A 2D and 3D segmentation-based microstructure study on the role of brittle phases in diffusion brazed AISI 304L/NiCrSiFeMoB joints

    Get PDF
Nickel-based filler metals are frequently used in high temperature vacuum diffusion brazing for austenitic stainless-steel joints when components are subjected to high static or dynamic loads, corrosive environments and elevated temperatures. Due to melting point depressing metalloids such as silicon and boron, hard and brittle intermetallic phases are formed during the brazing process depending on the diffusion mechanisms. These brittle phases significantly affect mechanical and corrosive properties of the compounds. To quantify the influences of their amount, morphology and distribution, deep learning image segmentation was applied to segment these phases of the athermal solidification zone and the diffusion zone. Subsequently, characteristic microstructure parameters were calculated from these. The parameters of six different brazed joint variations were compared with their experimental characterization of mechanical and corrosive properties so that several correlations could be identified. Finally, a layer-by-layer removal of a brazed joint was performed using a focused ion beam, and a 3D model was reconstructed from the generated images to gain a mechanism-based understanding beyond the previous 2D investigations

Agriculture in the Face of Changing Markets, Institutions and Policies: Challenges and Strategies

    Get PDF
Since the late 1980s, agriculture in Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) has been under considerable adjustment pressure due to changing political, economic and institutional environments. These changes have been linked to the transition process, as well as the ongoing integration into the European Union and the world market. Reduced subsidies, increased environmental and food quality demands, as well as structural changes in the supply, processing and food retailing sector call for major structural adjustments and the improvement of farmersù managerial abilities. Though such changes always carry significant threats to farms, they also offer new opportunities for the farms' entrepreneurial engagement. Upcoming changes in the agricultural environment and their possible consequences for farm structures across Europe are thus still timely subjects. The objective of the IAMO Forum 2006 is to contribute to the success of agriculture in the CEECs, as well as their neighboring countries, in todayùs increasingly competitive environment. Concrete questions the conference focuses on are: What are the most suitable farm organizations, cooperative arrangements and contractual forms? How to improve efficiency and productivity? Where do market niches lie and what are the new product demands? This book contains 33 invited and selected contributions. These papers will be presented at the IAMO Forum 2006 in order to offer a platform for scientists, practitioners and policy-makers to discuss challenges and potential strategies at the farm, value chain, rural society and policy levels in order to cope with the upcoming challenges. IAMO Forum 2006, as well as this book, would not have been possible without the engagement of many people and institutions. We thank the authors of the submitted abstracts and papers, as well as the referees, for their evaluation of the abstracts from which the papers were selected. In particular, we would like to express our thanks to OLIVER JUNGKLAUS, GABRIELE MEWES, KLAUS REINSBERG and ANGELA SCHOLZ, who significantly contributed to the organization of the Forum. Furthermore, our thanks goes to SILKE SCHARF for her work on the layout and editing support of this book, and to JIM CURTISS, JAMIE BULLOCH, and DÃNALL Ã MEARÃIN for their English proof-reading. As experience from previous years documents, the course of the IAMO Forum continues to profit from the support and engagement of the IAMO administration, which we gratefully acknowledge. Last but not least, we are very grateful to the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Nutrition, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Haniel Foundation and the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) for their respective financial support.Agribusiness, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Farm Management, Industrial Organization, International Development, Labor and Human Capital, Land Economics/Use, Productivity Analysis,

CHEMampere : technologies for sustainable chemical production with renewable electricity and CO2, N2, O2, and H2O

The chemical industry must become carbon neutral by 2050, meaning that process‐, energy‐, and product‐related CO2 emissions from fossil sources are completely suppressed. This goal can only be reached by using renewable energy, secondary raw materials, or CO2 as a carbon source. The latter can be done indirectly through the bioeconomy or directly by utilizing CO2 from air or biogenic sources (integrated biorefinery). Until 2030, CO2 waste from fossil‐based processes can be utilized to curb fossil CO2 emissions and reach the turning point of global fossil CO2 emissions. A technology mix consisting of recycling technologies, white biotechnology, and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies is needed to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. In this context, CHEMampere contributes to the goal of carbon neutrality with electricity‐based CCU technologies producing green chemicals from CO2, N2, O2, and H2O in a decentralized manner. This is an alternative to the e‐Refinery concept, which needs huge capacities of water electrolysis for a centralized CO2 conversion with green hydrogen, whose demand is expected to rise dramatically due to the decarbonization of the energy sector, which would cause a conflict of use between chemistry and energy. Here, CHEMampere's core reactor technologies, that is, electrolyzers, plasma reactors, and ohmic resistance heating of catalysts, are described, and their technical maturity is evaluated for the CHEMampere platform chemicals NH3, NOx, O3, H2O2, H2, CO, and CxHyOz products such as formic acid or methanol. Downstream processing of these chemicals is also addressed by CHEMampere, but it is not discussed here.Bundesministerium fĂŒr Bildung und ForschungBundesministerium fĂŒr Wirtschaft und EnergieFonds Wetenschappelijk OnderzoekHorizon 2020 Framework ProgrammeMinisterium fĂŒr Umwelt, Klima und Energiewirtschaft Baden‐WĂŒrttember

The prognostic value of four interleukin-1 gene polymorphisms in caucasian women with breast cancer – a multicenter study

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1) is known to play an important role in the carcinogenesis of breast cancer. Although IL-1 gene polymorphisms were reported to be associated with increased risk of breast cancer, their influence on survival of Caucasian breast cancer patients remains to be shown.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied the influence of four common gene polymorphisms (<it>IL1A </it>-889C/T, <it>IL1B </it>-511C/T, <it>IL1B </it>+3953E1/E2, and <it>IL1RN </it>long/2) of the IL-1 family on survival in 262 Caucasian patients with breast cancer by univariate and multivariate survival analysis. The combined effect of the four gene polymorphisms on overall survival was studied by haplotype analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study 38 cases of cancer related death and a median time of follow-up (range) of 55.3 (0.4–175.8) months was observed. <it>IL1RN </it>2/2 (homozygous mutant) gene polymorphism was associated with shortened disease free and overall survival in a univariate (p = 0.001 and p = 0.01, respectively) and multivariate analysis (p = 0.002, Odds Ratio [95% Confidence Interval] = 3.6 [1.6–8.0] and p = 0.05, Odds Ratio = 3.0 [1.1–9.3], respectively). Presence of the homozygous mutant genotype of the <it>IL1A </it>-889 and <it>IL1B </it>+3953 gene polymorphism was associated with overall survival in the univariate (p = 0.004 and p = 0.002, respectively), but not in the multivariate analysis. No association was observed between all possible haplotype combinations and overall survival.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Carriage of the mutant alleles of <it>IL1RN </it>was independently associated with shortened disease free and overall survival rates in Caucasian patients with breast cancer.</p
