Abstract This study reveals that research productivity of Immunology in India during the year 1993-2017 (25 years). The Web of Science (WoS) database was used in the data reclamation. The explore term used was “Immunology” and considered as a vital keyword of the topic discussed. Source and highly cited articles based on data obtained on Immunology beginning Web of Knowledge. It is found that the Country is India together contributed 397 articles during 1993-2017. The study mainly focused that year wise, Language wise publications, Document type publications, Authorship pattern, Subramaniam’s degree of collaboration and H- index score for highly productive authors, Source wise distributions, Keywords wise distributions, Applicability of Zipf’s law method, Page wise and Subject wise Publications was tested. This downloaded, transferred to Bibexcel, VoS viewer, and MS-Excel files for further scrutiny

University of Technology Sydney. Graduate School of Health.Evidence-based management of osteoarthritis (OA) has progressed over the past decades. However, there are still evidence gaps related to the management of osteoarthritis, particularly for surgical options for total knee replacement (TKR) and total hip replacement (THR) and the factors affecting the outcomes of these procedures. This thesis investigates the relationship of potential contributors affecting outcomes of surgical management in osteoarthritis patients. A prospective cohort study of 100 participants who underwent TKR and THR surgery was undertaken. Chapter 2 reports on the role of previous falls, falls risk, and psychological (pain catastrophizing, anxiety, depression) and functional factors such as Timed up and Go Test (TUG) and Choice Stepping Reaction Test (CSRT) associated with post-operative outcomes of length of hospital stay (LOS), need for inpatient rehabilitation, and need for community support services at discharge. We found that the presence of high level pre-operative pain catastrophizing and depression, and pre operative poorer function measured with TUG and CSRT, had positive associations with LOS. Pain catastrophizing and pre-operative falls were associated with an increased need for rehabilitation, and the CSRT with the need for community support services upon discharge. Chapter 3 reports the change in falls, falls risk, and psychological factors prior to surgery to 6-weeks post-surgery. Of 100 participants described in Chapter 2, 68 participants completed the 6-week follow-up for this study. This study found that WOMAC, PCS, HADS scores improved from pre-and post- surgery of a total joint replacement. We found no differences on fall risk. In summary, these studies showed that psychological factors, falls, and function are associated with post-operative outcomes of LOS, need for inpatient rehabilitation and services. The findings suggest the need for careful assessment and management of psychological factors, function, and falls in patients awaiting joint replacement surgery to improve pre- and post-operative outcomes. These findings empower clinicians and health managers to target relevant pre-operative factors and allocate resources appropriately leading to patient-centred care approach in patients undergoing TKR and THR procedures

Optical characterisation of Steatoda paykulliana spider dragline silk

    No full text
This project aims to characterise the optical properties of spider silk under the non-destructive light microscopy technique. Spider silk is of interest to the bioengineering and industrial communities because of its mechanical and biomedical properties, such as being extremely strong, flexible and light conductive. Polarised light microscopy is a contrast enhancing technique used to quantify the optical properties of the birefringent materials. Using this method, the composition and three-dimensional structure of the anisotropic crystals can be investigated. Since spider silk is an anisotropic material, the optical properties of the silk and in particular the birefringence of the spider silk was measured using this technique. Initially, a simple optical microscope was constructed using Thorlabs components in order to evaluate the birefringence of the Steatoda spider silk. Subsequently it was found that, the measurement of birefringence could not be calculated and the assembled system was not appropriate, as the silk indulged with different hydration conditions. Hence the optical properties of Steatoda spider silk under different environmental conditions were evaluated using the Olympus BX51 polarised light microscope. The research data acquired from the experiment were analysed using the statistical method. From the analysis, the proposed hypotheses were proved. such as significant difference in the value of birefringence within individual sample and between discrete silk samples. Also, substantial variance in thickness within individual silk sample and between distinct silk samples. Finally using data analysis, the value of birefringence under four different conditions were analysed and it indicated that the value of birefringence was varied to a great extent – it had a maximum value when the silk was in dry condition, the value decreased when the silk was in hydration; during dehydration the value increased again and in supercontraction, the value was drastically decreased. This is due to the fact that different environmental conditions affect the molecular assembly of the silk and this will possibly affect the properties of the silk

Corrosion inhibition efficiency of human black hair extract on mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 media

The use of human black hair (HBH) extract as corrosion inhibitors of mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 medium has been studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show the corrosion inhibition efficiency increased on increasing the concentration of the inhibitor. The extract is s a mixed type inhibitor with optimum concentration of 0.040% v/v in potentiodynamic polarization. The adsorption characteristics of the inhibitors have been determined from the results. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study confirm that the inhibition of corrosion of mild steel is through adsorption of the extract molecules on surface of metal
