Flavor and Charge Symmetry in the Parton Distributions of the Nucleon
Recent calculations of charge symmetry violation(CSV) in the valence quark
distributions of the nucleon have revealed that the dominant symmetry breaking
contribution comes from the mass associated with the spectator quark
system.Assuming that the change in the spectator mass can be treated
perturbatively, we derive a model independent expression for the shift in the
parton distributions of the nucleon. This result is used to derive a relation
between the charge and flavor asymmetric contributions to the valence quark
distributions in the proton, and to calculate CSV contributions to the nucleon
sea. The CSV contribution to the Gottfried sum rule is also estimated, and
found to be small
Charge symmetry violation in the parton distributions of the nucleon
We point out that charge symmetry violation in both the valence and sea quark
distributions of the nucleon has a non-perturbative source. We calculate this
non-perturbative charge symmetry violation using the meson cloud model, which
has earlier been successfully applied to both the study of SU(2) flavour
asymmetry in the nucleon sea and quark-antiquark asymmetry in the nucleon. We
find that the charge symmetry violation in the valence quark distribution is
well below 1%, which is consistent with most low energy tests but significantly
smaller than the quark model prediction about 5%-10%. Our prediction for the
charge symmetry violation in the sea quark distribution is also much smaller

Electroweak Baryogenesis and Standard Model CP Violation
We analyze the mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis proposed by Farrar and
Shaposhnikov in which the phase of the CKM mixing matrix is the only source of
violation. This mechanism is based on a phase separation of baryons via
the scattering of quasiparticles by the wall of an expanding bubble produced at
the electroweak phase transition. In agreement with the recent work of Gavela,
Hern\'andez, Orloff and P\`ene, we conclude that QCD damping effects reduce the
asymmetry produced to a negligible amount. We interpret the damping as quantum
decoherence. We compute the asymmetry analytically. Our analysis reflects the
observation that only a thin, outer layer of the bubble contributes to the
coherent scattering of the quasiparticles. The generality of our arguments
rules out any mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis that does not make use of a

Shadowing in neutrino deep inelastic scattering and the determination of the strange quark distribution
We discuss shadowing corrections to the structure function in neutrino
deep-inelastic scattering on heavy nuclear targets. In particular, we examine
the role played by shadowing in the comparison of the structure functions
measured in neutrino and muon deep inelastic scattering. The importance of
shadowing corrections in the determination of the strange quark distributions

The Potential for Neutrino Physics at Muon Colliders and Dedicated High Current Muon Storage Rings
Conceptual design studies are underway for muon colliders and other
high-current muon storage rings that have the potential to become the first
true ``neutrino factories''. Muon decays in long straight sections of the
storage rings would produce precisely characterized beams of electron and muon
type neutrinos of unprecedented intensity. This article reviews the prospects
for these facilities to greatly extend our capabilities for neutrino

Computer tomographic investigation of subcutaneous adipose tissue as an indicator of body composition
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Modern computer tomography (CT) equipment can be used to acquire whole-body data from large animals such as pigs in minutes or less. In some circumstances, computer assisted analysis of the resulting image data can identify and measure anatomical features. The thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue at a specific site measured by ultrasound, is used in the pig industry to assess adiposity and inform management decisions that have an impact on reproduction, food conversion performance and sow longevity. The measurement site, called "P2", is used throughout the industry. We propose that CT can be used to measure subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness and identify novel measurement sites that can be used as predictors of general adiposity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Growing pigs (<it>N </it>= 12), were each CT scanned on three occasions. From these data the total volume of adipose tissue was determined and expressed as a proportion of total volume (fat-index). A computer algorithm was used to determined 10,201 subcutaneous adipose thickness measurements in each pig for each scan. From these data, sites were selected where correlation with fat-index was optimal.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Image analysis correctly identified the limits of the relevant tissues and automated measurements were successfully generated. Two sites on the animal were identified where there was optimal correlation with fat-index. The first of these was located 4 intercostal spaces cranial to the caudal extremity of the last rib, the other, a further 5 intercostal spaces cranially.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The approach to image analysis reported permits the creation of various maps showing adipose thickness or correlation of thickness with other variables by location on the surface of the pig. The method identified novel adipose thickness measurement positions that are superior (as predictors of adiposity) to the site which is in current use. A similar approach could be used in other situations to quantify potential links between subcutaneous adiposity and disease or production traits.</p
Changes in the relative thickness of individual subcutaneous adipose tissue layers in growing pigs
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer is an important parameter at all stages of pig production. It is used to inform decisions on dietary requirements to optimize growth, in gilts to promote longevity and finally to assist in the calculation of payments to producers that allow for general adiposity. Currently for reasons of tradition and ease, total adipose thickness measurements are made at one or multiple sites although it has been long recognized that up to three well defined layers (outer (L1), middle (L2), and inner (L3)) may be present to make up the total. Various features and properties of these layers have been described. This paper examines the contribution of each layer to total adipose thickness at three time points and describes the change in thickness of each layer per unit change in body weight in normal growing pigs.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A group of nine pigs was examined using 14 MHz linear array transducer on three separate occasions. The average weight was 51, 94 and 124 kg for each successive scan. The time between scanning was approximately 4 weeks. The proportion of each layer to total thickness was modeled statistically with scan session as a variable and the change in absolute thickness of each layer per unit change in body weight was modeled in a random regression model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There was a significant change in ratios between scans for the middle and inner layers (<it>P </it>< 0.001). The significant changes were seen between the first and second, and between the first and final, scan sessions. The change in thickness per unit change in body weight was greatest for L2, followed by L1 and L3.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results demonstrate that subcutaneous adipose layers grow at different rates relative to each other and to change in body weight and indicate that ultrasound can be used to track these differences.</p
Voices from an edge. Unsettling the practices of youth voice and participation: arts-based practice in The Blue Room, Manchester
The strengths and limitations of approaches to participatory and democratic practice rooted in voice have been discussed in relation to education and also âyouth voiceâ. The paper seeks to make critical connection between the two debates, especially in relation to the persistence of practices of exclusion and marginalisation. Drawing on a two-year participant observation of a creativity-based project in Manchester, UK â The Blue Room â which worked with young men in the city centre who may have been engaged in selling sex, the article asks what it might mean for them to have voice. The widely discussed limitations of neo-liberal accounts of voice and choice are evident in this case, for the extent to which such a way of life can be thought to be freely chosen is a matter of intense debate. The possibility explored in this article is that arts-based strategies of pedagogic engagement might offer (to this group of young people and others) a hopeful (because complex, provisional and in process) form of voice rather than a tokenistic and controlling one
Probing Charge-Symmetry-Violating Quark Distributions in Semi-Inclusive Leptoproduction of Hadrons
Recent experiments by the HERMES group at HERA are measuring semi-inclusive
electroproduction of pions from deuterium. We point out that by comparing the
production of and from an isoscalar target, it is possible, in
principle, to measure charge symmetry violation in the valence quark
distributions of the nucleons. It is also possible in the same experiments to
obtain an independent measurement of the quark fragmentation functions. We
review the information which can be deduced from such experiments and show the
``signature'' for charge symmetry violation in such experiments. Finally, we
predict the magnitude of the charge symmetry violation, from both the valence
quark distributions and the pion fragmentation function, which might be
