Health professionals and social movements : building educational process and the exercise of citzenship

A partir das experiências das autoras no serviço público de saúde, este artigo aborda a participação e a atuação dos profissionais de saúde nos movimentos populares. Esses movimentos são aqui identificados através de uma breve retrospectiva histórica, desde a Comissão Interinstitucional Municipal de Saúde até o Conselho Municipl de Saúde, na cidade de Porto Alegre, no Estado do Rio Grande do saul, enfatizando que o exercício da cidadania, aqui entendido como um processo educativo, ocorre na inter-relação entre profissionais e usuários, nas trocas de saberes.Based on the authors' experiences on the public service of health, this article approaches the participation and performance of health professionals in social movements. These movements are here identified through a brief historical retrospective, from the Municipal lnterinstitucional Commission of Health to the Municipal Council of Health, at the city of Porto Alegre (R.S., Brazil), emphasizing that the exercise of citizenship, here acknowledged as an educational process, happens by the professional interrelation with users of the health services in constant exchanges of knowledge.A partir de las experiencias de las autoras en el servicio publico de salud, este articulo aborda la participación y la actuación de los profesionales de la salud en los movimientos populares. Homicides among teenagers in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil : vulnerability, susceptibility, and gender cultures

Este é um estudo quanti/qualitativo sobre homicídios entre adolescentes em Porto Alegre, tendo como base uma seriação histórica para a década de 90 e as histórias de vida e morte nesse grupo, particularizando o ano de 1997. Nesse ano houve 68 homicídios na faixa etária de 10 a 19 anos, dos quais 62 do sexo masculino e 6 do sexo feminino, numa razão de 10:1, mostrando que os homens estão mais vulneráveis e suscetíveis a morrer por essa causa de morte. Admite-se, a partir disso, que as formas de morrer sofrem influência das culturas de gênero e os homicídios se sustentam em símbolos e posições de poder que caracterizam um tipo de masculinidade. Essa expressão de masculinidade na forma de violência mostra sua face também no domínio sobre o corpo feminino, observado nas situações de homicídio envolvendo as mulheres adolescentes. Esses achados apontam para a conotação relacional e para a assimetria social, expressão das culturas de gênero, como atributos explicativos. As histórias de vida e morte desses adolescentes mostram a pertinência das análises baseadas no gênero como categoria teórico-analítica, além das análises que contemplam os aspectos sócio-econômicos e as iniqüidades sociais.The authors present a quantitative and qualitative study on homicides among teenagers in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, based on a historical series during the 1990s and the life and death histories in this group, with a special focus on 1997.
