    Investigating prenatal perceived support as protective factor against adverse birth outcomes: a community cohort study.

    Studies show that prenatal maternal anxiety may act as a risk factor for adverse birth outcomes, whilst prenatal social support may rather act as a protective factor. However, studies examining prenatal anxiety symptoms, prenatal perceived support, and neonatal and/or obstetric outcomes are lacking. This study investigated whether, in a community sample, prenatal perceived support: (1) had a protective influence on birth outcomes (gestational age (GA), birthweight (BW), 5-minute Apgar score, and mode of delivery); (2) acted as a protective factor, moderating the relationship between anxiety symptoms and the aforementioned birth outcomes. During their third trimester of pregnancy, 182 nulliparous child-bearers completed standardized questionnaires of anxiety (HADS-A) and perceived support (MOS-SSS). Birth outcomes data was extracted from medical records. (1) Perceived support did not significantly predict any birth outcomes. However, perceived tangible support - MOS-SSS subscale assessing perceived material/financial aid - significantly positively predicted the 5-minute Apgar score. (2) Perceived support did not significantly moderate the relationship between anxiety symptoms and birth outcomes. However, perceived tangible support significantly moderated the relationship between anxiety symptoms and the 5-minute Apgar score. When experienced within non-clinical thresholds, prenatal anxiety symptoms do not increase the risk of adverse neonatal and obstetric outcomes when perceived support is present

    Integrated hydrological modelling of a managed coastal Mediterranean wetland (Rhone delta, France): initial calibration

    This paper presents a model of a heavily managed coastal Mediterranean wetland. The hydrosystem studied , called ``Ile de Camargue', is the central part of the Rhone river delta. It comprises flat agricultural drainage basins, marshes, and shallow brackish lagoons whose connection to the sea is managed. This hydrosystem is subject to strong natural hydrological variability due to the combination of a Mediterranean climate and the artificial hydrological regime imposed by flooded rice cultivation. To quantify the hydrological balance at different spatial and temporal scales, a simplified model is developed — including the basin and the lagoons — using a time step that enables the temporal dynamic to be reproduced that is adapted to data availability. This modelling task takes into account the functioning of the natural and anthropogenic components of the hydrosystem. A conceptual approach is used for modelling drainage from the catchment, using a GIS to estimate water input for rice irrigation. The lagoon system is modelled using a two-dimensional finite element hydrodynamic model. Simulated results from the hydrodynamic model run under various hydro-climatic forcing conditions (water level, wind speed and direction, sea connection) are used to calculate hydraulic exchanges between lagoon sub units considered as boxes. Finally, the HIC ('Hydrologie de l’Ile de Camargue') conceptual model is applied to simulate the water inputs and exchanges between the different units, together with the salt balance in the hydrosystem during a calibration period.</p> <p style='line-height: 20px;'><b>Keywords: </b>water management,conceptual hydrological model, hydrodynamic model, box model, GIS, Rhone delta, Camargue

    Maternal Mental Health Symptom Profiles and Infant Sleep: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

    The distinct influence of different, but comorbid, maternal mental health (MMH) difficulties (postpartum depression, anxiety, childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder) on infant sleep is unknown, although associations between MMH and infant sleep were reported. This cross-sectional survey aimed: (1) to examine associations between MMH symptoms and infant sleep; (2) to extract data-driven maternal MMH symptom profiles from MMH symptoms; and (3) to investigate the distinct influence of these MMH symptom profiles on infant sleep when including mediators and moderators. Mothers of 3-12-month-old infants (n = 410) completed standardized questionnaires on infant sleep, maternal perception of infant negative emotionality, and MMH symptoms. Data was analyzed using: (1) simple linear regressions; (2) factor analysis; and (3) structural equation modelling. MMH symptoms were all negatively associated with nocturnal sleep duration and only postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms were associated with night waking. Three MMH symptom profiles were extracted: depressive, anxious, and birth trauma profiles. Maternal perception of infant negative emotionality mediated the associations between the depressive or anxious profiles and infant sleep but only for particular infant ages or maternal education levels. The birth trauma profile was not associated with infant sleep. The relationships between MMH and infant sleep may involve distinct mechanisms contingent on maternal symptomatology

    Prospective Associations Between Maternal Depression and Infant Sleep in Women With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

    Women with gestational diabetes mellitus have higher rates of perinatal depressive symptoms, compared to healthy pregnant women. In the general population, maternal depressive symptoms have been associated with infant sleep difficulties during the first year postpartum. However, there is lack of data on infants of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus. This study assessed the prospective associations between maternal perinatal depressive symptoms and infant sleep outcomes. The study population consisted of 95 Swiss women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their infants, enrolled in the control group of the MySweetheart trial (NCT02890693). Perinatal depressive symptoms were assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at the first gestational diabetes mellitus visit during pregnancy, at 6-8 weeks postpartum, and 1 year postpartum. The Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire was used to assess infant sleep (i.e., nocturnal sleep duration, number of night waking, and maternal perception of infant sleep) at 1 year postpartum. Relevant maternal and infant measurements (e.g., infant sex or maternal age or social support) were collected or extracted from medical records as covariates. Antenatal maternal depressive symptoms at the first gestational diabetes mellitus visit were inversely associated with infant nocturnal sleep duration at 1 year postpartum (β = -5.9, p = 0.046). This association became marginally significant when covariates were added (β = -5.3, p = 0.057). Maternal depressive symptoms at 6-8 weeks postpartum were negatively and prospectively associated with infant nocturnal sleep duration (β = -9.35, p = 0.016), even when controlling for covariates (β = -7.32, p = 0.042). The association between maternal depressive symptoms and maternal perception of infant sleep as not a problem at all was significant at 1 year postpartum (β = -0.05, p = 0.006), although it became non-significant when controlling for appropriate covariates. No other significant associations were found. This study solely included measures derived from self-report validated questionnaires. Our findings suggest it is of utmost importance to support women with gestational diabetes mellitus as a means to reduce the detrimental impact of maternal perinatal depressive symptoms on infant sleep, given its predictive role on infant metabolic health

    Measurement and conceptualization of maternal PTSD following childbirth: Psychometric properties of the City Birth Trauma Scale-French Version (City BiTS-F).

    The City Birth Trauma Scale (City BiTS) assesses posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms following childbirth (PTSD-FC). Recent studies investigating the latent factor structure of PTSD-FC in women reported mixed results. No validated French questionnaire exists to measure PTSD-FC symptoms. Therefore, this study first aimed to validate the French version of the City BiTS (City BiTS-F). Second, it aimed to establish the latent factor structure of PTSD-FC. French-speaking women with infants aged 1 to 12 months old (n = 541) completed an online cross-sectional survey. Questionnaires included the City BiTS-F, the PTSD Checklist, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Additionally, sociodemographic and medical data were collected. The two-factor model with birth-related symptoms (BRS) and general symptoms (GS) fit the data well, whereas the four-factor model was not confirmed. The bifactor model with a general factor and the BRS and GS gave the best fit to the data, suggesting that use of the total score in addition to the BRS and GS subscales scores is justified. High reliability (α = .88 to .90) and good convergent and divergent validity were obtained. Discriminant validity was calculated with weeks of gestation, gravidity, history of traumatic childbirth and event, and mode of delivery. The City BiTS-F is a reliable and valid measure of PTSD-FC symptoms in French-speaking women. Both total score and BRS or GS subscale scores can be calculated.     A Fluorescent Kinase Inhibitor that Exhibits Diagnostic Changes in Emission upon Binding

    The development of a fluorescent LCK inhibitor that exhibits favourable solvatochromic properties upon binding the kinase is described. Fluorescent properties were realised through the inclusion of a prodan-derived fluorophore into the pharmacophore of an ATP-competitive kinase inhibitor. Fluorescence titration experiments demonstrate the solvatochromic properties of the inhibitor, in which dramatic increase in emission intensity and hypsochromic shift in emission maxima are clearly observed upon binding LCK. Microscopy experiments in cellular contexts together with flow cytometry show that the fluorescence intensity of the inhibitor correlates with the LCK concentration. Furthermore, multiphoton microscopy experiments demonstrate both the rapid cellular uptake of the inhibitor and that the two-photon cross section of the inhibitor is amenable for excitation at 700 nm

    In order to understand the role of foraging habitat quality on fecundity parameters we measured habitat use, breeding parameters, and body condition of chicks in six colonies of Little Egrets in southern France. The foraging habitat available differed between colonies; it was mainly natural marshes around the Carrelet colony, agricultural lands (rice fields and dry crops) around the Agon colony, a mix of agricultural and natural lands around the Redon and Fiélouse colonies, a mix of natural and urbanised/industrial lands around the Palissade colony, and mainly cultivated and urbanised lands around the Chaumont colony. The habitat attractiveness to adult Little Egret breeding was higher for natural marshes than for other habitat types. Agricultural marshes (rice fields) came next. Other human–made habitats came last. Clutch size and body condition index of chicks did not differ between colonies. Brood size was influenced by both the association of the proportion of natural marshes in the foraging area and clutch size, and the association of clutch size and the total number of heron pairs in the colony. The effect of the proportion of natural marshes could not be distinguished from the effects of the colony size. The potential influence of other parameters not taken into account in this study is discussed.Con la finalidad de conocer el papel que ejerce la calidad del hábitat alimentario sobre los parámetros de fecundidad, se evaluaron el uso del hábitat, los parámetros reproductivos y las condiciones físicas de los polluelos de seis colonias de garceta común en el sur de Francia. El hábitat alimentario disponible variaba de unas colonias a otras, siendo principalmente marismas naturales en el entorno de la colonia de Carrelet, terrenos agrícolas (campos de arroz y cultivos de secano) alrededor de la colonia de Agon, una combinación de terrenos agrícolas y naturales alrededor de las colonias de Redon y Fiélouse, una combinación de terrenos naturales y urbanizados/industriales alrededor de la colonia de Palissade, y principalmente terrenos cultivados y urbanizados alrededor de la colonia de Chaumont. En la época de reproducción, los adultos de garceta común se sienten atraídos principalmente por las marismas naturales, en detrimento de otros tipos de hábitat. Las tierras agrícolas anegadas (campos de arroz) siguen en orden de preferencia, mientras los hábitats construidos por el hombre ocupan el último lugar. El tamaño de la puesta y el índice de estado físico de los polluelos no mostraron diferencias entre las colonias. El tamaño de la nidada estuvo influenciado tanto por la asociación de la proporción de marismas naturales en el hábitat alimentario y el tamaño de la puesta, como por la asociación del tamaño de la puesta y el número total de parejas de garzas de la colonia. El efecto de la proporción de marismas naturales no se puede diferenciar del ejercido por el tamaño de la colonia. Se discute también la influencia potencial de otros parámetros que no se han tenido en cuenta en este estudio

    Vision is a convenient tool for position measurements. In this paper, we present several applications in which a reference pattern can be defined on the target for a priori knowledge of image features and further optimization by software. Selecting pseudoperiodic patterns leads to high resolution in absolute phase measurements. This method is adapted to position encoding of live cell culture boxes. Our goal is to capture each biological image along with its absolute highly accurate position regarding the culture box itself. Thus, it becomes straightforward to find again an already observed region of interest when a culture box is brought back to the microscope stage from the cell incubator where it was temporarily placed for cell culture. In order to evaluate the performance of this method, we tested it during a wound healing assay of human liver tumor-derived cells. In this case, the procedure enabled more accurate measurements of the wound healing rate than the usual method. It was also applied to the characterization of the in-plane vibration amplitude from a tapered probe of a shear force microscope. The amplitude was interpolated by a quartz tuning fork with an attached pseudo-periodic pattern. Nanometer vibration amplitude resolution is achieved by processing the pattern images. Such pictures were recorded by using a common 20x magnification lens.La visión es una herramienta conveniente para mediciones de posición. En este artículo, presentamos aplicaciones en las que un patrón de referencia puede ser adherido al objeto de interés. Ésto permite tener un conocimiento a priori de las características de la imagen y así poder optimizar el software. Como patrón de referencia se usan patrones pseudo-periódicos, los cuales permiten una alta resolución en las mediciones de fase absoluta. El método es adaptado para codificar la posición de soportes de cultivos celulares, con el fin de documentar cada imagen biológica registrada con su posición absoluta. Por lo tanto, resulta sencillo encontrar de nuevo una región de interés, observada previamente, cuando una caja de cultivo es traída de nuevo al microscopio luego de estar en una incubadora. Para evaluar el método, éste se utilizó durante un ensayo de “cicatrización de herida” de un cultivo celular derivado de tumores hepáticos. En este caso, el método permite obtener mediciones más precisas de la tasa de “cicatrización”, comparado a los resultados obtenidos con el método usual. El método propuesto también se aplica a la caracterización de la amplitud de vibración en el plano de una sonda de un microscopio de fuerza atómica. La amplitud fue interpolada por medio de un diapasón de cuarzo al cual se la adhirió un patrón pseudo-periódico. A partir del procesamiento de las imágenes del patrón, se logra obtener resolución nanométrica en la medida de la amplitud de la vibración. Estas imágenes fueron obtenidas con un microscopio óptico con magnificación 20x
