Introduction to the effect of the screening phenomenon of slip bands within grain microstructure

AbstractThe aim of the current contribution is to compute grain boundary (GB) stress fields and fracture using respectively finite elements (FE) methods and analytical model in the case of several slip bands (SB) impinging the GB. Indeed, local plasticity in thin bands is largely observed during straining of polycrystals. For instance, channels (or clear bands) within grains are observed after post-irradiation tensile loading [Cui et al, 2013]. Slip bands thickness is about 50 nm which is about hundred times higher than the classical pile-up thickness. The intersection of such slip bands (SBs) with grain boundaries (GBs) can trigger microcracks initiation. Then, it is important to propose a fracture criterion for predicting GB microcracks nucleation as SBs impinge GB. Despite of many issuesdevelop pile-up based models of GB stress fields, observations showthat morethan single slip band are observed in real situation.Then, the main carried out tool is the analysis of the screening effects of SB on parameters of early validated single SB model

Modelling of the scatter in short fatigue cracks growth kinetics in relation with the polycrystalline microstructure

International audienceFinite element computations of the stresses ahead of a tortuous microcrack in a polycrystal (including crack flanks friction) are coupled with simulations of crystallographic crack growth based on discrete dislocations dynamics. An incubation period for crack growth beyond grain boundaries is introduced. The model reproduces the shape of experimental crack growth curves obtained on 316LN stainless steel and the decrease in arrest periods at grain boundaries as the crack grows. It predicts a large scatter in growth rates related to the variety of local textures. Il faut attendre l'avènement de la communication télévisuelle pour voir l'Église sortir d'un relatif anonymat. Bravant leur méfiance, plusieurs évêques se prêtent au jeu médiatique, soucieux de confronter le discours de l'Église aux problèmes de leur temps. C'est le cas de Mgr Decourtray, qui dès les années 1970, accepte les demandes de la presse, avec l'envie de transmettre au plus grand nombre le message évangélique. Arrivé en 1981 à Lyon, il s'affirme en quelques années comme l'un des porte-parole médiatiques de l'Église. Conseillé par des attachés de presse successifs, il découvre tour à tour la satisfaction d'être écouté, la douleur d'être incompris, les vertus du silence et enfin la maturité médiatique. Par l'image de tolérance et d'ouverture qu'il a su s'attacher, le cardinal-archevêque de Lyon a suscité un courant de sympathie dont a profité l'Église toute entière.The " Advent " of television communication helped the members of the Church, who were relatively anonymous, to come into light. Mgr Decourtray settled in Lyon in 1981 and, within a few years, turned out to be one of the leading mediatic spokesman of the Church. Modélisation du comportement cyclique des polycristaux métalliques

Le modèle d'homogénéisation à champ moyen de Hill-Hutchinson est utilisé afin de prédire les courbes d'écrouissage cyclique des polycristaux à partir des lois cristallines. La taille de grain affectant peu le comportement cyclique des polycristaux, les paramètres de ces lois sont identifiés grâce aux courbes expérimentales de monocristaux. Différents métaux et alliages à structure cubique à face centrée sont étudiés sur la gamme de température 4K-873K. Les courbes macroscopiques prédites sont comparées aux résultats de calculs par éléments finis cristallins et aux courbes expérimentales

Identification of crystalline behavior on macroscopic response and local strain field analysis: application to alpha zirconium alloys

The purpose of this paper is to present an identification method of the crystalline behavior of a material from a mechanical test performed on a polycrystalline sample. Because of the lack of knowledge about its crystalline behavior, this method is applied to a Zirconium alloy. This identification is based on a finite element modeling of the microstructure, and the results are compared to both the macroscopic and the microscopic experimental results. On the microscopic scale, the plastic strains are obtained using a micro-extensometry technique and the crystalline orientation using an EBSD technique. In order to validate the method, an identification is performed with only two free parameters: the evolutions of the macroscopic and microscopic errors appear to be regular and exhibit a well-defined minimum so that the parameters can be clearly identified
