Paraoxonase 1 in Chronic Kidney Failure
In this review we summarize the findings from the literature and our own laboratory on the decreased PON1 activity in renal failure, the mechanisms proposed and the effect of interventions. In addition to profound alterations in lipoproteins, reduced serum PON1 activity has been clearly established in the past decade and could contribute to accelerated development of atherosclerosis in ESRD and in HD. PON1 lactonase activity is lower in ESRD patients. Hemodialysis partially restores PON1 lactonase and the other activities. PON1 activity recovery after dialysis suggests that uremic toxins may play a mechanistic role in PON1 inactivation. Lower PON1 activity in CRF patients is associated with low thiol concentration, high CRP, and is beneficially enhanced with vitamin C and flavonoids. Changes in HDL subclasses, namely lower HDL3 in these patients may also play a role in PON1 lower activity. Future research should focus on: (1) mechanistic studies on causes for low PON1 activity and mass; (2) prospective studies focusing on whether there is an added predictive value in measuring PON1 activity (and PON1 activity in HDL3) in this patient population; (3) intervention studies attempting to increase PON1 activity
Combined Spectral and Timing Analysis of the Black Hole Candidate MAXI J1659-152 Discovered by MAXI and Swift
We report on X-ray spectral and timing results of the new black hole
candidate (BHC) MAXI J1659-152 with the orbital period of 2.41 hours (shortest
among BHCs) in the 2010 outburst from 65 Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)
observations and 8 simultaneous Swift and RXTE observations. According to the
definitions of the spectral states in Remillard & McClintock (2006), most of
the observations have been classified into the intermediate state. All the
X-ray broadband spectra can be modeled by a multi-color disk plus a power-law
with an exponential cutoff or a multi-color disk plus a Comptonization
component. During the initial phase of the outburst, a high energy cutoff was
visible at 30-40 keV. The innermost radius of the disk gradually decreased by a
factor of more than 3 from the onset of the outburst and reached a constant
value of 35 d_10 cos i^-1/2 km, where d_10 is the distance in units of 10 kpc
and is the inclination. The type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO)
frequency varied from 1.6 Hz to 7.3 Hz in association with a change of the
innermost radius, while the innermost radius remained constant during the
type-B QPO detections at 1.6-4.1 Hz. Hence, we suggest that the origin of the
type-B QPOs is different from that of type-C QPOs, the latter of which would
originate from the disk truncation radius. Assuming the constant innermost
radius in the latter phase of the outburst as the innermost stable circular
orbit, the black hole mass in MAXI J1659-152 is estimated to be 3.6-8.0 M_solar
for a distance of 5.3-8.6 kpc and an inclination angle of 60-75 degrees.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
The hippocampus plays an important role in eyeblink conditioning with a short trace interval in glutamate receptor subunit delta 2 mutant mice.
Mutant mice lacking the glutamate receptor subunit delta2 exhibit changes in the structure and function of the cerebellar cortex. The most prominent functional feature is a deficiency in the long-term depression (LTD) at parallel fiber-Purkinje cell synapses. These mutant mice exhibit severe impairment during delay eyeblink conditioning but learn normally during trace eyeblink conditioning without the cerebellar LTD, even with a 0 trace interval. We investigated the hippocampal contribution to this cerebellar LTD-independent "0 trace interval" learning. The mutant mice whose dorsal hippocampi were aspirated exhibited severe impairment in learning, whereas those that received post-training hippocampal lesions retained the memory. The wild-type mice showed no impairment in either case. These results suggest that the hippocampal component of the eyeblink conditioning task becomes dominant when cerebellar LTD is impaired
Impact of Energetic Ion Driven Global Modes on Toroidal Plasma Confinements
Excitation of energetic-ion-driven Alfv6n eigenmodes (AEs) and their impact on energetic ion confinement are widely and intensively studied in helical devices such as CHS and LHD as well as major tokamaks. The excitation of AEs sensitively depends on the parameter space defined by the averaged beam beta and the velocity ratio V6nlV6 (V611 : injected beam ion velocity, Va: Alfv6n velocity). In LHD, these two relevant parameters are widely scanned without suffering from current disruptions. So far, toroidicity induced AE (TAE), global AE (GAE) and energetic particle mode (EPM) or resonant TAE (R-TAE) were identified during tangential neutral beam injection (NBI) in CHS and LHD. Moreover, a new coherent mode with the frequency by about 8 times higher than the TAE frequency was observed in NBI heated plasmas of LHD at low magnetic field (<0.6T). This mode may be induced by helical field components of the confinement field. Nonlinear phenomena of bursting amplitude modulation and fast frequency chirping are clearly seen for TAEs and EPMs in CHS and LHD. EPMs in CHS and bursting TAEs in LHD enhance radial transport of energetic ions in certain plasma conditions
