Spin-Orbit Torques in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo Alloys

The spin-orbit torque switching of ferrimagnetic Gdx_x(Fe90_{90}Co10_{10})100x_{100-x} films was studied for both transition metal (TM)-rich and rare earth (RE)-rich configurations. The spin-orbit torque driven magnetization switching follows the same handedness in TM-rich and RE-rich samples with respect to the total magnetization, but the handedness of the switching is reversed with respect to the TM magnetization. This indicates that the sign of the spin-orbit-torque-driven magnetic switching follows the total magnetization, although transport based techniques such as anomalous Hall effect are only sensitive to the transition metal magnetization. These results provide important insight into the physics of spin angular momentum transfer in materials with antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices

チンパンジーの瞬時心拍間隔を非接触で測定することに成功 --ミリ波レーダを用いた非接触バイタル測定技術の確立へ--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2023-10-18.This study proposes a method to determine the filter parameters required for the topology method, which is a radar-based noncontact method for measurement of heart inter-beat intervals. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by performing radar measurements involving both human participants and chimpanzee subjects. The proposed method is designed to enable setting of the filter cutoff frequency to eliminate respiratory components while maintaining the higher harmonics of the heartbeat components. Measurements using a millimeter-wave radar system and a reference contact -type electrocardiogram sensor demonstrate that the smallest errors that occur when measuring heart inter-beat intervals using the proposed method can be as small as 4.43 and 2.55 ms for humans and chimpanzees, respectively. These results indicate the possibility of using noncontact physiological measurements to monitor both humans and chimpanzees

Conformational Study of Polypeptide Chains Grafted on the Surface of Polylactide Latex Particle

Polylactide (PLA) latex particle covered with polypeptide chains were prepared by means of solvent exchange method from PLA and PLA-block-polypeptide block copolymer solutions. PLA segment of the block copolymer and PLA homopolymer formed a core of the particle, and the polypeptide segment of the block copolymer, which is designed as tightly fixed biodegradable emulsifier, formed corona around the particle surface. This picture was supported by the fact that zeta-potential of PLA latex particle covered with polypeptide segment was different from that of bare PLA particle because of the presence of the ionizable group in the polypeptide chains. To clarify the effect of the ionizable group on conformation of the polypeptide chain, the relation between the polypeptide chain length and the area occupied by the single block chain was evaluated. The result that the occupied area per a polypeptide chain was linearly increased with the increase in the polypeptide chain length indicates that the polypeptide chains trail on the particle surface and did not take helical structures

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite that was launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in 2006 carries a large solar-array paddle of 22 times 3 m in polar orbit. The wake side of the solar paddle can be charged to a negative value exceeding -1000 V. Numerical simulations and laboratory experiments are carried out to investigate charging and arcing phenomena on the backside of the solar paddle that has exposed bypass diode boards and silver-Teflon thermal film. Possibility of secondary arc and surge voltage between hot and return ends of power circuit has been investigated. The authors irradiate solar-panel coupons with an electron beam to simulate charging situation near the North Pole. Surface flashover is observed once the insulator potential exceeds -7000 V. The authors have also tested charging situation near the South Pole where carbon fiber-reinforced plastics surface facing dense ionospheric plasma may arc easily once a satellite potential drops to -80 or -90 V. The solar-paddle design has been modified to increase the safety margin against arcing, and tests have been carried out to identify the strength limit under extremely harsh test environment
