A comparative molecular approach to mesodermal patterning in basal deuterostomes: the expression pattern of Brachyury in the enteropneust hemichordate Ptychodera flava
This work concerns the formation of mesoderm in the development of an enteropneust hemichordate, Ptychodera flava, and the expression of the Brachyury gene during this process. Brachyury expression occurs in two distinct phases. In the embryo, Brachyury is transcribed during gastrulation in the future oral and anal regions of the gut, but transcripts are no longer detected by 2 weeks of development. Brachyury expression is not detected during the 5 months of larval planktonic existence. During this time, the adult coeloms begin to develop, originating as coalescences of cells that appear to delaminate from the wall of the gut. Brachyury expression cannot be detected again until metamorphosis, when transcripts appear in the mesoderm of the adult proboscis, collar and the very posterior region of the trunk. It is also expressed in the posterior end of the gut. At no time is Brachyury expressed in the stomochord, the putative homologue of the chordate notochord. These observations illuminate the process of maximal indirect development in Ptychodera and, by comparison with patterns of Brachyury expression in the indirect development of echinoderms, their sister group, they reveal the evolutionary history of Brachyury utilization in deuterostomes
A comparison and a combination of SST and AGM algorithms for counting points of elliptic curves in characteristic 2
International audienceSince the first use of a p-adic method for counting points of elliptic curves, by Satoh in 1999, several variants of his algorithm have been proposed. In the current state, the AGM algorithm, proposed by Mestre is thought to be the fastest in practice, and the algorithm by Satoh-Skjernaa-Taguchi has the best asymptotic complexity but requires precomputations. We present an amelioration of the SST algorithm, borrowing ideas from the AGM. We make a precise comparison between this modified SST algorithm and the AGM, thus demonstrating that the former is faster by a significant factor, even for small cryptographic sizes
Magnetic ground state of pyrochlore oxides close to metal-insulator boundary probed by muon spin rotation
Magnetism of ruthernium pyrochlore oxides A2Ru2O7 (A = Hg, Cd, Ca), whose
electronic properties within a localized ion picture are characterized by
non-degenerate t2g orbitals (Ru5+, 4d3) and thereby subject to geometrical
frustration, has been investigated by muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR)
technique. The A cation (mostly divalent) was varied to examine the effect of
covalency (Hg > Cd > Ca) on their electronic property. In a sample with A = Hg
that exhibits a clear metal-insulator (MI) transition below >> 100 K (which is
associated with a weak structural transition), a nearly commensurate magnetic
order is observed to develop in accordance with the MI transition. Meanwhile,
in the case of A = Cd where the MI transition is suppressed to the level of
small anomaly in the resistivity, the local field distribution probed by muon
indicates emergence of a certain magnetic inhomogeneity below {\guillemotright}
30 K. Moreover, in Ca2Ru2O7 that remains metallic, we find a highly
inhomogeneous local magnetism below >>25 K that comes from randomly oriented Ru
moments and thus described as a "frozen spin liquid" state. The systematic
trend of increasing randomness and itinerant character with decreasing
covalency suggests close relationship between these two characters. As a
reference for the effect of orbital degeneracy and associated Jahn-Teller
instability, we examine a tetravalent ruthernium pyrochlore, Tl2Ru2O7 (Ru4+,
4d4), where the result of muSR indicates a non-magnetic ground state that is
consistent with the formation of the Haldane chains suggested by neutron

Slow-roll Inflation with the Gauss-Bonnet and Chern-Simons Corrections
We study slow-roll inflation with the Gauss-Bonnet and Chern-Simons
corrections. We obtain general formulas for the observables: spectral indices,
tensor-to-scalar ratio and circular polarization of gravitational waves. The
Gauss-Bonnet term violates the consistency relation r = -8n_T. Particularly,
blue spectrum n_T > 0 and scale invariant spectrum |8n_T|/r << 1 of tensor
modes are possible. These cases require the Gauss-Bonnet coupling function of
\xi _{,\phi } \sim 10^8/M_{Pl}. We use examples to show new-inflation-type
potential with 10M_{Pl} symmetry breaking scale and potential with flat region
in \phi \gtrsim 10M_{Pl} lead to observationally consistent blue and scale
invariant spectra, respectively. Hence, these interesting cases can actually be
realized. The Chern-Simons term produce circularly polarized tensor modes. We
show an observation of these signals supports existence of the Chern-Simons
coupling function of \omega _{,\phi } \sim 10^8/M_{Pl}. Thus, with future
observations, we can fix or constrain the value of these coupling functions, at

Computing the Characteristic Polynomial of a Finite Rank Two Drinfeld Module
Motivated by finding analogues of elliptic curve point counting techniques,
we introduce one deterministic and two new Monte Carlo randomized algorithms to
compute the characteristic polynomial of a finite rank-two Drinfeld module. We
compare their asymptotic complexity to that of previous algorithms given by
Gekeler, Narayanan and Garai-Papikian and discuss their practical behavior. In
particular, we find that all three approaches represent either an improvement
in complexity or an expansion of the parameter space over which the algorithm
may be applied. Some experimental results are also presented
Instability of two-dimensional heterotic stringy black holes
We solve the eigenvalue problem of general relativity for the case of charged
black holes in two-dimensional heterotic string theory, derived by McGuigan et
al. For the case of , we find a physically acceptable
time-dependent growing mode; thus the black hole is unstable. The extremal case

String-Inspired Chern-Simons Modified Gravity In 4-Dimensions
Chern-Simons modified gravity models in 4-dimensions are shown to be special
cases of low energy effective string models to first order in the string

The Three-Dimensional Mass Distribution in NGC 1700
A variety of modeling techniques is used with surface photometry from the
literature and recently acquired high-accuracy stellar kinematic data to
constrain the three-dimensional mass distribution in the luminous cuspy
elliptical galaxy NGC 1700. First, we model the radial velocity field and
photometry, and, using a Bayesian technique, estimate the triaxiality T and
short-to-long axis ratio c in five concentric annuli between approximately 1
and 3 effective radii. The results are completely consistent with T being
constant inside about 2.5 r_e (36 arcsec; 6.7/h kpc). Adding an assumption of
constant T as prior information gives an upper limit of T < 0.16 (95%
confidence); this relaxes to T < 0.22 if it is also assumed that there is
perfect alignment between the angular momentum and the galaxy's intrinsic short
axis. Near axisymmetry permits us then to use axisymmetric models to constrain
the radial mass profile. Using the Jeans (moment) equations, we demonstrate
that 2-integral, constant-M/L models cannot fit the data; but a 2-integral
model in which the cumulative enclosed M/L increases by a factor of roughly 2
from the center out to 12/h kpc can. Three-integral models constructed by
quadratic programming show that, in fact, no constant-M/L model is consistent
with the kinematics. Anisotropic 3-integral models with variable M/L, while not
uniquely establishing a minimum acceptable halo mass, imply, as do the moment
models, a cumulative M/L_B approximately 10 h at 12/h kpc. We conclude that NGC
1700 represents the best stellar dynamical evidence to date for dark matter in
