    Portable Gamma Spectrometry Surveys of Sites in Portugal in Support of the VADOSE Project

    The VADOSE project involves the use of multiple techniques to evaluate dose rate variability on different spatial scales. Several sites in central northern Portugal, mostly in the vicinity of Aveiro, have been investigated. As part of this investigation, portable gamma spectrometry techniques were used to map areas of approximately 100x100m around each sampling location. The SUERC portable gamma spectrometry system used consists of a 3x3” NaI(Tl) spectrometer with integral GPS receiver. Measurements were conducted with 10s integration time. Maps of the dose rate variability in each area were generated in the field, and used to confirm data quality and coverage and identify any remaining locations that would benefit from further measurements prior to leaving the site. Maps of natural radionuclide distribution (40K, 214Bi from the 238U decay series, and 208Tl from the 232Th decay series) were produced after the conclusion of measurements each day. Natural radionuclide specific activities (Bq kg-1 ) were estimated using a spectral windows method with stripping1 , using a working calibration assuming planar geometry and uniform activity distribution. As agreed prior to the start of work, a working calibration derived from field measurements and photon fluence calculations conducted for similar detectors in the 1990s2 has been used here, with calibration parameters given in the appendix. This report presents the dose rate maps produced during the field work, with a very brief description of the data. Summary statistics for each data set are presented in Table 1. All data have been mapped using a UTM (zone 29T) grid, with the approximate location of ground features added by hand as a guide. Further work could be conducted to produce more accurate overlays of ground features. At each site in-situ gamma spectrometry measurements were also conducted by ITN, and the data collected by the two detector systems and the soil samples will be compared at a later date

    <p>Environmental radioactivity arises from natural and anthropogenic sources: 238U, 232Th and their decay products, and 40K in differing concentrations in rocks and soils; natural materials transformed by industrial processes to enhance the concentrations of some radioactive isotopes; materials discharged from some nuclear processes; fallout from nuclear accidents and weapons testing; radioactive sources that may have been lost or stolen; and radiation shine from sites using nuclear technology. Mobile gamma spectrometry provides powerful methods of measuring the distribution of radioactivity in the environment; airborne platforms allow the rapid survey of large areas, and ground based platforms more detailed surveys of smaller areas.</p> <p>Airborne surveys in 1990 (conducted to produce a baseline data set for the Sellafield site) and 2000 (as part of a large study on spatial and temporal aspects of airborne measurements) showed several radiometric features along the coast, including elevated 137Cs activity along a beach in West Cumbria between St Bees and Nethertown, in an environment comprising pebbles and gravel where this was unexpected. An additional short survey of this area was conducted during the 2000 survey, at reduced ground clearance and speed, to verify the existence of these unexpected signals. With increased interest in the search and recovery of particulate activity from the beaches in the vicinity of Sellafield, this data was reviewed in 2008 to illustrate the use of airborne methods in locating potential particulate activity on beaches and to aid in the planning of further ground based investigations. SUERC conducted an exploratory ground based survey in June 2010; to investigate whether the features observed in the airborne surveys were still present, to define the spatial distribution of activity more precisely, and to attempt to assess the form of the activity and whether it had been redistributed since 2000. This report presents the 2000 airborne measurements reviewed in 2008, with the results of the June 2010 survey.</p> <p>A portable gamma spectrometry system has been developed at SUERC. This consists of a 3x3” NaI(Tl) detector with digital spectrometer, a GPS receiver and netbook computer. The system is lightweight, easy to use and can be carried over terrain that would be inaccessible to vehicular systems. By holding the detector close to the ground the extent of any observed enhanced activity feature can be determined more precisely. Two of these systems have been field tested on the 22-23rd June 2010 along this beach.</p> <p>The exploratory survey has clearly demonstrated the utility of the SUERC backpack system in producing detailed maps of the distribution of radioactive materials in the environment. A survey using two systems successfully mapped an area of approximately 50x200m with very high density measurements in a period of approximately 2h.</p> <p>It has shown that the enhanced 137Cs activity is still present on the beach, in locations that are consistent with the earlier airborne measurements. The more detailed survey shows a pattern of patches of enhanced 137Cs activity. Samples collected from some of these had concentrations of 50 Bq kg-1, which would account for the observed 137Cs count rate. The nature of the material that carries this activity is at present unknown.</p&gt

    Using Optically Stimulated Luminescence to Unravel Sedimentary Processes of the Usumacinta and Grijalva Rivers (SE Mexico)

    This report provides an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) chronology for sediment collected through terrace deposits of the Usumacinta and Grijalva rivers in SE Mexico. The Grijalva and Usumacinta rivers are susceptible to flooding during the hurricane season (between May and November), affecting the population of the state of Tabasco, and leaving many households at a flood risk. The present study was initiated to obtain an understanding of the sediment processes, rates and frequency of flood events in the past. The report summaries the initial luminescence profiling, using a SUERC PPSL system, and laboratory analysis, used to characterise the stratigraphy and interpret sedimentary processes in each profile, together with the quantitative quartz SAR dating used to define chronologies in each. Initial luminescence profiling revealed that the stratigraphy in each was complex, reflecting multiple cycles of deposition, with maxima, followed by a tail to lower intensities, possibly indicating deposition during extreme flood events, followed by a period in which the sediment was mixed and the luminescence signals reset. The laboratory profiling reproduced the apparent maxima/trends in the field profiling dataset. In the Grijalva section, the profiling samples encompass the full range of variations in the IRSL net signal intensities, re-affirming the complex stratigraphy. In the Usumacinta section, the profiling samples were positioned on the trend of a normal age-depth progression, which may indicate that the horizons sampled are well suited for quartz SAR dating. Given the nature of the sediment sampled, it is unsurprising that the equivalent dose distributions obtained for each of the dating samples showed considerable scatter, leading to some ambiguity in estimating a stored dose for age calculations. In each, a number of aliquots returned high equivalent dose values, implying residual luminescence signals (leading to higher apparent ages), and others, low values, implying re-setting of the luminescence signals in the modern environment. It is well recognised that fluvial sediment of this sort can enclose mixed-age populations. It has been argued elsewhere (Fuchs and Lang, 2001; Lepper et al., 2000; Olley et al., 1998; Olley et al., 1999) that the lowest population of dose(s) may best represent the burial dose of the youngest depositional component, and that an arbitrary value of say the lowest 5% be used in age calculations. However, if this method was instigated for the Mexican samples, it would include the low equivalent dose values thought to reflect contamination from the surface, by bioturbation or some other weathering process, leading to artificially young ages. Therefore, each sample was evaluated on an individual basis, where low equivalent doses were considered to represent contamination and rejected, along with high equivalent dose outliers and any aliquots which failed SAR acceptance criteria. The weighted mean and weighted standard deviation of the reduced set were used in age calculations. The dating results reported here provide a first chronology to interpret the changing fluvial dynamics of the Usumacinta and Grijalva rivers, and a means to quantify flood events through the historical period. The chronology established for the Grijalva section spans from the 6th century AD to the 12th century AD; and the chronology for the Usumacinta section from the 17th century AD to the 19th century AD

    A methodology to allow avalanche forecasting on an information retrieval system

    This paper presents adaptations and tests undertaken to allow an information retrieval (IR) system to forecast the likelihood of avalanches on a particular day. The forecasting process uses historical data of the weather and avalanche conditions for a large number of days. A method for adapting these data into a form usable by a text-based IR system is first described, followed by tests showing the resulting system’s accuracy to be equal to existing ‘custom built’ forecasting systems. From this, it is concluded that the adaptation methodology is effective at allowing such data to be used in a text-based IR system. A number of advantages in using an IR system for avalanche forecasting are also presented

    The effect of flight line spacing on radioactivity inventory and spatial feature characteristics of airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data

    Airborne Gamma Spectrometry (AGS) is well suited to the mapping of radioactivity in the environment. Flight parameters (e.g. speed and line spacing) directly affect the rate of area coverage, cost, and data quality of any survey. The influences of line spacing have been investigated for data from inter‐tidal, coastal and upland environments with a range of <sup>137</sup>Cs activity concentrations and depositional histories. Estimates of the integrated <sup>137</sup>Cs activity (‘inventory’) within specified areas and the shapes of depositional features were calculated for subsets of the data at different line spacings. Features with dimensions greater than the line spacing show variations in inventory and area of less than 3%, and features with dimensions less than the line spacing show larger variations and a decreased probability of detection. The choice of line spacing for a task is dependent on the dimensions of the features of interest and required edge definition. Options for line spacing for different tasks are suggested. It is noted that for regional mapping, even 5–10 km line spacing can produce useful data

    User requirement elicitation for cross-language information retrieval

    Who are the users of a cross-language retrieval system? Under what circumstances do they need to perform such multi-language searches? How will the task and the context of use affect successful interaction with the system? Answers to these questions were explored in a user study performed as part of the design stages of Clarity, a EU founded project on cross-language information retrieval. The findings resulted in a rethink of the planned user interface and a consequent expansion of the set of services offered. This paper reports on the methodology and techniques used for the elicitation of user requirements as well as how these were in turn transformed into new design solutions

    Luminescence Dating of Sediments from Ancient Irrigation Features, and Associated with Occupation of the Hinterland around Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

    This study supports a new investigation into the development and decline of irrigation and associated human activity in the Anuradhapura Hinterland, Sri Lanka (section 2). Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) age determinations have been made for a variety of sediments from bund and tank systems, irrigation channels, palaeosols and ceramic scatter horizons in the Anuradhapura hinterland (section 3). The geomorphological and archaeological significance of the age determinations has been reviewed in the light of the luminescence results and the samples’ depositional contexts, to constrain the deposition/formation dates of the sampled sediments integrate the OSL results with independent archaeological and historical expectations (section 6). A total of 26 age determinations were made (section 5.3). Dose rate determinations were made using thick source beta counting, high-resolution gamma spectrometry, field gamma spectrometry, measured water contents and calculated cosmic dose rates (sections 4.2.1, 5.1). Equivalent dose determinations were made (sections 4.2.2, 5.2) using the OSL signals from sand sized grains of quartz separated from each sample. Dose rates ranged from 1.1 to 5.0 mGy/a, equivalent dose values ranged from 0.29 to 33 Gy. Age estimates for these samples ranged from 0.14 to 13 ka, the average being 2.9 ka ± 3.1 (section 5.3). Uncertainties on the age estimates were commonly 7% at one standard error. The OSL age estimates from the largest bund and some ceramic scatter sites were greater than 2000 BC. This is older than expected on archaeological grounds and further investigation of these sites may be warranted. The OSL results from the other samples in the present study date bund construction during the initial urbanisation of Anuradhapura c. 400BC, coincident with the major Nachchaduwa bund construction c. 300AD, and in the Late Iron Age / Early Mediaeval period c. 600AD. They date abandonment of one irrigation channel to the 8th Century AD and its infill up to the late 10th Century when Anuradhapura was finally sacked. A further 8 age estimates, from silts and colluvium, relate to the collapse of infrastructure in the Anuradhapura hinterland during the 10th century and continued landscape response during the 11th century, followed by the lead-in to restoration of the irrigation system during the colonial era
