The purpose of this study was to verify the relaxing effect of tactile care of the elderly with dementia. Comparison of physiological indices and psychological indices before and after the treatment, decrease in pulse rate, decrease in systolic blood pressure value, the rise of the percutaneous arterial oxygen saturation, the rise of the relaxation degree, the physical reaction [comfortable] [warm] [relaxing] [got sleepy], the psychological reaction [became calmer] [increased aggressiveness] admitted. Therefore, the possibility of the relaxation effect by the parasympathetic function, the sleep effect, and the emotional stability were suggested by tactile care to the elderly person of the dementia. In addition, it is possible that the interaction between the care worker and the target person is happening

Larval pufferfish protected by maternal tetrodotoxin

Marine pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin (TTX), an extremely potent neurotoxin. All species of the genus Takifugu accumulate TTX in the liver and ovaries, although the tissue(s) in which it is localized can differ among species. TTX is the major defense strategy the pufferfish appears to use against predators. TTX is also used as a male-attracting pheromone during spawning. Here we demonstrate an additional (and unexpected) use of maternal TTX in the early larval stages of the Takifugu pufferfish. Predation experiments demonstrated that juveniles of all the species of fish used as predators ingested pufferfish larvae, but spat them out promptly. Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MSMS) analysis revealed that the pufferfish larvae contain a small quantity of TTX, which is not enough to be lethal to the predators. Immunohistochemical analysis with anti-TTX monoclonal antibody revealed that the TTX is primarily localized in the body surface of the larvae as a layer of protection. Our study showed the female parent of the Takifugu pufferfish vertically transfers TTX to the larvae through its accumulation in the ovaries, and subsequent localization on the body surface of the larvae

Under the present study an online viscosimeter was developed on the basis of a sphere packing in a flow. Using the fundamentals of a sphere packing in a flow, the required interrelationships were developed and then converted so that the equations were suitable for realization in terms of measurement technique. Based on an existing laboratory facility, first test measurements were carried out using two non-Newtonian fluids. These measurements showed that the measurement principle developed here in its present form is suitable for online measurement and, in addition to this, can supply better results than conventional rheometers do. In the next step, an online system was designed and built. The tests permitted the conclusion that the present facility should be suitable for simple measurement with the corresponding simple accuracies. The present concept would be well suitable for online measurement in particular with regard to its simplicity, low price and simple operation. However, this can be proven only in prolonged operation under real conditions. Tbx3-dependent amplifying stem cell progeny drives interfollicular epidermal expansion during pregnancy and regeneration

妊娠期に腹部の皮膚が広がる仕組みの一端をマウスで解明. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2017-09-13.The skin surface area varies flexibly in response to body shape changes. Skin homeostasis is maintained by stem cells residing in the basal layer of the interfollicular epidermis. However, how the interfollicular epidermal stem cells response to physiological body shape changes remains elusive. Here, we identify a highly proliferative interfollicular epidermal basal cell population in the rapidly expanding abdominal skin of pregnant mice. These cells express Tbx3 that is necessary for their propagation to drive skin expansion. The Tbx3+ basal cells are generated from Axin2+ interfollicular epidermal stem cells through planar-oriented asymmetric or symmetric cell divisions, and express transit-amplifying cell marker CD71. This biased division of Axin2+ interfollicular epidermal stem cells is induced by Sfrp1 and Igfbp2 proteins secreted from dermal cells. The Tbx3+ basal cells promote wound repair, which is enhanced by Sfrp1 and Igfbp2. This study elucidates the interfollicular epidermal stem cell/progeny organisation during pregnancy and suggests its application in regenerative medicine

Favorable prognostic phenotype in myelodysplastic syndrome with der(1;7)(q10;p10)

Abstract Unbalanced translocation der(1;7)(q10;p10) is a characteristic chromosomal abnormality in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The current study revealed that among 13 MDS patients with der(1;7)(q10;p10), seven cases with no apparent dysplasia also had low numbers of myeloblasts in the bone marrow and a 3‐year survival rate of 86%; in contrast, the remaining six cases had a 3‐year survival rate of 0% (P = .003). It was therefore suggested that MDS patients with der(1;7)(q10;p10) are classified into a distinct group with a favorable prognosis and another distinct group with a very poor prognosis
