This article reports a case of pacemaker infective endocarditis in a 14 month old girl, caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae. There are no other cases in children reported in the literature. The issues surrounding the case and the evidence which influenced the management are discussedpeer-reviewe

3 year old with chronic wet cough : Intralobar Bronchopulmonary sequestration

    Get PDF
Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) is a rare congenital foregut anomaly of the lung, consisting of nonfunctioning primitive tissue that does not communicate with the healthy tracheobronchial tree. The abnormal segment has its own anomalous systemic blood supply, and typically drains into the pulmonary venous system. It is frequently asymptomatic and may be discovered incidentally. Symptoms may vary, with patients presenting with vague symptoms related to chronic respiratory infection. Early diagnosis and intervention decreases morbidity and mortality. We present a case of intralobar pulmonary sequestration involving the right lower lobe in a male child.peer-reviewe

Observations on the natural history of the painted frog Discoglossus pictus pictus (Amphibia : Anura : Discoglossidae) in the Maltese Island (Central Mediterranean)

    Get PDF
The painted frog, Discoglossus pictus Otth, is the only amphibian presently inhabiting the Maltese Islands. This species is native, fossilized remains having been found in local deposits of Pleistocene age (Bate, 1935; Boessneck & Kuver, 1970). Currently, the painted frog is found on Malta and Gozo, the two largest inhabited islands, but it has not been reported from Comino, the third main island, or from any of the smaller islets (Schembri, 1983). The nominate subspecies is known only from Sicily and the Maltese Islands (Lanza el aI., 1986) and in the latter is considered to be threatened (Lanfranco & Schembri, 1989).peer-reviewe

New records of Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790) in Maltese coastal waters

    Get PDF
Lobotes surinamensis is considered as a rare occurrence in the Mediterranean Sea, being mainly encountered in the eastern and central areas of the basin. The species was previously recorded only once from the Maltese Islands, from offshore waters 45 miles south of the islands. Numerous recent records of the species in Maltese nearshore waters suggest that the same species is becoming more common in such waters, possibly hinting at the geographical expansion of populations of this thermophilic fish species in the Mediterranean.peer-reviewe

Transforming growth factor-beta promotes rhinovirus replication in bronchial epithelial cells by suppressing the innate immune response

    Get PDF
Rhinovirus (RV) infection is a major cause of asthma exacerbations which may be due to a deficient innate immune response in the bronchial epithelium. We hypothesized that the pleiotropic cytokine, TGF-?, influences interferon (IFN) production by primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs) following RV infection. Exogenous TGF-?(2) increased RV replication and decreased IFN protein secretion in response to RV or double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). Conversely, neutralizing TGF-? antibodies decreased RV replication and increased IFN expression in response to RV or dsRNA. Endogenous TGF-?(2) levels were higher in conditioned media of PBECs from asthmatic donors and the suppressive effect of anti-TGF-? on RV replication was significantly greater in these cells. Basal SMAD-2 activation was reduced when asthmatic PBECs were treated with anti-TGF-? and this was accompanied by suppression of SOCS-1 and SOCS-3 expression. Our results suggest that endogenous TGF-? contributes to a suppressed IFN response to RV infection possibly via SOCS-1 and SOCS-3

A rare case of paediatric narcolepsy in Malta

    Get PDF
Narcolepsy is a lifelong disorder that is usually diagnosed in early adulthood, however most often symptoms begin in the childhood years. It is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness (EDS) and features of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. It is under diagnosed in both children and adults due to the clinical heterogeneity. We report a case of a child presenting with excessive day time sleepiness, who was diagnosed with narcolepsy, which although is a rare disease, is very treatable, and early intervention will reduce its psychosocial impact.peer-reviewe
