Solving Sudoku from an Image using Modular Architecture Approach
Sudoku puzzles can be found in various physical forms in newspapers, magazines and elsewhere. It may often be desirable to convert this puzzle into a digital format for ease of solving. This paper proposes a method for extracting and solving a Sudoku puzzle captured in an image. AI techniques can then be applied to solve the Sudoku puzzle. A modular architecture is created for this purpose. Modules can be replaced as needed, making it easier to improve and maintain an application using the proposed architecture

Feasibility Study of Processing Estane-based LOVA Gun Propellant
Low vulnerability ammunition (LOVA) propellant are currently being developed globally toreplace all types of single-base, double-base and triple-base gun propellants, because LOVApropellants possess advantage like low vulnerability without compromising on ballistic properties.The objective of present study is to establish processing of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE);estane-based LOVA gun propellant in cord/heptatubular geometry. Keeping in view variousadvantages of TPE such as simple processing, greater dimensional stability, lower productionlosses, superior insensitivity, and mechanical properties of the propellants, estane 5731(polyurethane-ester-MDI, aromatic polyester) is selected for feasibility study as a binder inLOVA-based gun propellant composition, processed by solvent and semi-solvent methods andcompared feasibility of processing as well as their evaluation wrt ballistics, vulnerability, andmechanical properties. The results indicate that gun propellants processed by semi-solventmethod and extruded at elevated temperatures exhibit better ballistics, mechanical, andvulnerability properties
Glycidyl Azide Polymer-based Enhanced Energy LOVA Gun Propellant
In this study, cyclotrimethylene trinitramine propellants with triacetin (TA)-plasticisedcellulose acetate (CA) and nitrocellulose (NC) combination as binders were evaluated for lowvulnerable ammunition (LOVA). Triacetin was replaced by energetic plasticiser; glycidyl azidepolymer (GAP) in increments to enhance the performance in terms of force constant . In additionto ballistics, parameters like vulnerability, mechanical and thermal properties of GAP-basedpropellants in comparison to those of TA-based propellants, were also determined. The studybrings out that the incorporation of 2-6 per cent GAP in place of TA resulted in the enhancementof force constant by 22-70 J/g and improved overall combustion characteristics. DSC revealedthat thermal decomposition of GAP-LOVA propellants evolved more energy than TA-LOVApropellants. GAP-based LOVA propellant similar to TA-plasticised LOVA propellant, was foundsuperior to NQ propellant in vulnerability tests as well as in hot fragment conductive ignition(HFCI) studies. Development and evaluation of an illustrated paediatric leaflet âComing to Hospital: a guide to what goes onâ
Background: A paediatric information leaflet was produced to better prepare patients for time spent in hospital and to improve experience by informing them what to expect. Methods: The âComing to Hospitalâ leaflet was designed with input from paediatric research groups, and in collaboration with a childrenâs author and publishing company. A questionnaire to evaluate the leaflet was developed; face validity was established in a pilot. The real-time patient experience of these leaflets was evaluated on paediatric wards in a university hospital. Results: The evaluation revealed that a significant majority of children âreally likedâ the leaflet and found it helpful. 53 out of 72 of children reported that the leaflet made them feel âhappyâ or âcalmâ, with no children responding that it made them feel âvery worriedâ. The leaflet was found to be informative, well presented and reassuring. Many parents stated that they wished they had received the leaflet prior to their childâs first hospital visit. Suggestions for changes to the leaflet were minimal; it was considered to include all relevant information. Conclusion: A leaflet designed by clinical staff, patients and a publishing company was welcomed by paediatric patients and their parents. Patients reported it made them feel calmer. Such a leaflet should be available widely to improve childrenâs experience of coming to hospital. Collaborations between clinicians, academics and publishing companies can produce positive results for the paediatric population
Global Monitoring of Atmospheric Trace Gases, Clouds and Aerosols from UV/vis/NIR Satellite Instruments: Currents Status and Near Future Perspectives
A new generation of UV/vis/nearâIR satellite instruments like GOME (since 1995), SCIAMACHY (since 2002), OMI (since 2004), and GOMEâ2 (since 2006) allows to measure several important stratospheric and tropospheric trace gases like O_3, NO_2, OClO, HCHO, SO_2, BrO, and H_2O as well as clouds and aerosols from space. Because of its extended spectral range, the SCIAMACHY instrument also allows the retrieval of Greenhouse gases (CO_2, CH_4) and CO in the near IR. Almost all of the tropospheric trace gases are observed by these instruments for the first time. From satellite data it is possible to investigate the temporal and spatial variation. Also different sources can be characterised and quantified. The derived global distributions can serve as input and for the validation of atmospheric models. Here we give an overview on the current status of these new instruments and data products and their recent applications to various atmospheric and oceanic phenomena
Nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage in South Asian infants:Results of observational cohort studies in vaccinated and unvaccinated populations
BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage (NPC) is a prerequisite for invasive pneumococcal disease and reduced carriage of vaccine serotypes is a marker for the protection offered by the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). The present study reports NPC during the first year of life in a vaccinated (with PCV10) cohort in Bangladesh and an unvaccinated cohort in India. METHODS: A total of 450 and 459 infants were recruited from India and Bangladesh respectively within 0-7 days after birth. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected at baseline, 18 and 36 weeks after birth. The swabs were processed for pneumococcal culture and identification of serotypes by the Quellung test and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). An identical protocol was applied at both sites. RESULTS: Prevalence of NPC was 48% in the Indian and 54.8% in the Bangladeshi cohort at 18 weeks. It increased to 53% and 64.8% respectively at 36 weeks. The average prevalence of vaccine serotypes was higher in the Indian cohort (17.8% vs 9.8% for PCV-10 and 26.1% vs17.6% for PCV-13) with 6A, 6B, 19F, 23F, and 19A as the common serotypes. On the other hand, the prevalence of non-vaccine serotypes was higher (43.6% vs 27.1% for non-PCV13) in the Bangladeshi cohort with 34, 15B, 17F, and 35B as the common serotypes. Overcrowding was associated with increased risk of pneumococcal carriage. The present PCV-13 vaccine would cover 28%-30% and 47%-48% serotypes in the Bangladeshi and Indian cohorts respectively. CONCLUSIONS: South Asian infants get colonised with pneumococci early in infancy; predominantly vaccine serotypes in PCV naĂŻve population (India) and non-vaccine serotypes in the vaccinated population (Bangladesh). These local findings are important to inform the public health policy and the development of higher valent pneumococcal vaccines

Membrane fractionation, super-resolution imaging, proximity ligation, coimmunoprecipitation, and single-molecule pull-down demonstrated a pool of β1ARs in mouse hearts that were associated with sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase at the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Local PKA (protein kinase A) activation was measured using a PKA biosensor targeted at either the plasma membrane (PM) or SR. Compared with wild-type, myocytes lacking OCT3 (OCT3-KO [OCT3 knockout]) responded identically to the membrane-permeant βAR agonist isoproterenol in PKA activation at both PM and SR. The same was true at the PM for membrane-impermeant norepinephrine, but the SR response to norepinephrine was suppressed in OCT3-KO myocytes. This differential effect was recapitulated in phosphorylation of the SR-pump regulator phospholamban. Similarly, OCT3-KO selectively suppressed calcium transients and contraction responses to norepinephrine but not isoproterenol. Furthermore, sotalol, a membrane-impermeant βAR-blocker, suppressed isoproterenol-induced PKA activation at the PM but permitted PKA activation at the SR, phospholamban phosphorylation, and contractility. Moreover, pretreatment with sotalol in OCT3-KO myocytes prevented norepinephrine-induced PKA activation at both PM and the SR and contractility. Conclusions:
Functional β1ARs exists at the SR and is critical for PKA-mediated phosphorylation of phospholamban and cardiac contractility upon catecholamine stimulation. Activation of these intracellular β1ARs requires catecholamine transport via OCT3
Bodyweight Perceptions among Texas Women: The Effects of Religion, Race/Ethnicity, and Citizenship Status
Despite previous work exploring linkages between religious participation and health, little research has looked at the role of religion in affecting bodyweight perceptions. Using the theoretical model developed by Levin et al. (Sociol Q 36(1):157â173, 1995) on the multidimensionality of religious participation, we develop several hypotheses and test them by using data from the 2004 Survey of Texas Adults. We estimate multinomial logistic regression models to determine the relative risk of women perceiving themselves as overweight. Results indicate that religious attendance lowers risk of women perceiving themselves as very overweight. Citizenship status was an important factor for Latinas, with noncitizens being less likely to see themselves as overweight. We also test interaction effects between religion and race. Religious attendance and prayer have a moderating effect among Latina non-citizens so that among these women, attendance and prayer intensify perceptions of feeling less overweight when compared to their white counterparts. Among African American women, the effect of increased church attendance leads to perceptions of being overweight. Prayer is also a correlate of overweight perceptions but only among African American women. We close with a discussion that highlights key implications from our findings, note study limitations, and several promising avenues for future research
Calcitonin gene-related peptide stimulates proliferation of alveolar epithelial cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Alveolar epithelial cells are known as progenitor cells for the restoration from the damage in the lung. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has been reported to play an important role in the proliferation of various types of epithelial and endothelial cells. We investigated the effects of CGRP on the proliferation of alveolar epithelial cells <it>in vitro </it>and <it>in vivo</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A549 cells were cultured in Dulbecco Modified Eagle Medium with 5% fatal bovin serum for 24 hours, then CGRP was added <it>in vitro</it>. The proliferation of DNA synthesis was measured using 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine, an analog of thymidine, by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.</p> <p>As one intracellular response to CGRP, we examined activation of p44/42- extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway by adding CGRP, using western blotting method.</p> <p>Recombinant adenovirus encoding nuclear-targeted-human β-CGRP (rhCGRP) was administered into Male Wister rat (n = 5, 10 weeks old) lungs by intratracheal instillation <it>in vivo</it>. 7 days after the administration of CGRP, rat lungs were harvested and histological findings and immunohistochemical staining of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were evaluated to examine cell proliferation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>In vitro </it>study, CGRP increased the proliferation of A549 cells in a dose and time dependent manner. CGRP8-37 (inhibitor of CGRP receptor) decreased CGRP induced proliferation of DNA synthesis. Phosphorylation of ERK pathway was observed within 15 minutes and peaked in one hour. U0126 (inhibitor of ERK pathway) decreased CGRP induced proliferation of DNA synthesis.<it>In vivo </it>study, histological examination of the lung indicated proliferation of alveolar epithelial cells in the rhCGRP-treated group and the nuclei of alveolar epithelial cells were positive for PCNA immunostaining.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this study, we conclude that CGRP stimulates proliferation of human alveolar epithelial cells <it>in vivo </it>and <it>in vitro</it>.</p
