    Increased Risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Mental Health Problems in Retired Professional Jockeys: A Cross-Sectional Study

    To examine the prevalence of chronic disease and mental health problems in retired professional, male jockeys compared to an age-matched reference population. A cross-sectional study comparing data from a cohort of retired professional jockeys with an age-matched general population sample. Male participants (age range: 50–89 years old) were used to compare health outcomes of self-reported physician-diagnosed conditions: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, depression and anxiety between study populations. Conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate associations between study groups and health outcome. In total, 810 participants (135 retired professional male jockeys and 675 participants from the reference population) were included, with an average age of 64.7±9.9 years old. Increased odds of having osteoporosis (OR=6.5, 95%CI 2.1–20.5), osteoarthritis (OR=7.5, 95%CI 4.6–12.2), anxiety (OR=2.8, 95%CI 1.3–5.9) and depression (OR=2.6, 95%CI 1.3–5.7) were seen in the retired professional jockeys. No differences were found for the remaining health outcomes. Retired professional jockeys had increased odds of musculoskeletal disease and mental health problems compared to the general population. Understanding the prevalence of chronic disease and mental health problems in retired professional jockeys will help inform screening and intervention strategies for jockeys

    Rapid Photocrosslinking of Silk Hydrogels with High Cell Density and Enhanced Shape Fidelity

    Silk fibroin hydrogels crosslinked through di-tyrosine bonds are clear, elastomeric constructs with immense potential in regenerative medicine applications. In this study, demonstrated is a new visible light-mediated photoredox system for di-tyrosine bond formation in silk fibroin that overcomes major limitations of current conventional enzymatic-based crosslinking. This photomediated system rapidly crosslinks silk fibroin (80%). The photocrosslinked silk hydrogels present more stable mechanical properties which do not undergo spontaneous transition to stiff, β-sheet-rich networks typically seen for enzymatically crosslinked systems. These hydrogels also support long-term culture of human articular chondrocytes, with excellent cartilage tissue formation. This system also facilitates the first demonstration of biofabrication of silk fibroin constructs in the absence of chemical modification of the protein structure or rheological additives. Cell-laden constructs with complex, ordered, graduated architectures, and high resolution (40 µm) are fabricated using the photocrosslinking system, which cannot be achieved using the enzymatic crosslinking system. Taken together, this work demonstrates the immense potential of a new crosslinking approach for fabrication of elastomeric silk hydrogels with applications in biofabrication and tissue regeneration

    BIOPSIA RENAL PERCUTÂNEA MONITORIZADA POR ULTRASSONOGRAFIA EM CÃES

    In order to evaluate the ultrasound-guided percutaneousrenal biopsy technique in dogs, the complications of the procedureand the quality of the samples were studied in 43 health adult dogs,allocated into two groups: Group 1 (n=20) and 2 (n=23), that hadthree attempts of collection for the biopsy taken from the left endright kidney, respectively. The biopsies were obtained with “Trucut”semi-automatic, 16 gauge needles. The dogs were evaluatedbefore and after the procedure and the quality of the sample wasevaluated. The presence of at least five glomeruli was used as acriteria for sample quality. Following the renal biopsy, there wasa decrease in the hematocrit, without clinical consequences, presenceof blood in urine and transitory perirenal hematomas thatresolved in 72 hours. There were no major complications or death,what demonstrates the safety of the technique. Ninety-four percentof the biopsy samples had renal tissue and 76% presented five ormore glomeruli (32% and 44% in Groups 1 and 2, respectively). Inconclusion, the technique was safe and showed diagnostic value

    Serum biomarkers associated with SARS-CoV-2 severity

    Immunity with SARS-CoV-2 infection during the acute phase is not sufficiently well understood to differentiate mild from severe cases and identify prognostic markers. We evaluated the immune response profile using a total of 71 biomarkers in sera from patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, confirmed by RT-PCR and controls. We correlated biological marker levels with negative control (C) asymptomatic (A), nonhospitalized (mild cases-M), and hospitalized (severe cases-S) groups. Among angiogenesis markers, we identified biomarkers that were more frequently elevated in severe cases when compared to the other groups (C, A, and M). Among cardiovascular diseases, there were biomarkers with differences between the groups, with D-dimer, GDF-15, and sICAM-1 higher in the S group. The levels of the biomarkers Myoglobin and P-Selectin were lower among patients in group M compared to those in groups S and A. Important differences in cytokines and chemokines according to the clinical course were identified. Severe cases presented altered levels when compared to group C. This study helps to characterize biological markers related to angiogenesis, growth factors, heart disease, and cytokine/chemokine production in individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, offering prognostic signatures and a basis for understanding the biological factors in disease severity
