    An Insight into the Growth of New Retail Formats in India

    The Indian retail sector is going through a transformation and this emerging market is witnessing a significant change in its growth and investment pattern. Both existing and new players are experimenting with new retail formats. Currently two popular formats -hypermarkets and supermarkets are growing very fast. Apart from the brick -mortar formats, brick -click and click-click formats are also increasingly visible on the Indian retail landscape. Consumer dynamics in India is changing and the retailers need to take note of this and formulate their strategies and tactics to deliver value to the consumer. This paper investigates modern retail developments and growth of modern formats in this country. We also discuss the challenges and opportunities available to the retailers to succeed in this country.

    Possible role of alternative respiration in temperature rise of water stressed plants

    Role of alternative respiration, a thermogenic pathway, was evaluated in temperature rise of water stressed plants. Transpiration rate, plant temperature and respiratory dynamics were monitored in field grown irrigated and unirrigated sorghum(Sorghum vulgare Pers.) hybrid CSH 6 and pearl millet(Pennirelum typhoider (Burm. f.) var. J 104 for 22 days. Transpiration rate of irrigated plants was always higher than the unirrigated plants. But the plant temperature and the alternative respiration activity of irrigated plants was always lower than unirrigated plants. The reduction in transpiration rate of unirrigated pearl millet was more as compared to unirrigated sorghum. Nonetheless, alternative respiration activity was higher in unirrigated sorghum as compared to unirrigated pearl millet. Temperature of unirrigated sorghum plants increased by 10.4°C during 22 days and it was 8.0°C higher than irrigated sorghum at day 22. Stressed pearl millet showed an increase of 3.9°C during 22 days and it was 2.9°C higher than the irrigated pearl millet at day 22. It is suggested that the heat released because of the alternative respiration activity also contributes towards temperature rise of water stressed plants

    Temperature Stabilization and Value Addition in Solar Drying of Arid Area Horticulture Products with Phase Change Materials and High Heat Capacity Materials

    Abstract: Arid and desert areas are home to priceless medicinal plants and horticulture produce. Scattered production, absence of preservation technology and specialized transportation facility has hindered economic exploitation of these produce. Family size solar dryer in the required temperature range is best suited for these regions. Decentralized mode of solar drying of horticulture produce and easy transportation has immense potential to contribute in the development of the region. In this paper, a typical solar dryer is designed and experimentally evaluated using a combination of High Heat Capacity Material (HHCM) and Phase Change Material (PCM). The result show that high storage density, with small temperature swing of PCM in the HHCM-PCM combine, allows the produce to dry in a single day without loss of vitamins and/or changes in taste and odor

    Background: Neck shaft angle is the angle formed between the long axis of shaft and long axis of neck. Neck shaft angle of femur is an important parameter considering the biomechanics of hip joint. Neck shaft angle gives important information regarding race to which they belong. Normal neck shaft angle is in the range of 1200 -1400. Objective of the study was to find out the neck shaft angle of femur and correlate with the previous study.Methods: present study was conducted on 60 dry femur collected from different medical colleges of Bihar. The neck shaft angle was measured by Goniometer.Results: In this study the neck shaft angle of femur was 130.820, in male neck shaft angle of femur was 130.280 and in females it was 131.420.Conclusions: There is no significance difference between the male and female neck shaft angle. Orthopaedists use the normal range and mean of the neck shaft angle in diagnosis and treatment of the disease of hip. The angle is increased in poliomyelitis, congenital subluxation and dislocation of hip and decreased in congenital coxa vara

    A study to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease patients from North India

    Background: Worldwide, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the one of the leading cause of chronic morbidity and mortality. COPD is one of the diseases in which smoking is the common and important risk factor when it is associated with Metabolic syndrome (MetS). The individual components of MetS, i.e., obesity, dyslipidemia, fasting hyperglycaemia, and hypertension were independently associated with impairment of lung function too. The objective of this study is to find out the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among COPD patients.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in department of Respiratory Diseases and a total of 70 COPD patients were included in the study, which were enrolled for treatment from July 2016 to July 2017. The severity level in patients with COPD were determined according to GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease), 2015 guideline. International Diabetes Federation (IDF) guideline; (2005) was used in diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.Results: Seventy patients with COPD were enrolled during the study period. There were 45 males (64.2%) and 25(35.7%) females. Mean age of male patients was 58.67±9.87 years, while mean age of female patients was 57.23±10.4 years (35-87 years). Mean BMI of male was 24.33±6.64 kg/m2, while in case of female it was 30.07±6.95 kg/m2 and overall mean BMI of study population was 26.22±7.22 kg/m2. The mean   waist circumference of male was 86.91±13.31 cm while in female it was 87.18±14.51 cm. The Overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 31.34% and most common in GOLD stage-3 (47.06%), followed by stage-2 (40%), followed by stage-4 (25.71%) and 7.4 % in GOLD stage -1.Conclusions: The presence of metabolic syndrome is common in patients with COPD and, all COPD patients should be considered for screening for it

    Action potential- a possible signal in root to shoot communication caused by water deficit around roots of sunflower seedling

    Exposure of sunflower roots to polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) induced osmotic stress caused a rapid depolarization of surface electrical potential at the shoot apex within 25 seconds. It was found that while the leaf water potential and the osmotic potential in control seedlings showed no variation during the entire period of experimentation, the leaf water potential in polyethylene glycol treated seedlings started decreasing after 2 min of treatment without any marked change in the osmotic potential. Similarly, the stomatal resistance in control seedlings remained constant during the course of experimentation but the polyethylene glycol treatment affected the stomatal resistance within 30 seconds and it continued to increase 3 min after the treatment. All these events occur in a time scale of seconds to minutes and in a sequence. It is concluded that the action potential acts as a signal in root-to-shoot communication under osmotic stress

    Adsorbed Natural Gas Storage for Vehicular Applications

    The use of adsorbed natural gas (ANG) as a transportation fuel is a relatively cleaner alternative compared to that of gasoline and is important from the perspective of environmental safety. However, unlike gasoline and diesel, natural gas requires compression, liquefaction, and adsorption techniques for its storage, as it has a very low volumetric energy density. Among all storage techniques, adsorption-based natural gas (ANG) storage is considered as more economical and relatively safe technology due to its mild temperature and pressure conditions for the storage. This chapter will summarize the recent advances in the area of ANG with reference to various synthetic storage materials recently developed for the purpose and their efficiency towards storage and deliverability of natural gas. Particular emphasis will be given to adsorbents based on porous carbon materials, metal organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks for the said application. The synthetic procedure for the above adsorbents, followed by their efficiency to store and deliver natural gas, will be discussed. Finally, in the conclusion, the future scope of the technology will be summarized

    Eff ect of participatory women’s groups facilitated by Accredited Social Health Activists on birth outcomes in rural eastern India: a cluster-randomised controlled trial

    Background A quarter of the world’s neonatal deaths and 15% of maternal deaths happen in India. Few community-based strategies to improve maternal and newborn health have been tested through the country’s government-approved Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). We aimed to test the eff ect of participatory women’s groups facilitated by ASHAs on birth outcomes, including neonatal mortality. Methods In this cluster-randomised controlled trial of a community intervention to improve maternal and newborn health, we randomly assigned (1:1) geographical clusters in rural Jharkhand and Odisha, eastern India to intervention (participatory women’s groups) or control (no women’s groups). Study participants were women of reproductive age (15–49 years) who gave birth between Sept 1, 2009, and Dec 31, 2012. In the intervention group, ASHAs supported women’s groups through a participatory learning and action meeting cycle. Groups discussed and prioritised maternal and newborn health problems, identifi ed strategies to address them, implemented the strategies, and assessed their progress. We identifi ed births, stillbirths, and neonatal deaths, and interviewed mothers 6 weeks after delivery. The primary outcome was neonatal mortality over a 2 year follow up. Analyses were by intention to treat. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN31567106. Findings Between September, 2009, and December, 2012, we randomly assigned 30 clusters (estimated population 156 519) to intervention (15 clusters, estimated population n=82 702) or control (15 clusters, n=73 817). During the follow-up period (Jan 1, 2011, to Dec 31, 2012), we identifi ed 3700 births in the intervention group and 3519 in the control group. One intervention cluster was lost to follow up. The neonatal mortality rate during this period was 30 per 1000 livebirths in the intervention group and 44 per 1000 livebirths in the control group (odds ratio [OR] 0.69, 95% CI 0·53–0·89). Interpretation ASHAs can successfully reduce neonatal mortality through participatory meetings with women’s groups. This is a scalable community-based approach to improving neonatal survival in rural, underserved areas of India
