    Geomorphological units of mainland Portugal

    Get PDF

The Portuguese authors express their gratitude for the financial support given by the FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) to the Institute of Earth Sciences (Pole of the University of Minho), which partially supports this research. The effects of an educational program based on modeling and social stories on improvements in the social skills of students with autism

Social communication difficulties are one of the most common issues among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as ASD affects their social and academic lives and isolates them from their environment. Several studies that utilized video modeling, video self-modeling, or social stories (or social stories combined with video modeling) have yielded promising outcomes in improving the social skills of individuals with ASD. However, to date, the effects of the combination of all three strategies have not been studied. The current study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an educational program based on multiple strategies, including social stories, animated video modeling, and video self-modeling, to improve the social communication skills of a sample of six high-functioning students with ASD at the Autism Academy of Jordan. A mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) approach was used to examine the impact of the program on the experimental group. The results of the Mann–Whitney test indicated that compared to the monitoring group, all participants in the experimental group achieved significant improvements in the post-test of the Autism Social Skills Profile in both the domains of social reciprocity and social participation skills. Furthermore, the data from teachers' interviews, analyzed using WebQDA software, corroborated the results in terms of significant improvements in students’ social skills after the implementation of the educational program. The implications of the study for psychological and educational interventions are addressed, and research suggestions are made to promote the personal and social development of individuals with AS

    Ground-state configurations in ferromagnetic nanotori

Magnetization ground states are studied in toroidal nanomagnets. The energetics associated to the ferromagnetic, vortex and onion-like configurations are explicitly computed. The analysis reveals that the vortex appears to be the most prominent of such states, minimizing total energy in every torus with internal radius r≳10 nmr\gtrsim10\,{\rm nm} (for Permalloy). For r≲10 nmr\lesssim10\,{\rm nm} the vortex remains the most favorable pattern whenever R/ℓex≳1.5R/\ell_{ex}\gtrsim1.5 (RR is the torus external radius and ℓex\ell_{ex} is the exchange length), being substituted by the ferromagnetic state whenever R/ℓex≲1.5R/\ell_{ex}\lesssim1.5.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 apendices, Revtex forma

Abstract Culinary use of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) is appreciated across the whole of the Mediterranean, and the interest in this plant has been increasing due to be a source of bio-protectives compounds, such as fatty acids and antioxidants. However, their use may be difficult due to the accumulation of high contents of compounds harmful to human health, such as nitrate and oxalic acid. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of nitrogen fertilization on growth and yield parameters, and on nitrate and oxalic acid concentration in leaves and stems. Plants of golden-leafed purslane of sativa subspecies were grown in styrofoam boxes with substrate and fertigated 2 times per week along 4 weeks with ammonium-nitrate solution (16.9% NO3--N and 17.6% NH4+-N), for testing 4 nitrogen levels (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N ha-1). Plant growth, yield, nitrate and oxalic acid concentrations were significantly affected by nitrogen application. The best quantity/quality ratio was achieved in fertilization level of 60 kg N ha-1, in which the yield was 5.1 kg m-2 FW and nitrate concentration was 48.98 and 43.90 mg g-1 DW in leaf and stem, respectively, and oxalic acid concentration was 1.27 and 0.55 mg g-1 DW, in leaf and stem, respectively, values not harmful to consumer health

    Non universality of entanglement convertibility

Recently, it has been suggested that operational properties connected to quantum computation can be alternative indicators of quantum phase transitions. In this work we systematically study these operational properties in 1D systems that present phase transitions of different orders. For this purpose, we evaluate the local convertibility between bipartite ground states. Our results suggest that the operational properties, related to non-analyticities of the entanglement spectrum, are good detectors of explicit symmetries of the model, but not necessarily of phase transitions. We also show that thermodynamically equivalent phases, such as Luttinger liquids, may display different convertibility properties depending on the underlying microscopic model.Comment: 5 pages + references, 4 figures - improved versio
