sink fluid temperatures at condenser inlet; and (4) minimum power consumption. A reversed Carnot cycle heat pump using Freon 12 as working fluid incorporating a one-cylinder reciprocating compressor was selected. The maximum crankshaft speed was fixed relatively high at 100 rpm. The specified cooling rates then made it necessary to select a cylinder volume of 10 cu cm, which was obtained with a bore of 40 mm and a stroke of 8 mm
Trends in social capital: Membership of associations in Great Britain, 1991–98
This Note uses the British Household Panel Study (BHPS) to consider the changing volume and distribution of voluntary association membership (and hence social capital) in Great Britain. We aim to supplement Hall's study of trends in social capital published in this Journal with more recent and longitudinal data. This allows us to show that whilst the volume of social capital is not declining, it is becoming increasingly class specific, and that its relative aggregate stability masks considerable turnover at the individual level. These findings are significant for current debates on social capital
Vibration signature analysis of multistage gear transmission
An analysis is presented for multistage multimesh gear transmission systems. The analysis predicts the overall system dynamics and the transmissibility to the gear box or the enclosed structure. The modal synthesis approach of the analysis treats the uncoupled lateral/torsional model characteristics of each stage or component independently. The vibration signature analysis evaluates the global dynamics coupling in the system. The method synthesizes the interaction of each modal component or stage with the nonlinear gear mesh dynamics and the modal support geometry characteristics. The analysis simulates transient and steady state vibration events to determine the resulting torque variations, speeds, changes, rotor imbalances, and support gear box motion excitations. A vibration signature analysis examines the overall dynamic characteristics of the system, and the individual model component responses. The gear box vibration analysis also examines the spectral characteristics of the support system
Echoes From Geneva: Finding John Calvin’s Socio-Economic Interests in the Modern World
Through an examination of John Calvin’s intentions in ending the prohibition on usury and the practical application of his teachings in sixteenth-century Geneva, and a consideration of the elements of poverty, social outcasts, and exploitation common to both Geneva and the modern world, it can be argued that the Reformer has much to offer of continued relevancy for those seeking to engage their contemporary world by finding alternatives that can help the financially disenfranchised. Calvin is often referred to as the “Father of Modern Interest,” and as such many people have directly blamed him for the exploitation associated with capitalism. This argument can be shown to be in direct opposition to the spirit of Calvin’s teachings. Common links between sixteenth-century Geneva and the modern world including the enduring presence of the poor, the refugee/migrant, and economically exploitative practices can be used to develop the idea of Calvin’s continued relevance. Because these elements persist, it is quite likely that Calvin still has something to contribute to the discussion of how to move towards a society in which solidarity is increased and each member of the global society is enfranchised. Through an examination of modern economic alternatives, it is possible to find traces of Calvin’s teachings and extrapolate where his interests might lie where he alive today. Because Calvin pursued the goal of making society a place of brotherhood and solidarity, striving to enfranchise all its members, regardless of their nationality or creed, his relevancy is lasting and important for those who today seek to find and use alternative approaches in order to better address the needs of modern society
