The significance of lifeworld and the case of hospice
Questions on what it means to live and die well are raised and discussed in the hospice movement. A phenomenological lifeworld perspective may help professionals to be aware of meaningful and important dimensions in the lives of persons close to death. Lifeworld is not an abstract philosophical term, but rather the opposite. Lifeworld is about everyday, common life in all its aspects. In the writings of Cicely Saunders, known as the founder of the modern hospice movement, facets of lifeworld are presented as important elements in caring for dying patients. Palliative care and palliative medicine today are, in many ways, replacing hospices. This represents not only a change in name, but also in the main focus. Hospice care was originally very much about providing support and comfort for, and interactions with the patients. Improved medical knowledge today means improved symptomatic palliation, but also time and resources spent in other ways than before. Observations from a Nordic hospice ward indicate that seriously ill and dying persons spend much time on their own. Different aspects of lifeworld and intersubjectivity in the dying personsâ room is presented and discussed
Insulation bonding test system
A method and a system for testing the bonding of foam insulation attached to metal is described. The system involves the use of an impacter which has a calibrated load cell mounted on a plunger and a hammer head mounted on the end of the plunger. When the impacter strikes the insulation at a point to be tested, the load cell measures the force of the impact and the precise time interval during which the hammer head is in contact with the insulation. This information is transmitted as an electrical signal to a load cell amplifier where the signal is conditioned and then transmitted to a fast Fourier transform (FFT) analyzer. The FFT analyzer produces energy spectral density curves which are displayed on a video screen. The termination frequency of the energy spectral density curve may be compared with a predetermined empirical scale to determine whether a igh quality bond, good bond, or debond is present at the point of impact
Discrete Formulation for the dynamics of rods deforming in space
We describe the main ingredients needed to create, from the smooth lagrangian
density, a variational principle for discrete motions of a discrete rod, with
corresponding conserved Noether currents. We describe all geometrical objects
in terms of elements on the linear Atiyah bundle, using a reduced forward
difference operator. We show how this introduces a discrete lagrangian density
that models the discrete dynamics of a discrete rod. The presented tools are
general enough to represent a discretization of any variational theory in
principal bundles, and its simplicity allows to perform an iterative
integration algorithm to compute the discrete rod evolution in time, starting
from any predefined configurations of all discrete rod elements at initial
times
Learning To Be Affected: Social suffering and total pain at lifeâs borders.
The practice of Live Sociology in situations of pain and suffering is the authorâs focus. An outline of the challenges of understanding pain is followed by a discussion of Bourdieuâs âsocial sufferingâ (1999) and the palliative care philosophy of âtotal painâ. Using examples from qualitative research on disadvantaged dying migrants in the UK, attention is given to the methods that are improvised by dying people and care practitioners in attempts to bridge intersubjective divides, where the causes and routes of pain can be ontologically and temporally indeterminate and/or withdrawn. The paper contends that these latter phenomena are the incitement for the inventive bridging and performative work of care and Live Sociological methods, both of which are concerned with opposing suffering. Drawing from the ontology of total pain, I highlight the importance of (i) an engagement with a range of materials out of which attempts at intersubjective bridging can be produced, and which exceed the social, the material, and the temporally linear; and (ii) an empirical sensibility that is hospitable to the inaccessible and non-relational
On the attributes of a critical literature review
Exploring and evaluating findings from previous research is an essential aspect of all research projects enabling the work to be set in the context of what is known and what is not known. This necessitates a critical review of the literature in which existing research is discussed and evaluated, thereby contextualising and justifying the project. In this research note we consider what is understood by being critical when reviewing prior to outlining the key attributes of a critical literature review. We conclude with a summary checklist to help ensure a literature review is critical
An Empirically Based Calculation of the Extragalactic Infrared Background
Using the excellent observed correlations among various infrared wavebands
with 12 and 60 micron luminosities, we calculate the 2-300 micron spectra of
galaxies as a function of luminosity. We then use 12 micron and 60 micron
galaxy luminosity functions derived from IRAS data, together with recent data
on the redshift evolution of galaxy emissivity, to derive a new, empirically
based IR background spectrum from stellar and dust emission in galaxies. Our
best estimate for the IR background is of order 2-3 nW/m^2/sr with a peak
around 200 microns reaching 6-8 nW/m^2/sr. Our empirically derived background
spectrum is fairly flat in the mid-IR, as opposed to spectra based on modeling
with discrete temperatures which exhibit a "valley" in the mid-IR. We also
derive a conservative lower limit to the IR background which is more than a

Non-standard connections in classical mechanics
In the jet-bundle description of first-order classical field theories there
are some elements, such as the lagrangian energy and the construction of the
hamiltonian formalism, which require the prior choice of a connection. Bearing
these facts in mind, we analyze the situation in the jet-bundle description of
time-dependent classical mechanics. So we prove that this connection-dependence
also occurs in this case, although it is usually hidden by the use of the
``natural'' connection given by the trivial bundle structure of the phase
spaces in consideration. However, we also prove that this dependence is
dynamically irrelevant, except where the dynamical variation of the energy is
concerned. In addition, the relationship between first integrals and

STIS ultraviolet/optical spectroscopy of `warm' ultraluminous infrared galaxies
(Abridged) We present high spatial resolution ultraviolet and optical
spectroscopy, obtained using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board
the Hubble Space Telescope, of nuclear structures within four `warm'
Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We find an AGN in at least three, and
probably all four of our sample, hosted in a compact, optically luminous
`knot'. In three cases these knots were previously identified as a putative AGN
nucleus from multiband optical imaging. Three of the sample also harbor a
starburst in one or more knots, suggesting that the optically luminous knots
seen in local ULIRGs are the most likely sites of the dust-shrouded starburst
and AGN activity that power the infrared emission. The four AGN have a diverse
range of properties; two are classical narrow line AGN, one shows both broad
and narrow lines and evidence for lines of sight from the narrow through to the
broad line regions, and one is plausibly a FeLoBAL AGN. The probable presence
in one object of an FeLoBAL AGN, which are extremely rare in the QSO
population, supports the idea that LoBAL AGN may be youthful systems shrouded
in gas and dust rather than AGN viewed along a certain line of sight. The three
starbursts for which detailed constraints are possible show a smaller range in
properties; all three bursts are young with two having ages of ~4Myr and the
third having an age of 20Myr, suggesting that ULIRGs undergo several bursts of
star formation during their lifetimes. None of the starbursts show evidence for
Initial Mass Function slopes steeper than about 3.3. The metallicities of the
knots for which metallicities can be derived are all at least 1.5 times the
Solar value. The properties of one further starburst knot are consistent with
it being the forming core of an elliptical galaxy.Comment: ApJ, accepte
