Testing LSND at long-baseline neutrino experiments
Recently it was suggested that two very different mass-squared differences
play a role in atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The larger of these also
accounts for the LSND result and the smaller of these also drives the solar
neutrino oscillations. We consider the predictions of this scheme for
long-baseline experiments. We find that high statistics experiments, such as
MINOS, can observe a clean signal for this scheme, which is clearly
distinguishable from the usual scheme of atmospheric neutrino oscillations
driven by a single mass-squared difference.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of furfural by isonicotinium dichromate
The kinetics of oxidation of furfural by isonicotinium dichromate(INDC) has been studied in a 50% (v/v) acetic acid- water medium in the presence of perchloric acid at 303 K. The reaction is first order each in [isonicotinium dichromate],[furfural] and hydrogen ion concentration. The rate of oxidation increases with decrease in dielectric constant of solvent suggests ion-dipole interaction. Increase in ionic strength by the addition of sodium perchlorate has no effect on the rate constant. There is no polymerization with acrylonitrile and absence of free radical was proved.Furoic acid has been identified as the product of oxidation.The rate of the reaction has been conducted at fourdifferent temperatures and activation parameters werecalculated. From the observed kinetic results, a suitablemechanism with rate law has been proposed
Detecting itinerant single microwave photons
Single photon detectors are fundamental tools of investigation in quantum
optics and play a central role in measurement theory and quantum informatics.
Photodetectors based on different technologies exist at optical frequencies and
much effort is currently being spent on pushing their efficiencies to meet the
demands coming from the quantum computing and quantum communication proposals.
In the microwave regime however, a single photon detector has remained elusive
although several theoretical proposals have been put forth. In this article, we
review these recent proposals, especially focusing on non-destructive detectors
of propagating microwave photons. These detection schemes using superconducting
artificial atoms can reach detection efficiencies of 90\% with existing
technologies and are ripe for experimental investigations.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
A New Platform for Editing Digital Multimedia : the eTalks
The eTalks are a new digital multimedia editing plaform developed at the University of Lausanne: their application is implemented via an easy-to-use editor interface, designed for the use of researchers themselves, to create and edit original eTalks. This permits the linking together of images, sounds and textual materials with hyperlinks, enriching it with relevant information. The final release of eTalks allows complete ‘citability’ of its contents: each and every portion of the researchers' talks can be precisely referred to and thus cited with a specific identifier, just like any traditional, paper-based scientific publication but with all the potential for plural literacies. It is openly accessible and the code is open source, including guidelines to install the eTalks. It contributes to the development of multiliteracies in the digital academic production of knowledge
One pion events by atmospheric neutrinos: A three flavor analysis
We study the one-pion events produced via neutral current (NC) and charged
current (CC) interactions by the atmospheric neutrinos. We analyze the ratios
of these events in the framework of oscillations between three neutrino
flavors. The ratios of the CC events induced by to that of the NC
events and a similar ratio defined with help us in distinguishing the
