    Quasielastic Scattering of Thermal Neutrons by CH3OH and CH3SH

    We report measurements of the line broadening of thermal neutrons quasielastically scattered from room temperature methyl alcohol and methyl mercaptan in the liquid phase. The linewidths for CH3SH are found to be approximately twice those of CH3OH. This is interpreted to be additional evidence of the relative freedom of molecular motions and lack of hydrogen bonding in CH3SH. The linewidth data are discussed in terms of the simple diffusion model, and for methanol, in terms of a globular diffusion model. For methanol a diffusion constant of 3.25 × 10−5 cm2sec−1 and a diffusing globule mass of ∼3.5 molecules are in agreement with the data.     Copper wire bond technology developments continue to be a subject of technical interest to the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) NEPP (NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging Program) which funded this update. Based on this new research, additional copper bond wire vulnerabilities were found in the literature - Crevice corrosion, intrinsic degradation of palladium coated copper wire, congregation of palladium near ball bond interface leading to failure, residual aluminum pad metallization impact on device lifetimes, stitch cracking phenomena, package delamination's that have resulted in wire bond failures and device failure due to elemental sulfur. A search of the U.S.A. patent web site found 3 noteworthy patents on the following developments: claim of a certain IMC (Intermetallic Compound) thickness as a mitigation solution to chlorine corrosion; claim of using materials with different pHs to neutralize contaminants in a package containing copper wire bonds; and a discussion on ball shear test threshold values for different applications. In addition, an aerospace contractor of military hardware had a presentation on copper bond wires where it was reported that there was a parametric shift and noise susceptibility of devices with copper bond wires which affected legacy design performance. A review of silver bond wire (another emerging technology) technical papers found that an electromigration failure mechanism was evident in device applications that operate under high current conditions. More studies may need to be performed on a comprehensive basis. Research areas for consideration are suggested, however, these research and or qualification/standard test areas are not all inclusive and should not be construed as the element (s) that delivers any potential copper wire bond solution. A false sense of security may occur, whenever there is a reliance on passing any particular qualification, standard, or test protocol

    Copper wire bonds have replaced gold wire bonds in the majority of commercial semiconductor devices for the latest technology nodes. Although economics has been the driving mechanism to lower semiconductor packaging costs for a savings of about 20% by replacing gold wire bonds with copper, copper also has materials property advantages over gold. When compared to gold, copper has approximately: 25% lower electrical resistivity, 30% higher thermal conductivity, 75% higher tensile strength and 45% higher modulus of elasticity. Copper wire bonds on aluminum bond pads are also more mechanically robust over time and elevated temperature due to the slower intermetallic formation rate - approximately 1/100th that of the gold to aluminum intermetallic formation rate. However, there are significant tradeoffs with copper wire bonding - copper has twice the hardness of gold which results in a narrower bonding manufacturing process window and requires that the semiconductor companies design more mechanically rigid bonding pads to prevent cratering to both the bond pad and underlying chip structure. Furthermore, copper is significantly more prone to corrosion issues. The semiconductor packaging industry has responded to this corrosion concern by creating a palladium coated copper bonding wire, which is more corrosion resistant than pure copper bonding wire. Also, the selection of the device molding compound is critical because use of environmentally friendly green compounds can result in internal CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatches with the copper wire bonds that can eventually lead to device failures during thermal cycling. Despite the difficult problems associated with the changeover to copper bonding wire, there are billions of copper wire bonded devices delivered annually to customers. It is noteworthy that Texas Instruments announced in October of 2014 that they are shipping microcircuits containing copper wire bonds for safety critical automotive applications. An evaluation of copper wire bond technology for applicability to spaceflight hardware may be warranted along with concurrently compiling a comprehensive understanding of the failure mechanisms involved with copper wire bonded semiconductor devices

    Understanding and utilization of Thematic Mapper and other remotely sensed data for vegetation monitoring

    The TM Tasseled Cap transformation, which provides both a 50% reduction in data volume with little or no loss of important information and spectral features with direct physical association, is presented and discussed. Using both simulated and actual TM data, some important characteristics of vegetation and soils in this feature space are described, as are the effects of solar elevation angle and atmospheric haze. A preliminary spectral haze diagnostic feature, based on only simulated data, is also examined. The characteristics of the TM thermal band are discussed, as is a demonstration of the use of TM data in energy balance studies. Some characteristics of AVHRR data are described, as are the sensitivities to scene content of several LANDSAT-MSS preprocessing techniques

    Reversing conditional orderings

    We analyze some specific aspects concerning conditional orderings and relations among them. To this purpose we define a suitable concept of reversed conditional ordering and prove some related results. In particular we aim to compare the univariate stochastic orderings ≤ st, ≤ hr, and ≤ lr in terms of differences among different notions of conditional orderings. Some applications of our result to the analysis of positive dependence will be detailed. We concentrate attention to the case of a pair of scalar random variables X, Y ​. Suitable extensions to multivariate cases are possible

    The ROTSE-III Robotic Telescope System

    The observation of a prompt optical flash from GRB990123 convincingly demonstrated the value of autonomous robotic telescope systems. Pursuing a program of rapid follow-up observations of gamma-ray bursts, the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE) has developed a next-generation instrument, ROTSE-III, that will continue the search for fast optical transients. The entire system was designed as an economical robotic facility to be installed at remote sites throughout the world. There are seven major system components: optics, optical tube assembly, CCD camera, telescope mount, enclosure, environmental sensing & protection and data acquisition. Each is described in turn in the hope that the techniques developed here will be useful in similar contexts elsewhere.Comment: 19 pages, including 4 figures. To be published in PASP in January, 2003.     Delirium, frailty and mortality: interactions in a prospective study of hospitalized older people

    BACKGROUND: It is unknown if the association between delirium and mortality is consistent for individuals across the whole range of health states. A bimodal relationship has been proposed, where delirium is particularly adverse for those with underlying frailty, but may have a smaller effect (perhaps even protective) if it is an early indicator of acute illness in fitter people. We investigated the impact of delirium on mortality in a cohort simultaneously evaluated for frailty. METHODS: We undertook an exploratory analysis of a cohort of consecutive acute medical admissions aged ≥70. Delirium on admission was ascertained by psychiatrists. A Frailty Index (FI) was derived according to a standard approach. Deaths were notified from linked national mortality statistics. Cox regression was used to estimate associations between delirium, frailty and their interactions on mortality. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 710 individuals. Both delirium and frailty were independently associated with increased mortality rates (delirium: HR 2.4, 95%CI 1.8–3.3, p<0.01; frailty (per SD): HR 3.5, 95%CI 1.2–9.9, p=0.02). Estimating the effect of delirium in tertiles of FI, mortality was greatest in the lowest tertile: tertile 1 HR 3.4 (95%CI 2.1–5.6); tertile 2 HR 2.7 (95%CI 1.5–4.6); tertile 3 HR 1.9 (95% CI 1.2–3.0). CONCLUSION: While delirium and frailty contribute to mortality, the overall impact of delirium on admission appears to be greater at lower levels of frailty. In contrast to the hypothesis that there is a bimodal distribution for mortality, delirium appears to be particularly adverse when precipitated in fitter individuals

    Building governance and energy efficiency: Mapping the interdisciplinary challenge

    Improving the energy efficiency of multi-owned properties (MoPs)—commonly known as apartment or condominium buildings—is central to the achievement of European energy targets. However, little work to date has focused on how to facilitate retrofit in this context. Drawing on interdisciplinary Social Sciences and Humanities expertise in academia, policy and practice, this chapter posits that decision-making processes within MoPs might provide a key to the retrofit challenge. Existing theories or models of decision-making, applied in the MoP context, might help to explain how collective retrofit decisions are taken—or overlooked. Insights from case studies and practitioners are also key. Theories of change might then be employed to develop strategies to facilitate positive retrofit decisions. The chapter maps the issues and sets an agenda for further interdisciplinary research in this novel area
