Objective: Synthesis of novel pyrazolines (P2-P4 & P7-P9) from the chalcones (C2-C10) obtained by condensing different aldehydes with 2-acetyl- 5-bromothiophene and evaluates them for in vitro anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Methods: The synthesized pyrazolines and chalcones were screened for anticancer activity against human breast cancer cell lines-MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468 in the range of 100 nm to 100 µm. Inhibition of bovine albumin denaturation and heat-induced hemolysis in vitro methods were followed to screen for anti-inflammatory activity. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed based on the IR, 1H NMR and mass spectral data. Results: Among the synthesized compounds, methoxy trisubstituted pyrazoline derivative (P6) exhibited an interesting profile of anticancer activity against MCF-7 cell line with GI50<0.1 μ M. similar to that of the standard drug doxorubicin. Compounds C8, P8, P3 have moderate anti-inflammatory activity in bovine denaturation and heat induced hemolytic method. Conclusion: Novel pyrazolines and chalcones were synthesized and evaluated for anticancer and anti-inflammatory activity. The methoxy containing compounds one of which P6 found to be active against MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. The chloro-substituted compounds found to show anti-inflammatory activity.Â

The study was an attempt to examine the size frequency distribution, length-weight relationship and morphometric variation of the Acetes japonicus from four different sides of Kedah coastal waters between March to May 2007 by using SPSS and PRIMER software. The average total length of the females from Batu Lintang and male of Tg. Dawai were the highest with the values of 17.07 and 13.93 mm, respectively. The growth co-efficient (b) values ranged between 2.0 to 4.0, indicating varieties of the growth pattern (negative allometric, isometric and positive allometric) for A. japonicus. The highest correlation of length-length relationship in female and male were found in the population of Kuala Sala. The morphological characteristics showed variation among populations. The highest similarity of morphometric characteristics was between Batu Lintang and Tg. Dawai for all groups (female, male, combined sexes)

The Length-weight Relationship (LWR) and condition factor (K) of three most dominant species from the Tasik Kenyir was evaluated from February 2008 to January 2009. The data were analyzed by the equation of W = aLb and were transferred to Log10W = Log10 a + b Log10 L, for the length-weight relationship and K = W x 100 L-3 for the condition factor. The relative growth coefficient (b) values for Barbodes schwanenfeldii was 2.784, Notopterus sp. was 1.905 and Hampala macrolepidota was at 3.043. The condition factor values varied seasonally for each species that range from 2.48±0.39 to 2.68±0.28 for B. schwanenfeldii, 0.95±0.10 to 1.03±0.20 for Notopterus sp. and from 2.17±0.19 to 2.35±0.39 for H. macrolepidota

Studies on feeding habits and seasonal variation of diet of fish larvae of family Clupeidae was conducted from October 2007 to September 2008 in the estuary of Sg. Pendas, Gelang Patah, Johor, Malaysia. The diet composition were grouped into seven major categories consisted of phytoplankton, zooplankton, plant-like matter, debris, fragment of copepod, algae and unidentified food items. The most predominant food items in the gut of clupeids was phytoplankton (82.53%), followed by plant-like matter (7.34%), debris (4.86%), fragment of copepods (2.69%), algae (0.92%), unidentified items (0.77%) and zooplankton (0.54%)
