Split transition in ferromagnetic superconductors
The split superconducting transition of up-spin and down-spin electrons on
the background of ferromagnetism is studied within the framework of a recent
model that describes the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity
induced by magnetic fluctuations. It is shown that one generically expects the
two transitions to be close to one another. This conclusion is discussed in
relation to experimental results on URhGe. It is also shown that the magnetic
Goldstone modes acquire an interesting structure in the superconducting phase,
which can be used as an experimental tool to probe the origin of the

CARD14 Gain-of-Function Mutation Alone Is Sufficient to Drive IL-23/IL-17-Mediated Psoriasiform Skin Inflammation In Vivo.
Rare autosomal dominant mutations in the gene encoding the keratinocyte signaling molecule CARD14, have been associated with an increased susceptibility to psoriasis, but the physiological impact of CARD14 gain-of-function mutations remains to be fully determined in vivo. Here, we report that heterozygous mice harboring a CARD14 gain-of-function mutation (Card14ΔE138) spontaneously develop a chronic psoriatic phenotype with characteristic scaling skin lesions, epidermal thickening, keratinocyte hyperproliferation, hyperkeratosis, and immune cell infiltration. Affected skin of these mice is characterized by elevated expression of anti-microbial peptides, chemokines, and cytokines (including T helper type 17 cell-signature cytokines) and an immune infiltrate rich in neutrophils, myeloid cells, and T cells, reminiscent of human psoriatic skin. Disease pathogenesis was driven by the IL-23/IL-17 axis, and neutralization of IL-23p19, the key cytokine in maintaining T helper type 17 cell polarization, significantly reduced skin lesions and the expression of antimicrobial peptides and proinflammatory cytokines. Therefore, hyperactivation of CARD14 alone is sufficient to orchestrate the complex immunopathogenesis that drives T helper type 17-mediated psoriasis skin disease in vivo
Magnetization and dimerization profiles of the cut two-leg spin ladder and spin-1 chain
The physical properties of the edge states of the cut two-leg spin ladder are
investigated by means of the bosonization approach. By carefully treating
boundary conditions, we derive the existence of spin-1/2 edge states in the
spin ladder with a ferromagnetic rung exchange and for the open spin-1
Heisenberg chain. In contrast, such states are absent in the antiferromagnetic
rung coupling case. The approach, based on a mapping onto decoupled
semi-infinite off-critical Ising models, allows us to compute several physical
quantities of interest. In particular, we determine the magnetization and
dimerization profiles of the cut two-leg spin ladder and of the open
biquadratic spin-1 chain in the vicinity of the SU(2) WZNW critical point.Comment: RevTeX 4, no figure, 26 page

Face recognition and retrieval in video
Abstract. Automatic face recognition has long been established as one of the most active research areas in computer vision. Face recognition in unconstrained environments remains challenging for most practical applications. In contrast to traditional still-image based approaches, recently the research focus has shifted towards videobased approaches. Video data provides rich and redundant information, which can be exploited to resolve the inherent ambiguities of image-based recognition like sensitivity to low resolution, pose variations and occlusion, leading to more accurate and robust recognition. Face recognition has also been considered in the content-based video retrieval setup, for example, character-based video search. In this chapter, we review existing research on face recognition and retrieval in video. The relevant techniques are comprehensively surveyed and discussed.
