BACKGROUND: Methylation at arginine residues (R) is an important post-translational modification that regulates a myriad of essential cellular processes in eukaryotes, such as transcriptional regulation, RNA processing, signal transduction and DNA repair. Arginine methylation is catalyzed by a family of enzymes known as protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs). PRMTs are classified as Type I or Type II, depending on the position of the methyl group on the guanidine of the methylated arginine. Previous reports have linked symmetric R methylation to transcriptional repression, while asymmetric R methylation is generally associated with transcriptional activation. However, global studies supporting this conclusion are not available. RESULTS: Here we compared side by side the physiological and molecular roles of the best characterized plant PRMTs, the Type II PRMT5 and the Type I PRMT4, also known as CARM1 in mammals. We found that prmt5 and prmt4a;4b mutants showed similar alterations in flowering time, photomorphogenic responses and salt stress tolerance, while only prmt5 mutants exhibited alterations in circadian rhythms. An RNA-seq analysis revealed that expression and splicing of many differentially regulated genes was similarly enhanced or repressed by PRMT5 and PRMT4s. Furthermore, PRMT5 and PRMT4s co-regulated the expression and splicing of key regulatory genes associated with transcription, RNA processing, responses to light, flowering, and abiotic stress tolerance, being candidates to mediate the physiological alterations observed in the mutants. CONCLUSIONS: Our global analysis indicates that two of the most important Type I and Type II arginine methyltransferases, PRTM4 and PRMT5, have mostly overlapping as well as specific, but not opposite, roles in the global regulation of gene expression in plants.Fil: Hernando, Carlos Esteban. MOSAIX: a tool to built large mosaics from GALEX images

Large sky surveys are providing a huge amount of information for studies of the interstellar medium, the galactic structure or the cosmic web. Setting into a common frame information coming from different wavelengths, over large fields of view, is needed for this kind of research. GALEX is the only nearly all-sky survey at ultraviolet wavelengths and contains fundamental information for all types of studies. GALEX field of view is circular embedded in a squared matrix of 3840 x 3840 pixels. This fact makes it hard to get GALEX images properly overlapped with the existing astronomical tools such as Aladin or Montage. We developed our own software for this purpose. In this article, we describe this software and makes it available to the community.Comment: 7 pages, including 8 figures, accepted by Astrophysics and Space Scienc

THE IMPACT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODOLOGIES IN THE COLLEGE OF NURSING GRADUATES’ COMPETENCY: A TRACER STUDY FOR THE S.Y. 2019-2022

Nursing graduate competency is the ability to complete a task efficiently or successfully. However, it is a brief one that does not fully accommodate definitions. The vast majority would likely concur that competency is a positive trait to something an individual needs a more significant amount. In any case, an individual cannot make somebody more able just by giving them something like information. There is no supernatural competency pill. The term competency should be used and applied to the work setting in a broad scope of relevant circumstances and correct teaching and learning methodologies in any higher educational institution (Dede, 2010). With these concerns, it should be inculcated in most nursing graduates' capacity to apply competently the information, skills, and values that match the needs of their profession, satisfy the demands of the employer, and contribute to the overall attainment of institutional goals in their field of endeavor (Abas & Imam, 2016). Additionally, varied teaching and learning methodologies in the school play an important role in establishing these competencies that were not clearly emphasized and with no alignment as to the most suitable teaching and learning methodologies to enforce competent graduates. Thus, the present study tried to address this research gap to add more to a body of knowledge on employability, skills, and the graduates' contextual performance

The development of new technology breaks the boundaries of the urban and reaches rural contexts in different ways, creating new visions, expectations and challenges to the subjects. The rural school does not remain outside these social phenomena where teachers face the challenge of technology in situations for which they have not been trained. Students with new expectations and demands on the teacher’s role, arising from new forms of socialization, where the use of cell phones, social networks and television programs seem to enter school creating in the teacher the feeling of an “invaded.space “. This paper presents partial results ofa research still in progress taking place in rural schools in the Province of Salta, and inquire about learning situations and the impact of new technologies on teaching practices in primary schools. For this work we state in particular the ways in which these requirements impact from the emotional and professional in the daily work of teachers. Our approach, that is qualitative, seeks to describe the features of teaching practices, to understand the problems at appear in their own areas, opening gaps for further research and reflection on the practices in rural contexts.Fil: Sanchez, Lorena Elizabeth. Characterising the inflation targeting regime in South Korea

    Get PDF
This paper attempts at characterising South Korean monetary policy in the period of explicit inflation targeting started in 1999. We explain Korean interest rates in relation to an estimated macro-model, assuming that monetary policy is set optimally. This allows us to obtain the central bank’s parameters in the policy objective function. During the IT regime, the data support that the Bank of Korea pursued optimal policy geared towards achieving price stability, with the degree of interest rate smoothing being estimated to be considerable. In addition, the central bank loss function is estimated to include negligible weights on output and exchange rate variability

THE COLLEGE OF NURSING FACULTY PERCEPTIONS AND ACCEPTABILITY TO THE UNIVERSITY’S STUDENT RETENTION AND ELIMINATION POLICY

Student retention is defined as the extent to which the learners stay or remain at an HEI or Higher Education Institution and complete a program or course of study within a specified period. Several terms are linked to describe retention and its’ policies. Based on research, one of the key components of student success is the faculty. They play a vital role in the student's college experiences, including retention. A college student manual was distributed University-wide and supplemental manuals were created to provide information to the students and faculty regarding rules and regulations. However, despite the presence of these documents, a study regarding the faculty’s perception and whether they accept these policies is still non-existent. The role of the faculty in successful institutional efforts in student retention is not well investigated. Therefore, these weaknesses can challenge the successful outcomes of many institutional efforts, hence creating this research initiative. The purpose of this study is to explore the faculty’s perception regarding the student retention and elimination policy. Moreover, the acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of the policy were evaluated. The current research findings and recommendations could assist the University and administration in developing strategic plans to respond more effectively to challenges associated with student retention. The current analysis applied a mixed-methods approach of triangulating the quantitative questionnaire and qualitative interviews. Particularly the concurrent triangulation strategy. . Based on the findings, all areas yielded high acceptability (4.32), highly appropriate (4.375), and highly feasible as reflected in the table. This would mean that the faculty embraced the contents of the student manual about its’ retention and elimination policy. However, four themes emerged during data analysis namely: (A) Dissemination; (B) Orientation; (C) Action; and (D) Revalidation. The faculty members understand the value they bring to institutions’ ability to help retain students, because they care about their success, and strive to incorporate practices that support student retention. The findings show that the faculty have moved beyond needing to be persuaded that they are important to student retention to recognizing the value of their role. Faculty are willing to participate in student retention initiatives that align with their values

This paper presents the development of the conceptual design of a coastal Patrol vessel with the capacity to receive and deploy a helicopter, in order to increase the efficiency of coastguard operations developed by the Colombian National Navy. As a starting point, the design of the coastal patrol vessel built by Cotecmar and named CPV46 was taken, on which modifications were implemented in its main dimensions and distribution of spaces, which allowed to include a flight deck to receive a BELL 412 EP helicopter, complying with the regulations for this type of operations. This design was developed based on the design spiral method, where each turn of the spiral includes estimates and performance calculations influenced by each other and corresponding to the different stages of the design. For this work, the conceptual design was divided into eight booklets containing the state of the art, mission profile, capacity sizing, naval architecture, propeller selection, generator selection, stability study and cost estimation, concluding in the feasibility of the design based on its cost at a conceptual level.
