The Power of the Exchange Rate: A Study of the Role of Exchange Rates in Economic Growth and Crisis Recovery in Denmark, Sweden and Finland 1985-2013

    Get PDF
Financial crises are recurring phenomena and studying how economic parameters affect outcome and recovery processes will most likely remain an area of intense research also in the years to come. The scope of this paper circulates around the causes and effects of two crises in the period 1985-2013 and their separate effects on the economies of Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Moreover, the main variable in focus is the exchange rate. Implications of different choices of exchange rate regime will be explored in detail. The research combines a theoretical study with simple econometrics in order to try to find support for some sort of causation or correlation between the choice of exchange rate regime and economic growth

Life Trajectories of female child abuse survivors thriving in adulthood

A narrative study of thriving adult female survivors of childhood maltreatment was undertaken to discover how they had achieved success. Life trajectory patterns, turning points, and setbacks were identified. Data consisted of 81 interview transcripts derived from a series of three interviews, spaced over 6 to 12 months, with 27 survivors. The childhood abuse was intrafamilial, beginning as early as infancy and continuing, in most cases, until participants left home. The onset and pace of the healing trajectory were quite variable, including a roller-coaster pattern as well as patterns of slow, steady progress and continued struggle. Four types of redemption narratives were delineated. Survivors had not been spared depression but had made achievements in work and education and displayed remarkable generativity, parenting their own children well, and mentoring other young girls, especially victims of abuse

A health promotion curriculum for community health workers

    Get PDF
The theme of the 77th annual Canadian Public Health Conference, "Health Promotion: Strategies for Action", reflects consideration of a changing mandate for public health. To address the trend away from prevention to health promotion, the New Westminster Seniors Bureau and the Keep Well Project (B.C. Ministry of Health), with funding from Canada Employment and Immigration, have developed a health promotion curriculum for community health workers. The curriculum is a framework for teaching a post-basic course in health promotion to healthcare professionals and community service workers preparing to develop and coordinate community programs for seniors. The purpose of this paper is to outline the development and the content of the curriculum. The development of the curriculum follows a 4-step process: 1. needs assessment; 2. program planning; 3. Implementation; and 4. evaluation and recommendations. The curriculum which was produced includes objectives, issues, and a current bibliography relative to ten content areas and was piloted as a series of ten workshops held at Douglas College in the Spring of 1986

The CoNLL 2007 shared task on dependency parsing

    Get PDF
The Conference on Computational Natural Language Learning features a shared task, in which participants train and test their learning systems on the same data sets. In 2007, as in 2006, the shared task has been devoted to dependency parsing, this year with both a multilingual track and a domain adaptation track. In this paper, we define the tasks of the different tracks and describe how the data sets were created from existing treebanks for ten languages. In addition, we characterize the different approaches of the participating systems, report the test results, and provide a first analysis of these results

The implementation of chlamydia screening: a cross-sectional study in the south east of England

    Get PDF
Background England's National Chlamydia Screening Programme (NCSP) provides opportunistic testing for under 25 year-olds in healthcare and non-healthcare settings. The authors aimed to explore relationships between coverage and positivity in relation to demographic characteristics or setting, in order to inform efficient and sustainable implementation of the NCSP. Methods The authors analysed mapped NCSP testing data from the South East region of England between April 2006 and March 2007 inclusive to population characteristics. Coverage was estimated by sex, demographic characteristics and service characteristics, and variation in positivity by setting and population group. Results Coverage in females was lower in the least deprived areas compared with the most deprived areas (OR 0.48; 95% CI 0.45 to 0.50). Testing rates were lower in 20 1324-year-olds compared with 15 1319-year-olds (OR 0.69; 95% CI 0.67 to 0.72 for females and OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.64 to 0.71 for males), but positivity was higher in older males. Females were tested most often in healthcare services, which also identified the most positives. The greatest proportions of male tests were in university (27%) and military (19%) settings which only identified a total of 11% and 13% of total male positives respectively. More chlamydia-positive males were identified through healthcare services despite fewer numbers of tests. Conclusions Testing of males focused on institutional settings where there is a low yield of positives, and limited capacity for expansion. By contrast, the testing of females, especially in urban environments, was mainly through established healthcare services. Future strategies should prioritise increasing male testing in healthcare settings

Longitudinal Study of a State 4-H Fashion Revue

The 4-H fashion revue contest gives young people the opportunity to create their own garment and present it in front of judges and an audience. To come to the conclusions reported here, the participant entry forms, participant evaluations, and judges’ comments representing seven years (2006-2013) of state fashion revue participation in Pennsylvania were analyzed. No differences were found in cost or time allocation among those who placed as award winners and those who did not place. Data and participant comments indicated that participants gained some life skills. In addition, more than one-third of the youth involved in these contests were found to mend for their family and friends as part of their 4-H textile and clothing experiences

Post-transcriptional regulation of satellite cell quiescence by TTP-mediated mRNA decay.

Skeletal muscle satellite cells in their niche are quiescent and upon muscle injury, exit quiescence, proliferate to repair muscle tissue, and self-renew to replenish the satellite cell population. To understand the mechanisms involved in maintaining satellite cell quiescence, we identified gene transcripts that were differentially expressed during satellite cell activation following muscle injury. Transcripts encoding RNA binding proteins were among the most significantly changed and included the mRNA decay factor Tristetraprolin. Tristetraprolin promotes the decay of MyoD mRNA, which encodes a transcriptional regulator of myogenic commitment, via binding to the MyoD mRNA 3' untranslated region. Upon satellite cell activation, p38α/β MAPK phosphorylates MAPKAP2 and inactivates Tristetraprolin, stabilizing MyoD mRNA. Satellite cell specific knockdown of Tristetraprolin precociously activates satellite cells in vivo, enabling MyoD accumulation, differentiation and cell fusion into myofibers. Regulation of mRNAs by Tristetraprolin appears to function as one of several critical post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms controlling satellite cell homeostasis
