Holistic wild bee management in urban spaces
Projects promoting bees in urban areas are initiated in cities around the world but evidence-based conservation concepts at a city-wide scale are scarce. We developed a holistic approach for assessment of bee and flowering plant diversity in a medium-sized city. In addition to standard mapping approaches in bee hotspots, we initiated citizen science projects for participative urban bee research to be able to collect comprehensive bee data across the entire city. We identified 22 hotspots of bee diversity, analyzed connectivity between those hotspots and evaluated the impact of flower patches planted in collaboration with the municipal gardens department as stepping stones for oligolectic bee species throughout the city. Participation by urban citizens in bee identification trainings was high (c. 630 persons) but their subsequent contribution through observation reports was relatively low (1,165 records by 140 observers). However, we identified a total of 139 bee taxa, seven of them only discovered by citizen scientists. Total species richness was higher in extensively managed orchards than in semi-natural and wasteland areas. Half of the stepping stone flower patches were occupied by the target oligolectic bee species in the year of planting. After 3 years, all but two species could be confirmed. We suggest a 5-step concept for bee management in cities: (1) identification of bee hotspots combined with standardized surveys, especially of rare species; (2) training of citizen scientists at two different levels for comprehensive surveys in all parts of the city: (a) half-day introductions to wild bee diversity, ecology and conservation in order to create more awareness and (b) 2-weeks workshops for in-depth training of a small number of dedicated citizen scientists; (3) extensive management of existing habitats and special conservation programs for very rare species; (4) creation of high-value habitats which take into account the varied resource needs of bees within flight ranges of only a few hundred meters; (5) creation of stepping stone habitats as floral and nesting resources, integrating educative and participative aspects

Hemoglobinopathies including thalassemias are among the most frequent genetic disorders worldwide. Primarily, these entities result from germline variants in the globin gene clusters and their cis-acting regulatory elements, and thus the WHO classifies thalassemias as inherited diseases. Non-inherited disorders of globin chain synthesis mimicking the phenotype of thalassemias have also been described and are referred to as acquired thalassemias. These forms mainly affect the alpha-globin genes and are observed at much lower frequencies..
Conformational Basis for Asymmetric Seeding Barrier in Filaments of Three- and Four-Repeat Tau
*S Supporting Information ABSTRACT: Tau pathology in Alzheimer’s disease is intimately linked to the deposition of proteinacious filaments, which akin to infectious prions, have been proposed to spread via seeded conversion. Here we use double electron−electron resonance (DEER) spectroscopy in combination with extensive computational analysis to show that filaments of three- (3R) and four-repeat (4R) tau are conformationally distinct. Distance measurements between spin labels in the third repeat, reveal tau amyloid filaments as ensembles of known β-strand−turn−β-strand U-turn motifs. Whereas filaments seeded with 3R tau are structurally homogeneous, filaments seeded with 4R tau are heterogeneous, composed of at least three distinct conformers. These findings establish a molecular basis for the seeding barrier between different tau isoforms and offer a new powerful approach for investigating the composition and dynamics of amyloid fibril ensembles
What is at stake in a war? A prospective evaluation of the Ukraine and Russia conflict for business and society
War produces devastating impacts on humankind, especially in terms of lives and livelihoods. While war is a widely studied topic in history, it remains relatively understudied in business. To address this gap, this article explores the impact of war for business and society. To do so, this article undertakes a prospective evaluation of the Ukraine and Russia conflict as a recent case of war. In doing so, this article reveals that a war can impact society within (e.g., limit access to basic necessities and monetary resources, increase unemployment and reduce purchasing power, and increase asylum seekers and refugees) and outside (e.g., supply shortage and inflation and threat of false information) as well as business within(e.g., threat of cyberattacks, threat to digital and sustainable growth, and short-term and long-term sanctions and support) and outside (e.g., test of business ethics and moral obligations and test of brand management) war-torn countries. The article concludes with an agenda for future research involving war, business, and society
Transient Enlargement in Meningiomas Treated with Stereotactic Radiotherapy
To investigate the occurrence of pseudoprogression/transient enlargement in meningiomas after stereotactic radiotherapy (RT) and to evaluate recently proposed volumetric RANO meningioma criteria for response assessment in the context of RT. Sixty-nine meningiomas (benign: 90%, atypical: 10%) received stereotactic RT from January 2005–May 2018. A total of 468 MRI studies were segmented longitudinally during a median follow-up of 42.3 months. Best response and local control were evaluated according to recently proposed volumetric RANO criteria. Transient enlargement was defined as volumetric increase ≥20% followed by a subsequent regression ≥20%. The mean best volumetric response was −23% change from baseline (range, −86% to +19%). According to RANO, the best volumetric response was SD in 81% (56/69), MR in 13% (9/69) and PR in 6% (4/69). Transient enlargement occurred in only 6% (4/69) post RT but would have represented 60% (3/5) of cases with progressive disease if not accounted for. Transient enlargement was characterized by a mean maximum volumetric increase of +181% (range, +24% to +389 %) with all cases occurring in the first year post-RT (range, 4.1–10.3 months). Transient enlargement was significantly more frequent with SRS or hypofractionation than with conventional fractionation (25% vs. 2%, p = 0.015). Five-year volumetric control was 97.8% if transient enlargement was recognized but 92.9% if not accounted for. Transient enlargement/pseudoprogression in the first year following SRS and hypofractionated RT represents an important differential diagnosis, especially because of the high volumetric control achieved with stereotactic RT. Meningioma enlargement during subsequent post-RT follow-up and after conventional fractionation should raise suspicion for tumor progression
