    Surface plasmon-polariton mediated emission from phosphorescent dendrimer light-emitting diodes

A combination of angle dependent electroluminescence, photoluminescence, and reflectance measurements is used to identify emission originating from the guided modes of the device. It is found that the SPP modes, which are usually nonradiative, are coupled to light by a wavelength scale periodic microstructure. It is demonstrated that the necessary microstructure can be readily fabricated by solvent-assisted micromoulding. Our results indicate that such an approach may offer a means to increase the efficiency of dendrimer based OLEDs

    On convergent series representations of Mellin-Barnes integrals

    Multiple Mellin-Barnes integrals are often used for perturbative calculations in particle physics. In this context, the evaluation of such objects may be performed through residues calculations which lead to their expression as multiple series in powers and logarithms of the parameters involved in the problem under consideration. However, in most of the cases, several series representations exist for a given integral. They converge in different regions of values of the parameters, and it is not obvious to obtain them. For twofold integrals we present a method which allows to derive straightforwardly and systematically: (a) different sets of poles which correspond to different convergent double series representations of a given integral, (b) the regions of convergence of all these series (without an a priori full knowledge of their general term), and (c) the general term of each series (this may be performed, if necessary, once the relevant domain of convergence has been found). This systematic procedure is illustrated with some integrals which appear, among others, in the calculation of the two-loop hexagon Wilson loop in N = 4 SYM theory.     A Novel Unsupervised Method to Identify Genes Important in the Anti-viral Response: Application to Interferon/Ribavirin in Hepatitis C Patients

    Background: Treating hepatitis C with interferon/ribavirin results in a varied response in terms of decrease in viral titer and ultimate outcome. Marked responders have a sharp decline in viral titer within a few days of treatment initiation, whereas in other patients there is no effect on the virus (poor responders). Previous studies have shown that combination therapy modifies expression of hundreds of genes in vitro and in vivo. However, identifying which, if any, of these genes have a role in viral clearance remains challenging. Aims: The goal of this paper is to link viral levels with gene expression and thereby identify genes that may be responsible for early decrease in viral titer. Methods: Microarrays were performed on RNA isolated from PBMC of patients undergoing interferon/ribavirin therapy. Samples were collected at pre-treatment (day 0), and 1, 2, 7, 14 and 28 days after initiating treatment. A novel method was applied to identify genes that are linked to a decrease in viral titer during interferon/ribavirin treatment. The method uses the relationship between inter-patient gene expression based proximities and inter-patient viral titer based proximities to define the association between microarray gene expression measurements of each gene and viral-titer measurements. Results: We detected 36 unique genes whose expressions provide a clustering of patients that resembles viral titer based clustering of patients. These genes include IRF7, MX1, OASL and OAS2, viperin and many ISG's of unknown function. Conclusion: The genes identified by this method appear to play a major role in the reduction of hepatitis C virus during the early phase of treatment. The method has broad utility and can be used to analyze response to any group of factors influencing biological outcome such as antiviral drugs or anti-cancer agents where microarray data are available. © 2007 Brodsky et al

    Efficiency of radiative emission from thin films of a light-emitting conjugated polymer

"Copyright © 2001 by the American Physical Society."We examine the efficiency of radiative emission from thin layers of light-emitting conjugated polymers. We compare our experimental results for photoluminescence of the conjugated polymer poly(2-methoxy, 5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy) 1,4 phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV) with those of a theoretical model, finding good agreement between the two. The specially developed model takes into account several factors including absorption in the emissive layer, a spread of emitter sites within the layer, and the broad emission spectrum of the polymer. We find that the photoluminescence quantum efficiency for radiative emission of a bare MEH-PPV film on a glass substrate is ∼25%. We then apply our model to study electroluminescent devices. We show that for these structures the efficiency of radiative emission is ∼10%. There is thus potential for considerable improvement in efficiency for both systems through recovery of some of the wasted waveguided light. Finally we use our model to reexamine some controversial results that indicate the probability of singlet exciton formation to be 0.4±0.05, and thus greater than the 0.25 expected from spin statistics. Our reanalysis supports a probability >0.25. We conclude by discussing the limitations of present models, including our own, in predicting the performance of realistic light-emitting diodes

    Relationship between photonic band structure and emission characteristics of a polymer distributed feedback laser

"Copyright © 2001 by the American Physical Society."We present an experimental study of the emission characteristics and photonic band structure of a distributed feedback polymer laser, based on the material poly[2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene]. We use measurements of the photonic band dispersion to explain how the substrate microstructure modifies both spontaneous and stimulated emission. The lasing structure exhibits a one-dimensional photonic band gap around 610 nm, with lasing occurring at one of the two associated band edges. The band edge (frequency) selection mechanism is found to be a difference in the level of output coupling of the modes associated with the two band edges. This is a feature of the second-order distributed feedback mechanism we have employed and is clearly evident in the measured photonic band structur
