On the accuracy of the melting curves drawn from modelling a solid as an elastic medium
An ongoing problem in the study of a classical many-body system is the
characterization of its equilibrium behaviour by theory or numerical
simulation. For purely repulsive particles, locating the melting line in the
pressure-temperature plane can be especially hard if the interparticle
potential has a softened core or contains some adjustable parameters. A method
is hereby presented that yields reliable melting-curve topologies with
negligible computational effort. It is obtained by combining the Lindemann
melting criterion with a description of the solid phase as an elastic
continuum. A number of examples are given in order to illustrate the scope of
the method and possible shortcomings. For a two-body repulsion of Gaussian
shape, the outcome of the present approach compares favourably with the more
accurate but also more computationally demanding self-consistent harmonic

Node-like excitations in superconducting PbMo6S8 probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy
We present the first scanning tunneling spectroscopy study on the Chevrel
phase PbMo6S8, an extreme type II superconductor with a coherence length only
slightly larger than in high-Tc cuprates. Tunneling spectra measured on
atomically flat terraces are spatially homogeneous and show well-defined
coherence peaks. The low-energy spectral weight, the zero bias conductance and
the temperature dependence of the gap are incompatible with a conventional
isotropic s-wave interpretation, revealing the presence of low-energy
excitations in the superconducting state. We show that our data are consistent
with the presence of nodes in the superconducting gap.Comment: To appear in PRB; 5 pages, 4 figure
Heavy quasiparticles in the ferromagnetic superconductor ZrZn2
We report a study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the normal state of the
ferromagnetic superconductor ZrZn2. Our results are generally consistent with
an LMTO band structure calculation which predicts four exchange-split Fermi
surface sheets. Quasiparticle effective masses are enhanced by a factor of
about 4.9 implying a strong coupling to magnetic excitations or phonons. Our
measurements provide insight in to the mechanism for superconductivity and
unusual thermodynamic properties of ZrZn2.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures (one color
A large stellar evolution database for population synthesis studies. II. Stellar models and isochrones for an alpha-enhanced metal distribution
[Abridged] We present a large, new set of stellar evolution models and
isochrones for an alpha-enhanced metal distribution typical of Galactic halo
and bulge stars; it represents a homogeneous extension of our stellar model
library for a distribution already presented in Pietrinferni et al.(2004). The
effect of the alpha-element enhancement has been properly taken into account in
the nuclear network, opacity, equation of state and, for the first time, the
bolometric corrections, and color transformations. This allows us to avoid the
inconsistent use - common to all alpha-enhanced model libraries currently
available - of scaled-solar bolometric corrections and color transformations
for alpha-enhanced models and isochrones. We show how bolometric corrections to
magnitudes obtained for the U,B portion of stellar spectra for T_{eff}<=6500K,
are significantly affected by the metal mixture, especially at the higher
metallicities. We also provide complete sets of evolutionary models for
low-mass, He-burning stellar structures covering the whole metallicity range,
to enable synthetic horizontal branch simulations. We compare our database with
several widely used stellar model libraries from different authors, as well as
with various observed color magnitude and color-color diagrams (Johnson-Cousins
BVI and near infrared magnitudes, Stromgren colors) of Galactic field stars and
globular clusters. We also test our isochrones comparing integrated optical
colors and Surface Brightness Fluctuation magnitudes with selected globular
cluster data. We find a general satisfactory agreement with the empirical

Multi-band Superconductivity in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and PbMo6S8
Sub-Kelvin scanning tunnelling spectroscopy in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and
PbMo6S8 reveals two distinct superconducting gaps with Delta_1 = 3 meV, Delta_2
~ 1.0 meV and Delta_1 = 3.1 meV, Delta_2 ~ 1.4 meV respectively. The gap
distribution is strongly anisotropic, with Delta_2 predominantly seen when
scanning across unit-cell steps on the (001) sample surface. The spectra are
well-fitted by an anisotropic two-band BCS s-wave gap function. Our
spectroscopic data are confirmed by electronic heat capacity measurements which
also provide evidence for a twin-gap scenario.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Porcine sclera as a model of human sclera for in vitro transport experiments: histology, SEM, and comparative permeability
PURPOSE:
To evaluate porcine sclera as a model of human sclera for in vitro studies of transscleral drug delivery of both low and high molecular weight compounds.
METHODS:
Human and porcine scleras were characterized for thickness and water content. The tissue surface was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the histology was studied with hematoxylin-eosin staining. Comparative permeation experiments were performed using three model molecules, acetaminophen as the model compound for small molecules; a linear dextran with a molecular weight of 120 kDa as the model compound for high molecular weight drugs; and insulin, which was chosen as the model protein. Permeation parameters such as flux, lag time, and permeability coefficient were determined and compared.
RESULTS:
Human and porcine scleras have a similar histology and collagen bundle organization. The water content is approx 70% for both tissues while a statistically significant difference was found for the thickness, porcine sclera being approximately twofold thicker than human sclera. Differences in thickness produced differences in the permeability coefficient. In fact, human sclera was found to be two to threefold more permeable toward the three molecules studied than porcine sclera.
CONCLUSIONS:
The results obtained in the present paper prove that porcine sclera can be considered a good model for human sclera for in vitro permeation experiments of both low and high molecular weight compounds. In fact, if the different tissue thickness is taken into account, comparable permeability was demonstrated. This suggests a possible use of this model in the evaluation of the transscleral permeation of new biotech compounds, which currently represent the most innovative and efficient therapeutic options for the treatment of ocular diseases
Microbiota Composition and Probiotics Supplementations on Sleep Quality—A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
The gut microbiota (GM) plays a crucial role in human health. The bidirectional interaction between GM and the central nervous system may occur via the microbiota-gut-brain axis, possibly regulating the sleep/wake cycle. Recent reports highlight associations between intestinal dysbiosis and sleep disorders, suggesting that probiotics could ameliorate this condition. However, data are poor and inconsistent. The aim of this quantitative metanalytic study is to assess the GM composition in sleep disturbances and evaluate probiotics' effectiveness for managing sleep disorders. A systematic review was carried out until July 2022 in online databases, limiting the literature research to human studies and English language articles. No significant GM diversity between patients with sleep disturbances versus healthy controls was found, revealed by alpha-diversity, while beta-diversity is missing due to lack of proper reporting. However, probiotics supplementation significantly reduced the self-assessed parameter of sleep quality and disturbances Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score compared with the placebo. No difference in the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score was found. While available data suggest that GM diversity is not related to sleep disturbances, probiotics administration strongly improves sleep quality as a subjective perception. However, heterogeneity of data reporting in the scientific literature should be considered as a limitation
Symmetry of the order parameter in superconducting ZrZn_2
We apply symmetry considerations to study the possible superconducting order
parameters in ferromagnetic ZrZn_2. We predict that the presence and the
location of the superconducting gap nodes depend on the direction of
magnetization M. In particular, if M is directed along the z axis, then the
order parameter should always have zeros. We also discuss how to determine the

Test of candidate light distributors for the muon (g2) laser calibration system
The new muon (g-2) experiment E989 at Fermilab will be equipped with a laser
calibration system for all the 1296 channels of the calorimeters. An
integrating sphere and an alternative system based on an engineered diffuser
have been considered as possible light distributors for the experiment. We
present here a detailed comparison of the two based on temporal response,
