    Bioprocessing Data for the Production of Marine Enzymes

    This review is a synopsis of different bioprocess engineering approaches adopted for the production of marine enzymes. Three major modes of operation: batch, fed-batch and continuous have been used for production of enzymes (such as protease, chitinase, agarase, peroxidase) mainly from marine bacteria and fungi on a laboratory bioreactor and pilot plant scales. Submerged, immobilized and solid-state processes in batch mode were widely employed. The fed-batch process was also applied in several bioprocesses. Continuous processes with suspended cells as well as with immobilized cells have been used. Investigations in shake flasks were conducted with the prospect of large-scale processing in reactors

    Where do free-ranging dogs rest? A population level study reveals hidden patterns in resting site choice

    Free-ranging dogs (FRDs) in human-dominated areas encounter obstacles such as noise, pollution, limited food sources, and anthropogenic disturbance while resting. Since FRDs have survived as a population in India, as in many other parts of the Global South for centuries, they provide a unique opportunity to study adaptation of animals to the human-dominated urban landscape. We documented factors impacting resting behaviour and site preferences in three states of India, for 284 dogs, leading to 6047 observations over 3 years. 7 physical parameters of the resting sites, along with the biological factors like mating and pup-rearing and time of day affected their choice of resting sites. The frequency-rank distribution of the unique combinations in which the parameters were selected followed a Power law distribution, which suggests underlying biological reasons for the observed preferences. Further, 3 of these parameters showed maximum consistency of choice in terms of the sub-parameters selected, explaining 30% of the observations. FRDs prefer to rest close to their resource sites within the territory, at a place that enabled maximum visibility of the surroundings. They chose such sites in the core of the territory for sleeping. At other times, they chose such sites away from the core, and were less restive, thus allowing for immediate response in case of intrusion or threat. They generally avoided anthropogenic disturbance for sleeping, and preferred areas with shade.Incorporating these aspects into urban management plans can promote human-dog cooperation and reduce situations of conflict. We envisage more inclusive urban areas in the future, that can allow for co-existence of the humans and their oldest companions in the commensal relationship that has been maintained for hundreds of generations of dogs in this part of the world.Comment: 2 figures, 2 tables, ES

    Physique and Fitness of Swimmers from West Bengal

    The purpose of the present study is to assess the physique and fitness status of young school and college age swimmers from West Bengal. This cross sectional study was carried out on 46 male and 9 female swimmers of 9-20 years of age. The study parameters include body height, body weight, BMI, different anthropometric parameters, skinfold thickness and aerobic power, strength, flexibility, blood pressure and pulmonary function. Besides, history of training was taken by questionnaire. In the present study male and female adolescent swimmers have significantly higher body fat than their non-swimmer counterparts. Besides, respiratory capacity, max. oxygen consumption and flexibility parameters are significantly higher in male and female swimmers than in control group boys and girls. Besides, highly significant correlation has been found between sitting height, arm span and hand span of swimmer with swimming speed, years of training(swimming) and percentage of body fat. Again, pulmonary function, strength and max. oxygen consumption parameters are significantly correlated with years of training and speed of training. Therefore, simple regression equations are constructed to predict strength, respiratory and cardio-vascular parameters of adolescent swimmers on the basis of years of swimming and speed of swimming. When different style of swimming is considered it has been observed that highest Vo2 max value has been found in free style and butterfly swimmers followed by breast stroke and then back stroke swimmers. Swimmers of the present study when compared to international standard, they are shorter and lower in body fat content values and some physiological parameters like Vo2 max, flexibility and hand grip strength than international standard values. From this study it can be concluded that as there is no available information regarding strength, cardiovascular and respiratory status of adolescent girls and boys swimmers of West Bengal, this study can be said to be a pilot study on the basis of which further elaborate investigation requires to be initiated. Thus these baseline information of physique and physiological parameters of adolescent swimmers will provide local database for coaches and sports physiologists to develop proper training schedule and for identification of talent in the early ages

    Specific glial populations regulate hippocampal morphogenesis

    The hippocampus plays an integral role in spatial navigation, learning and memory, and is a major site for adult neurogenesis. Critical to these functions is the proper organization of the hippocampus during development. Radial glia are known to regulate hippocampal formation, but their precise function in this process is yet to be defined. We find that in Nuclear Factor I b (Nfib)-deficient mice, a subpopulation of glia from the ammonic neuroepithelium of the hippocampus fail to develop. This results in severe morphological defects, including a failure of the hippocampal fissure, and subsequently the dentate gyrus, to form. As in wild-type mice, immature nestin-positive glia, which encompass all types of radial glia, populate the hippocampus in Nfib-deficient mice at embryonic day 15. However, these fail to mature into GLAST- and GFAP-positive glia, and the supragranular glial bundle is absent. In contrast, the fimbrial glial bundle forms, but alone is insufficient for proper hippocampal morphogenesis. Dentate granule neurons are present in the mutant hippocampus but their migration is aberrant, likely resulting from the lack of the complete radial glial scaffold usually provided by both glial bundles. These data demonstrate a role for Nfib in hippocampal fissure and dentate gyrus formation, and that distinct glial bundles are critical for correct hippocampal morphogenesis

    Automated credit assessment framework using ETL process and machine learning

    In the current business scenario, real-time analysis of enterprise data through Business Intelligence (BI) is crucial for supporting operational activities and taking any strategic decision. The automated ETL (extraction, transformation, and load) process ensures data ingestion into the data warehouse in near real-time, and insights are generated through the BI process based on real-time data. In this paper, we have concentrated on automated credit risk assessment in the financial domain based on the machine learning approach. The machine learning-based classification techniques can furnish a self-regulating process to categorize data. Establishing an automated credit decision-making system helps the lending institution to manage the risks, increase operational efficiency and comply with regulators. In this paper, an empirical approach is taken for credit risk assessment using logistic regression and neural network classification method in compliance with Basel II standards. Here, Basel II standards are adopted to calculate the expected loss. The required data integration for building machine learning models is done through an automated ETL process. We have concluded this research work by evaluating this new methodology for credit risk assessment

    NFIA controls telencephalic progenitor cell differentiation through repression of the Notch effector Hes1

    The balance between self-renewal and differentiation of neural progenitor cells is an absolute requirement for the correct formation of the nervous system. Much is known about both the pathways involved in progenitor cell self-renewal, such as Notch signaling, and the expression of genes that initiate progenitor differentiation. However, whether these fundamental processes are mechanistically linked, and specifically how repression of progenitor self-renewal pathways occurs, is poorly understood. Nuclear factor I A (Nfia), a gene known to regulate spinal cord and neocortical development, has recently been implicated as acting downstream of Notch to initiate the expression of astrocyte-specific genes within the cortex. Here we demonstrate that, in addition to activating the expression of astrocyte-specific genes, Nfia also downregulates the activity of the Notch signaling pathway via repression of the key Notch effector Hes1. These data provide a significant conceptual advance in our understanding of neural progenitor differentiation, revealing that a single transcription factor can control both the activation of differentiation genes and the repression of the self-renewal genes, thereby acting as a pivotal regulator of the balance between progenitor and differentiated cell states
