    Managing Access to Biobanks:How Can We Reconcile Privacy and Public Interests in Genetic Research?

    This article is concerned with the ultimate objectives of genetic biobanks set up to promote the public interest—being the sharing of samples and data for medical research—and the consequences for personal privacy of realising them. Our aim is to chart the values, interests and principles in play, to consider the challenges of realizing biobanking objectives on a global scale, and to propose viable ways forward that ensure, as far as possible, that access provisions remain fit for purpose throughout the entire life of a biobank, while adequately protecting the privacy interests at stake. It is argued that key features in any robust access model must include mechanisms to (a) maintain participant trust in management of the resource and to measure and respond to participants’ expectations, (b) facilitate and promote the sharing of benefits, and (c) respond timeously and effectively to new challenges

    We perform dynamical QCD simulations with nf=2n_f=2 overlap fermions by hybrid Monte-Carlo method on 646^4 to 83×168^3\times 16 lattices. We study the problem of topological sector changing. A new method is proposed which works without topological sector changes. We use this new method to determine the topological susceptibility at various quark masses.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    The equation of state in lattice QCD: with physical quark masses towards the continuum limit

    The equation of state of QCD at vanishing chemical potential as a function of temperature is determined for two sets of lattice spacings. Coarser lattices with temporal extension of N_t=4 and finer lattices of N_t=6 are used. Symanzik improved gauge and stout-link improved staggered fermionic actions are applied. The results are given for physical quark masses both for the light quarks and for the strange quark. Pressure, energy density, entropy density, quark number susceptibilities and the speed of sound are presented.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. By identifying and pursuing a sustainable development pathway now, they are better positioned to reach their economic growth goals while addressing climate change impacts and lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Low emission development strategies - development plans that promote sustainable social and economic development while reducing long-term GHG emissions - provide a pathway to preparing for a global low emission future.     Gaze and viewing angle influence visual stabilization of upright posture

    Focusing gaze on a target helps stabilize upright posture. We investigated how this visual stabilization can be affected by observing a target presented under different gaze and viewing angles. In a series of 10-second trials, participants (N = 20, 29.3 ± 9 years of age) stood on a force plate and fixed their gaze on a figure presented on a screen at a distance of 1 m. The figure changed position (gaze angle: eye level (0°), 25° up or down), vertical body orientation (viewing angle: at eye level but rotated 25° as if leaning toward or away from the participant), or both (gaze and viewing angle: 25° up or down with the rotation equivalent of a natural visual perspective). Amplitude of participants’ sagittal displacement, surface area, and angular position of the center of gravity (COG) were compared. Results showed decreased COG velocity and amplitude for up and down gaze angles. Changes in viewing angles resulted in altered body alignment and increased amplitude of COG displacement. No significant changes in postural stability were observed when both gaze and viewing angles were altered. Results suggest that both the gaze angle and viewing perspective may be essential variables of the visuomotor system modulating postural responses

    Lattice determination of the critical point of QCD at finite T and \mu

    Based on universal arguments it is believed that there is a critical point (E) in QCD on the temperature (T) versus chemical potential (\mu) plane, which is of extreme importance for heavy-ion experiments. Using finite size scaling and a recently proposed lattice method to study QCD at finite \mu we determine the location of E in QCD with n_f=2+1 dynamical staggered quarks with semi-realistic masses on Lt=4L_t=4 lattices. Our result is T_E=160 \pm 3.5 MeV and \mu_E= 725 \pm 35 MeV. For the critical temperature at \mu=0 we obtained T_c=172 \pm 3 MeV.Comment: misprints corrected, version to appear in JHE
