Corp(Se)ocracy: Marketing Death in Margaret Atwood\u27s Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood

    Get PDF
Margaret Atwood\u27s novels of speculative fiction Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood articulate a currently possible future world of corporate control marked by profitable practices of death. Narrated by both individuals of privilege and also of the underclass, the novels reveal insidious systems of self-perpetuating diseases and cosmetic enhancements that ultimately bankrupt or kill the consumers. As the state is policed by CorpSECorps, the corporate security forces, individuals have very little protection or recourse, and groups such as God\u27s Gardeners, conservationists who resist consuming the corporate products, are in danger of annihilation. Yet when humanity is destroyed by a bioengineered virus, it is those who have shunned the corporate materialism who are able to avoid death

Conceptual Understanding of Fractions and Decimals for Fourth Grade Students

    Get PDF
A study was conducted in two 4th grade classrooms based on current research of foundational concepts of fraction and decimal knowledge, socio-cultural learning theory, cognition and international mathematics education. The goal of this study was for students to acquire conceptual and procedural knowledge of fraction and decimal concepts. When students have multiple experiences delving into rigorous tasks with fractions and decimals, researchers (Lamon, 2006; Siegler & Alibali 2005) suggest students will show an increase in understanding. Cognition and developmental stages were examined and incorporated within the suggested tasks of the instructional unit. With assistance from current research, this study demonstrated students showed significant gains from pre to post assessment. This study provided information that determined students acquired a stronger foundation and a deeper understanding of decimals and fractions, preparing them for middle and high school mathematics

Five Key Ideas to Teach Fractions and Decimals with Understanding

The teaching of fractions and decimals is a significant challenge for many teachers due to the inherent difficulty of the topic for students as well as the lack of high-quality, modernized curricular materials. This article examines the key ideas of teaching fractions and decimals for understanding that are evident in the current research literature and the curricular materials and teaching strategies from high-achieving nations

The role of the school nurse in protecting children and young people from maltreatment: An integrative review of the literature

    Get PDF
Objectives. This review aims to describe the role of the school nurse in protecting children and young people from maltreatment by examining the international literature. Child maltreatment is a prevalent issue in global society today and includes physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect and exploitation. School nurses are ideally placed to identify and work with children and young people who are at risk of maltreatment through their regular contact with the school community. Design. Integrative literature review incorporating thematic analysis. Data Sources. Electronic databases British Nursing Database, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Medline, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library Database for Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Search Terms: Role, School Nurse, Child Maltreatment. Review Methods. Initial title and abstract review of 444 studies resulted in 78 studies for full text review. Additional search strategies identified one relevant study. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were employed as follows; (1) study published in the English language, (2) peer-reviewed, (3) primary research, (4) inclusion of school nurses (or equivalent role internationally) in the study sample, and (5) a focus on the role of school nurses in preventing child maltreatment. Studies were appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool for qualitative studies and the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist for mixed-methods and quantitative studies. Findings from the studies were identified, summarised and organised into a summary table, before being analysed thematically. Results. 21 studies met inclusion and quality criteria and were included in the review. Key themes that emerged from the analysis were; supporting the child and family, detective work, working with other professionals, training and supervision, barriers to protecting children and young people from maltreatment and trust. Conclusion. International literature highlights the variety of activities that school nurses may undertake in daily practice to protect children and young people from maltreatment. Several challenges to this role are identified, including time management and building relationships with children and young people. Recommendations for practice and further research are made

The title compound, [Pb(C6F5S)2(C5H5N)2]n, shows the PbII atom in a ψ-trigonal bipyramidal S2N2 bonding environment. Pyridine N atoms occupy axial sites, while thiolate S atoms and a stereochemically active lone pair occupy equatorial sites. Very long intermolecular Pb⋯S interactions [3.618 (4) and 3.614 (4) Å] yield a weakly associated one-dimensional polymeric structure extending parallel to [010]

Exploring the challenges of using electronic health record systems in nursing research

    Get PDF
Background. Electronic health records (EHRs) provide an interesting potential data set for nursing research. However, they can present challenges when collecting data, as EHR systems are not designed with research in mind. Aim. To present an example of collecting data using EHRs that was conducted as part of a study of the role of the school nurse in safeguarding children. Discussion. Data were successfully obtained from EHR systems to understand school nursing caseloads and interventions with vulnerable children and young people. Major limitations included variances in EHR systems, such as different nomenclature for interventions. These limitations were addressed by reviewing organisational guidance on record-keeping and through a working knowledge of the different EHR systems. Conclusion. Conducting research using EHRs has provided important learning about the potential of this type of data and the promise they hold for future research. Implications. for practice Organisations willing for existing data to be used in research might consider embedding pathways for collecting data that are easy for potential researchers to navigate. EHR systems need to be sensitive to research, but not at the expense of efficiency in clinical practice
