Forecasting Short-Term Stock Returns Using Irregular Pricing Behavior in the Options Market

This paper uses regression analysis to examine the relationship between today\u27s implied volatility on AMD stock options with tomorrow\u27s return on the underlying. An economic analyis of the options markets\u27 micro-structure is discussed to establish the intuition and the basis behind the relationship. Four seperate models are developed to examine its statistical significance and the ability of options\u27 prices to accurately forecast returns on the underlying security. The hypothesis of the paper is that daily changes in implied volatility can be used to earn higher than expected returns on the underlying stock. I find that implied volatility can be used to increase forecasting accuracy and may proved a means by which the Efficient Markets Hypothesis can be refuted

Spatial variability of void structure in thin stochastic fibrous materials

Theory is presented for the distributions of local process intensity and local average pore dimensions in random fibrous materials. For complete partitioning of the network into contiguous square zones, the variance of local process intensity is shown to be proportional to the mean process intensity and inversely proportional to the zone size. The coefficient of variation of local average pore area is shown to be approximately double that of the local average pore diameter with both properties being inversely proportional to the square root of zone size and mean process intensity. The results have relevance to heterogenous near-planar fibrous materials including paper, nonwoven textiles, nanofibrous composites and electrospun polymer fibre networks.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

Climate and Plant Growth in Certain Vegetative Associations

The relation of climate to the growth and development of vegetation is of profound importance in both practical and experimental agriculture. It is extremely useful to know the cause of successful growth and establishment, or of partial success or failure, of various species in different plant associations and under widely contrasted climatic conditions. The climatic requirements of various plant types are largely responsible for the results obtained in the case of experimental seedings and plantings of most species. Once the adverse climatic factors are definitely known, failures with plants may be largely avoided by the judicious selection of sites or of species especially adapted to withstand the limiting factors. Therefore, a series of experiments was undertaken, (a) to obtain a comparison of the climatic requirements of the main plant types, and (b) to determine, quantitatively, the relation between various environmental factors on the one hand and plant growth and certain other physiological functions on the other. The results obtained appear to be conclusive in most instances and should prove of value both in experimental and in practical agriculture and forestry
