    Get PDF
Amongst the Artistocracy and Underclass: The Lives of Black People and Attitudes to Race in Eighteenth Century Britain

    Get PDF
This chapter explores the lives of Black people in the eighteenth century and how attitudes towards race shaped the conditions in which they existed. Trade links meant that the majority of Blacks were employed as servants or slaves to the upper classes or were concentrated in urban slums trying to make a living for themselves amongst the poorest of the poor. Life on two opposite ends of the spectrum meant that the circumstances in which Black people lived were marked either by comfortable servitude or excluded poverty. Black people, whether treasured pet or destitute vagabond, were unified by a struggle for self-actualisation and rights; living within a society which they were prevented from being part of. These seemingly disparate lifestyles were shaped by a set of common attitudes within Britain during the eighteenth century. For the purpose of this chapter the term Black relates to people of African descent, either directly from Africa or the colonies. After setting the historical context the study explores the lives of Black people who lived amongst the aristocracy. The next section examines evidence relating to Black people amongst the underclass. Then the chapter explores eighteenth century attitudes to race and how these shaped the experiences of Black people at the time

Maturation behavior of Maxi Gala grafetd on two rootstocks by no Destructive Method.

    Get PDF
The evaluation of the maturation in apple orchards is checked using destructive methods, sampling fruits and analyzing them in the laboratory, making the process slow and expensive. The use of not destructive method to determine fruit maturation in the orchard could accelerate delivery of results and help in determining harvest time, because non-destructive data would allow to verify the maturation on different blocks in the orchard. The aim of this work was to chart fruit maturation in 'Maxi Gala' grafted on two different rootstocks, using destructive and not destructive methods. The non-destructive method used was the portable DA-Meter. The trial was realized at Vacaria, southern Brazillocated 28,44 S and 50,85 W. The samples were harvested on two orchards during the seasons 2014/15 and 2015/16, during six weeks before harvest from January until the second week of February. The sampling was realized in five different points of the orchard, on rootstocks M.9 or Marubakaido with M.9 interstem. Ten-apple samples were collected weekly in each point in the orchard and then evaluated by destructive method (flesh firmness, starch degradation, total soluble solids and acidity) and the not destructive method (DA-Meter). For both seasons, the evolution of the fruit maturation of Maxi Gala showed a similar progression for both rootstocks. The non-destructive method correlated well with the traditional destructive methods, making it a tool for more practical and easy determination of the harvest date

Purificação e utilização do heterodímero PSP-I/PSP-II como marcador de congelabilidade do sêmen suíno

    Get PDF

Early California Reconsidered: Mexicans, Anglos, and Indians at Mission San Jose

    No full text
David Weber was the leading scholar of the Spanish Borderlands in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. Just before his death in 2010, Weber shared a rare interrogation he found in Mexico’s major archive with us. It concerned Jedediah Smith’s California incursion into the Central San Joaquín Valley in 1827–1828. Using digitized databases of Franciscan registers from Mission San José and Mission Santa Clara, we have decoded the interrogation and identified all the Indians questioned, as well as those mentioned in the document, by tribal origin and language affiliation. By lifting the veil of Indian anonymity, we were able to better understand the motivation behind each testimony allowing us to offer, for the first time in the literature, a look at the impact of Jedediah Smith’s expedition from an Indian perspective. Indian interaction (both tribal and Mission) with Mexican and American imperialism is central to understanding Smith’s disruptive impact in California
