Cerebral Vein Thrombosis Misdiagnosed and Mismanaged
Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all unexplained CNS disorders of sudden onset. Etiological factors are often subclinical forms of several common thrombophilic states occurring together, rather than the typical inherited and rare causes. Diagnosis is missed because of the heterogeneity in clinical presentation and etiological factors. In several patients with the so called idiopathic CVT nutritional deficiencies and lifestyle issues are more important factors in pathogenesis, rather than single rarer causes. High index of suspicion is the key to diagnosis. Clinical skill has to be fine tuned to diagnose the problem and to identify all the etiological factors. Radiology is essential for diagnosis but relying on radiology alone will lead to missing several cases and even erroneous diagnosis. It is inappropriate to proceed prematurely to laboratory investigations, forgetting proper clinical evaluation by studying diet, lifestyle, and environment of the patients. Success in managing lies in identifying all the contributory causes and correcting all of them giving excellent outcome almost always. Clinical observations based on case series and sharing of such information alone are the means to arrive at a consensus in diagnosis and management
Lagocephalus inermis catch at Kollam - a new source of income to fishermen
The pufferfish, Lagocephalus inermis, which was considered as a menace by the fishermen has now become a source of income for them. The fish cut through the gears during hauling and consume the catch, especially cephalopods. However, of late this fish is found edible by certain people and hence it is caught and brought by the trawlers operating off Neendakara and Sakthikulangara

Bulk viscous matter and recent acceleration of the Universe
We consider a cosmological model dominated by bulk viscous matter with total
bulk viscosity coefficient proportional to the velocity and acceleration of the
expansion of the universe in such a way that
We show that there exist two limiting conditions in the bulk viscous
coefficients, (, , ) which corresponds to a
universe having a Big-Bang at the origin, followed by an early decelerated
epoch and then making a smooth transition into an accelerating epoch. We have
constrained the model using the type Ia Supernovae data, evaluated the best
estimated values of all the bulk viscous parameters and the Hubble parameter
corresponding to the two limiting conditions. We found that even though the
evolution of the cosmological parameters are in general different for the two
limiting cases, they show identical behavior for the best estimated values of
the parameters from both the limiting conditions. A recent acceleration would
occur if for the first limiting
conditions and if for the second
limiting conditions. The age of the universe predicted by this model is found
to be less than that predicted from the oldest galactic globular clusters. The
total bulk viscosity seems to be negative in the past and becomes positive when
. So the model violates the local second law of thermodynamics.
However, the model satisfies the generalized second law of thermodynamics at
the apparent horizon throughout the evolution of the universe. We also made a
statefinder analysis of the model and found that it is distinguishably
different from the standard CDM model at present, but shows a de
Sitter type behavior in the far future of the evolution.Comment: 14 figure
Unusal landings of Xancus pyrum in trawlers at Sakthikulangara, Kollam
A unique catch of Xanus pyrum was observed on 13.06.2008 at Sakthikulangara during morning landings. The catch of X. pyrum was exceptionally high ranging from 15 to 150 kg per unit
Breeding, larval rearing and seed production of maroon clown Premnas biaculeatus under captive conditions
The maroon clown Premnas biaculeatus is the sole member in the genus Premnas. P. biaculeatus is commonly known as 'Spine-Cheek Anemone fish' because of the presence of a pair of long spines on its pre-operculum. In India, this species is abundant in the coral reef ecosystem of Andaman and Nicobar Islands situated in Bay of Bengal. Their most striking bright red to maroon colouration on entire body and fin, demarcated abruptly with white to golden yellow narrow bands make them as one of the most attractive species among the marine ornamental clown fishes. Most of the salt water ornamental fishes are collected from the wild and hence there is a serious concern in respect of their conservation. Recent studies also showed that wild collected specimens have a dismal survival history in captivity, whereas captivebred clownfish are generally hardier, more disease free, easily adjust to life in aquaria and retain normal colouration. Due to the very high demand of the species in the aquarium fish trade, development of an appropriate technology for its captive production is felt as an alternative means of providing fish for the trade rather than wild collection which may cause depletion of the stocks. In this juncture, a viable technique has been developed in the marine hatchery of CMFRI, Kochi for the captive breeding and juvenile production of P. biaculeatus for the first time in India
