    Awareness of the Red Dress Symbol and Heart Disease among College Women

    The purpose of this study was to determine the level of concern and knowledge about heart disease among college women and to explore the relationship between awareness of the Red Dress symbol and knowledge of risk factors for heart disease. Female college students (n = 475) completed a survey. While 63% believed they are informed about heart disease, only 43% identified heart disease as the leading cause of death in women. Breast cancer (36%) was listed as the one greatest health concern facing women, followed by heart disease (29%). Chi-square analysis revealed that a significantly greater proportion of participants familiar with the Red Dress symbol (n = 157) identified heart disease as the greatest health problem facing women and the leading cause of death of women than participants unfamiliar with the symbol (n = 318). Participants familiar with the symbol identified 0.4-0.5 more correct choices on two questions related to causes of and activities to prevent heart disease than women unfamiliar with the symbol. College women are a prime target for a Red Dress campaign due to their low level of awareness. Young women can reduce their risk of developing heart disease through prevention

    HDAC2 attenuates TRAIL-induced apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most malignant tumors with a dismal prognosis and no effective conservative therapeutic strategies. Although it is demonstrated that histone deacetylases (HDACs), especially the class I HDACs HDAC1, 2 and 3 are highly expressed in this disease, little is known about HDAC isoenzyme specific functions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Depletion of HDAC2, but not HDAC1, in the pancreatic cancer cell lines MiaPaCa2 and Panc1 resulted in a marked sensitization towards the tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL). Correspondingly, the more class I selective HDAC inhibitor (HDACI) valproic acid (VPA) synergized with TRAIL to induce apoptosis of MiaPaCa2 and Panc1 cells. At the molecular level, an increased expression of the TRAIL receptor 1 (DR5), accelerated processing of caspase 8, pronounced cleavage of the BH3-only protein Bid, and increased effector caspase activation was observed in HDAC2-depleted and TRAIL-treated MiaPaCa2 cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data characterize a novel HDAC2 function in PDAC cells and point to a strategy to overcome TRAIL resistance of PDAC cells, a prerequisite to succeed with a TRAIL targeted therapy in clinical settings.</p

    Project Reach: Implementation of Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Within Integrated Healthcare for Hurricane Harvey Affected Individuals

    Project Reach was established to deliver evidence-based mental healthcare services to children and adults affected by Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. Through Project Reach, an innovative multi-component assessment and treatment service is utilized to identify and treat in integrated healthcare settings both children and adults exhibiting significant behavioral health concerns in Houston. The aim is to provide sustainable, integrated mental health services through primary care and school-based settings to post-Harvey affected individuals whose emotional needs remain unmet. This paper describes the design and implementation of Project Reach as well as special considerations for implementation. The overall goal of Project Reach is to form a platform for expanding integrated services for those affected by Harvey that will maximize behavioral health outcomes while reducing cost and improving access

    What are realistic expectations to become free of overactive bladder symptoms? Experience from non-interventional studies with propiverine

    Plain Language Summary Unmet expectations are a major reason why patients with overactive bladder syndrome discontinue treatment. To enable evidence-based counselling of patients on realistic expectations, we have determined the chance that patients with overactive bladder become free of urgency, incontinence, voiding frequency, and nocturia. Two non-interventional studies included 1335 and 745 patients, respectively, who received 30 or 45 mg q.d. propiverine ER for 12 weeks. Analyses were also performed in subgroups defined by basal symptom severity, age, and gender. The probability of becoming symptom-free was largest for incontinence and voiding frequency (about 50%), but lesser for urgency and nocturia (about 20%). Greater basal severity of a symptom reduced the chance to become free of that symptom upon treatment, but the chance to become free of incontinence and frequency was still considerable. Age and gender had only minor if any effects on the chance of becoming symptom-free. These data provide an evidence base for the counselling of patients with overactive bladder on realistic expectations of treatment outcomes. They were monitored for becoming free of urgency, urinary incontinence, frequency, or nocturia. Analyses were also performed in subgroups defined by basal symptom severity, age, and gender. Categorical data are shown as a percentage of the respective population. Continuous data are expressed as means or as median depending on whether the variability was considered to exhibit a normal distribution. Results The probability of becoming symptom-free was largest for incontinence and frequency (about 50%), but lesser for urgency (about 20%) and nocturia (about 10%). Greater basal severity of a symptom reduced the chance to become free of that symptom upon treatment, but the chance to become free of incontinence and frequency was still considerable. Age and gender had only minor if any effects on the chance of becoming symptom-free. These findings are in line with those of a limited number of randomized controlled trials. Conclusion These data provide an evidence base for the counselling of patients with overactive bladder on realistic expectations of treatment outcomes.     Micro-mechanical testing of transition metal (oxy)nitride coatings

    Transition metal (oxy)nitride coatings are used in polymer forming operations for a combination of outstanding wear resistance and chemical compatibility with the polymer materials. Varying the chemical composition and deposition parameters for the coatings will optimise mechanical properties by a combination of chemistry and microstructural optimisation. By developing a representative model for these materials, these materials can be rapidly and efficiently prototyped and improved. However, as both chemistry and microstructure play a role in the material properties, both of these variables must be taken account of in this model. This work demonstrates the first steps in linking quantum-mechanics, micro-mechanics, and meso-scale finite element models together in order to fully understand the behaviour of these coatings.     MEK inhibition is a promising therapeutic strategy for MLL-rearranged infant acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients carrying RAS mutations

    Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in infants is an aggressive malignancy with a poor clinical outcome, and is characterized by translocations of the Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL) gene. Previously, we identified RAS mutations in 14-24% of infant ALL patients, and showed that the presence of a RAS mutation decreased the survival chances even further. We hypothesized that targeting the RAS signaling pathway could be a therapeutic strategy for RAS-mutant infant ALL patients. Here we show that the MEK inhibitors Trametinib, Selumetinib and MEK162 severely impair primary RAS-mutant MLL-rearranged infant ALL cells in vitro. While all RAS-mutant samples were sensitive to MEK inhibitors, we found both sensitive and resistant samples among RAS-wildtype cases. We confirmed enhanced RAS pathway signaling in RASmutant samples, but found no apparent downstream over-activation in the wildtype samples. However, we did confirm that MEK inhibitors reduced p-ERK levels, and induced apoptosis in the RAS-mutant MLL-rearranged ALL cells.
