Impact of a Booklet about Diabetes Genetic Susceptibility and Its Prevention on Attitudes towards Prevention and Perceived Behavioral Change in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Their Offspring

Background. Offspring of type 2 diabetic patients are at a high risk of type 2 diabetes. Information on diabetes genetic susceptibility and prevention should be supplied to the offspring. Methods. A six-page booklet on diabetes genetic susceptibility and prevention was distributed to 173 patients who ere ordered to hand it to their offspring. The patients answered a self-administered questionnaire on booklet delivery and attitudinal and behavioral changes toward diabetes and its prevention in themselves and their offspring. Results. Valid responses were obtained from 130 patients. Forty-nine patients had actually handed the booklet. Booklet induces more relief than anxiety. From the patient's view, favorable attitudinal and/or behavioral changes occurred in more than half of the offspring who were delivered the booklet. Conclusion. The booklet worked effectively on attitudes and behaviors toward diabetes and its prevention both in patients and their offspring. However, the effectiveness of patients as information deliverers was limited

Carrier filtering effect for enhanced thermopower in a body-centered tetragonal ruthenate

Charged carriers in solids diffuse from hot to cold sides under temperature gradient to induce the thermoelectric voltage. Carrier filtering effect, which only passes either electrons or holes for the conduction process, is an efficient method to enhance such voltage, although it is challenging to experimentally realize it especially in conventional metals with weak energy dependence of the density of states near the Fermi level. Here we measure the in-plane and out-of-plane thermopower of the layered perovskite Sr2_2RuO4_4 single crystals above room temperature, and find that the out-of-plane thermopower is largely enhanced with increasing temperature, while the in-plane one seems to remain a temperature-independent constant value which is expected from the Heikes formula. The observed large out-of-plane thermopower may originate from the recently proposed intriguing hole filtering effect in the body-centered tetragonal system, in which the carrier hopping through the centered atom is essential. Thus, the present carrier filtering effect may be a universal property to be applicable in various materials belonging to such crystal system.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Effect of enhanced expression of connexin 43 on sunitinib-induced cytotoxicity in mesothelioma cells

AbstractConnexin (Cx) makes up a type of intercellular channel called gap junction (GJ). GJ plays a regulatory role in cellular physiology. The Cx expression level is often decreased in cancer cells compared to that in healthy ones, and the restoration of its expression has been shown to exert antiproliferative effects. This work aims to evaluate the effect of the restoration of connexin 43 (Cx43) (the most ubiquitous Cx subtype) expression on sunitinib (SU)-induced cytotoxicity in malignant mesothelioma (MM) cells. Increased Cx43 expression in an MM cell line (H28) improved the ability of SU to inhibit receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling. Moreover, higher Cx43 expression promoted SU-induced apoptosis. The cell viability test revealed that Cx43 enhanced the cytotoxic effect of SU in a GJ-independent manner. The effect of Cx43 on a proapoptotic factor, Bax, was then investigated. The interaction between Cx43 and Bax was confirmed by immunoprecipitation. Furthermore, higher Cx43 expression increased the production of a cleaved (active) form of Bax during SU-induced apoptosis with no alteration in total Bax expression. These findings indicate that Cx43 most likely increases sensitivity to SU in H28 through direct interaction with Bax. In conclusion, we found that Cx43 overcame the chemoresistance of MM cells

Acute effects of difference in glucose intake on arterial stiffness in healthy subjects

Background: Post-prandial hyperglycemia is associated with higher cardiovascular risk, which causes arterial stiffening and impaired function. Although post-prandial increases in blood glucose are proportional to the level of intake, the acute effects of different glucose intakes on arterial stiffness have not been fully characterized. The present study aimed to determine the acute effects of differences in glucose intake on arterial stiffness. Methods: Six healthy middle-aged and elderly individuals (mean age, 60.0 ± 12.1 years) were orally administered 15, 20, and 25 g of glucose on separate days in a randomized, controlled, cross-over fashion. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, heart-brachial pulse wave velocity, cardio-ankle vascular index, brachial and ankle blood pressure, heart rate, and blood glucose and serum insulin concentrations before and 30, 60, and 90 min after glucose ingestion were measured. Results: Compared to baseline, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity was higher at 30, 60 and 90 min after ingestion of 25 g glucose, and higher at 90 min after ingestion of 20 g glucose, but at no time points after ingestion of 15 g. Cardio-ankle vascular index was higher at 60 min than at baseline after ingestion of 25 g glucose, but not after ingestion of 15 or 20 g. Conclusions: These results suggest that brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and cardio-ankle vascular index is affected by the quantity of glucose ingested. Proposed presently is that glucose intake should be reduced at each meal to avoid increases in brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and cardio-ankle vascular index during acute hyperglycemia

ペロブスカイトナノ粒子において近赤外光による大きな超高速光変調を室温で実現 --光通信帯における新たな超高速光スイッチング技術の開発に期待--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-05-24.Manipulation of excitons via coherent light-matter interaction is a promising approach for quantum state engineering and ultrafast optical modulation. Various excitation pathways in the excitonic multilevel systems provide controllability more efficient than that in the two-level system. However, these control schemes have been restricted to limited control-light wavelengths and cryogenic temperatures. Here, we report that lead halide perovskites can lift these restrictions owing to their multiband structure induced by strong spin-orbit coupling. Using CsPbBr₃ perovskite nanocrystals, we observe an anomalous enhancement of the exciton energy shift at room temperature with increasing control-light wavelength from the visible to near-infrared region. The enhancement occurs because the interconduction band transitions between spin-orbit split states have large dipole moments and induce a crossover from the two-level optical Stark effect to the three-level Autler-Townes effect. Our finding establishes a basis for efficient coherent optical manipulation of excitons utilizing energy states with large spin-orbit splitting
