Enhancement and suppression effects resulting from information structuring in sentences
Information structuring through the use of cleft sentences increases the processing efficiency of references to elements within the scope of focus. Furthermore, there is evidence that putting certain types of emphasis on individual words not only enhances their subsequent processing, but also protects these words from becoming suppressed in the wake of subsequent information, suggesting mechanisms of enhancement and suppression. In Experiment 1, we showed that clefted constructions facilitate the integration of subsequent sentences that make reference to elements within the scope of focus, and that they decrease the efficiency with reference to elements outside of the scope of focus. In Experiment 2, using an auditory text-change-detection paradigm, we showed that focus has similar effects on the strength of memory representations. These results add to the evidence for enhancement and suppression as mechanisms of sentence processing and clarify that the effects occur within sentences having a marked focus structure

Orbital dynamics of Cygnus X-3
Orbital-phased-resolved infrared spectra of Cygnus X-3 in outburst and
quiescence, including tomographic analysis, are presented. We confirm the
phasing of broad HeII and NV lines in quiescence, such that maximum blue shift
corresponds to the X-ray minimum at phase = 0.00 +/- 0.04. In outburst,
double-peaked HeI structures show a similar phasing with two significant
differences: (a) although varying in relative strength, there is continuous
line emission in blue and red peaks around the orbit, and (b) an absorption
component, ~1/4 of an orbit out of phase with the emission features, is
discerned. Doppler tomograms of the double-peaked profiles are consistent with
a disk-wind geometry, rotating at velocities of 1000 km/s. Regrettably, the
tomography algorithm will produce a similar ring structure from alternative
line sources if contaminated by overlying P Cygni profiles. This is certainly
the case in the strong 2.0587 micron HeI line, leading to an ambiguous solution
for the nature of double-peaked emission. The absorption feature, detected 1/4
of an orbit out of phase with the emission features, is consistent with an
origin in the He star wind and yields for the first time a plausible radial
velocity curve for the system. We directly derive the mass function of the
system, 0.027 M_sun. If we assume a neutron star accretor and adopt a high
orbital inclination, i > 60 degrees, we obtain a mass range for the He star of
5 M_sun < M_WR < 11 M_sun. Alternatively if the compact object is a black hole,
we estimate M_BH < 10 M_sun. We discuss the implications of these masses for

Hydrocortisone inhibits prostaglandin production but not arachidonic acid release from cultured macrophages
AbstractWe have investigated the action of hydrocortisosone on arachidonic acid mobilisation in cultures of mouse peritoneal macrophages, mouse L929 cells and the mouse macrophage-like cell line RAW264. Hydrocortisone inhibits both arachidonic acid release and prostaglandin production by L929 cells. However, prostaglandin production by macrophages or RAW264 cells is inhibited with a concomitant stimulation rather than inhibition of arachidonic acid release. These data suggest that hydrocortisone acts at the level of phospholipase activity in fibroblasts but at a later stage of prostanoid production in macrophages
Application of OMI Observations to a Space-Based Indicator of NOx and VOC Controls on Surface Ozone Formation
We investigated variations in the relative sensitivity of surface ozone formation in summer to precursor species concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) as inferred from the ratio of the tropospheric columns of formaldehyde to nitrogen dioxide (the "Ratio") from the Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). Our modeling study suggests that ozone formation decreases with reductions in VOCs at Ratios less than 1 and NOx at Ratios greater than 2; both NOx and VOC reductions may decrease ozone formation for Ratios between 1 and 2. Using this criteria. the OMI data indicate that ozone formation became: 1. more sensitive to NOx over most of the United States from 2005 to 2007 because of the substantial decrease in NOx emissions, primarily from stationary sources, and the concomitant decrease in the tropospheric column of NO2. and 2. more sensitive to NOx with increasing temperature, in part because emissions of highly reactive, biogenic isoprene increase with temperature, thus increasing the total VOC reactivity. In cities with relatively low isoprene emissions (e.g .. Chicago). the data clearly indicate that ozone formation became more sensitive to NOx from 2005 to 2007. In cities with relatively high isoprene emissions (e.g ., Atlanta), we found that the increase in the Ratio due to decreasing NOx emissions was not obvious as this signal was convolved with variations in the Ratio associated with the temperature dependence of isoprene emissions and, consequently, the formaldehyde concentration
Measuring Slepton Masses and Mixings at the LHC
Flavor physics may help us understand theories beyond the standard model. In
the context of supersymmetry, if we can measure the masses and mixings of
sleptons and squarks, we may learn something about supersymmetry and
supersymmetry breaking. Here we consider a hybrid gauge-gravity supersymmetric
model in which the observed masses and mixings of the standard model leptons
are explained by a U(1) x U(1) flavor symmetry. In the supersymmetric sector,
the charged sleptons have reasonably large flavor mixings, and the lightest is
metastable. As a result, supersymmetric events are characterized not by missing
energy, but by heavy metastable charged particles. Many supersymmetric events
are therefore fully reconstructible, and we can reconstruct most of the charged
sleptons by working up the long supersymmetric decay chains. We obtain
promising results for both masses and mixings, and conclude that, given a
favorable model, precise measurements at the LHC may help shed light not only

The Two Faces of Anomaly Mediation
Anomaly mediation is a ubiquitous source of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking
which appears in almost every theory of supergravity. In this paper, we show
that anomaly mediation really consists of two physically distinct phenomena,
which we dub "gravitino mediation" and "Kahler mediation". Gravitino mediation
arises from minimally uplifting SUSY anti-de Sitter (AdS) space to Minkowski
space, generating soft masses proportional to the gravitino mass. Kahler
mediation arises when visible sector fields have linear couplings to SUSY
breaking in the Kahler potential, generating soft masses proportional to beta
function coefficients. In the literature, these two phenomena are lumped
together under the name "anomaly mediation", but here we demonstrate that they
can be physically disentangled by measuring associated couplings to the
goldstino. In particular, we use the example of gaugino soft masses to show
that gravitino mediation generates soft masses without corresponding goldstino
couplings. This result naively violates the goldstino equivalence theorem but
is in fact necessary for supercurrent conservation in AdS space. Since
gravitino mediation persists even when the visible sector is sequestered from
SUSY breaking, we can use the absence of goldstino couplings as an unambiguous
