Participatory Evaluation of Cultural Heritage Based Programming to Empower Communities: A Quantitative Analysis
A survey conducted at six Florida regions examines participants’ perceptions of public archaeology outreach programs on cultural heritage preservation. The findings for participants’ perceptions showed that the Florida Public Archaeology Network is reaching the organizational goal in creating appreciation and awareness for cultural heritage. Statistical analysis demonstrated a correlation between the programs being educational and changing participants’ perceptions in archaeology, and participants’ perceptions being changed and creating a love for cultural heritage and archaeology. These responses will information how public archaeology programs are impacting Florida’s cultural heritage through citizen science programs focused on preserving the past

Building a Community of Practice: A Case Study of Introductory College Chemistry Students
Engagement in active learning and learning communities is important for persistence of STEM students early in their academic programs. Colleges and universities have an ongoing call to facilitate active learning techniques, yet large group, lecture-based instruction is still the prominent method of instruction. This qualitative case study examines interviews and classroom observations of undergraduate chemistry students enrolled at a primarily undergraduate institution. Critical educational elements were identified for chemistry students participating in a redesigned, introductory course which included a collaborative peer-lead learning experience. The participants engaged in required, weekly sessions structured around community building and active learning. The data were framed through a community of practice (CoP) framework, and emergent themes were centered on the following components: mutual engagement, joint enterprise, and shared repertoire. Findings show participant engagement created opportunities for collaboration beyond the required, weekly sessions, which included forming study groups and seeking assistance from chemistry tutors. Participants also shared study techniques based on a mutual understanding that effective learning required routine practice. Implications for STEM departments and researchers about implementing research-based curriculum are discussed
Sedentary behavior and subclinical atherosclerosis in African Americans: cross-sectional analysis of the Jackson heart study
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported conflicting results as to whether an association exists between sedentary time and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among African Americans. These studies, however, were limited by lack of consideration of sedentary behavior in leisure versus non-leisure settings. To elucidate this relation, we investigated the associations of television (TV) viewing time and occupational sitting with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), a subclinical atherosclerosis measure, in a community-based sample of African Americans. METHODS: We studied 3410 participants from the Jackson Heart Study, a single-site, community-based study of African Americans residing in Jackson, MS. CIMT was assessed by ultrasonography and represented mean far-wall thickness across right and left sides of the common carotid artery. TV viewing time, a measure of leisure sedentary behavior, and occupational sitting, a measure of non-leisure sedentary behavior, were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: In a multivariable regression model that included physical activity and CVD risk factors, longer TV viewing time (2-4 h/day and >4 h/day) was associated with greater CIMT (adjusted mean ± SE difference from referent [4 h/day; P-trend =0.001). In contrast, more frequent occupational sitting ('sometimes' and 'often/always') was associated with lower CIMT (adjusted mean ± SE difference from referent ['never/seldom']:-0.021 ± 0.009 mm for 'sometimes', and-0.018 ± 0.008 mm for 'often/always'; P-trend = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Longer TV viewing time was associated with greater CIMT, while occupational sitting was associated with lower CIMT. These findings suggest the role of sedentary behaviors in the pathogenesis of CVD among African Americans may vary by whether individuals engage in leisure versus non-leisure sedentary behaviors

Physical Activity and Incident Hypertension in African Americans: The Jackson Heart Study
There is limited empirical evidence to support the protective effects of physical activity in the prevention of hypertension among African Americans. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of physical activity with incident hypertension among African Americans. We studied 1311 participants without hypertension at baseline enrolled in the Jackson Heart Study, a community-based study of African Americans residing in Jackson, Mississippi. Overall physical activity, moderate–vigorous physical activity, and domain-specific physical activity (work, active living, household, and sport/exercise) were assessed by self-report during the baseline examination (2000–2004). Incident hypertension, assessed at examination 2 (2005–2008) and examination 3 (2009–2013), was defined as the first visit with systolic/diastolic blood pressure ≥140/90 mm Hg or self-reported antihypertensive medication use. Over a median follow-up of 8.0 years, there were 650 (49.6%) incident hypertension cases. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for incident hypertension comparing participants with intermediate and ideal versus poor levels of moderate–vigorous physical activity were 0.84 (0.67–1.05) and 0.76 (0.58–0.99), respectively (P trend=0.038). A graded, dose–response association was also present for sport/exercise-related physical activity (Quartiles 2, 3, and 4 versus Quartile 1: 0.92 [0.68–1.25], 0.87 [0.67–1.13], 0.75 [0.58–0.97], respectively; P trend=0.032). There were no statistically significant associations observed for overall physical activity, or work, active living, and household-related physical activities. In conclusion, the results of the current study suggest that regular moderate–vigorous physical activity or sport/exercise-related physical activity may reduce the risk of developing hypertension in African Americans
Masked Hypertension and Incident Clinic Hypertension Among Blacks in the Jackson Heart StudyNovelty and Significance
Masked hypertension, defined as non-elevated clinic blood pressure and elevated out-of-clinic blood pressure may be an intermediary stage in the progression from normotension to hypertension. We examined the associations of out-of-clinic blood pressure and masked hypertension using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring with incident clinic hypertension in the Jackson Heart Study, a prospective cohort of African Americans. Analyses included 317 participants with clinic blood pressure <140/90mmHg, complete ABPM, who were not taking antihypertensive medication at baseline in 2000–2004. Masked daytime hypertension was defined as mean daytime blood pressure ≥135/85mmHg; masked nighttime hypertension as mean nighttime blood pressure ≥120/70mmHg; and masked 24-hour hypertension as mean 24-hour blood pressure ≥130/80mmHg. Incident clinic hypertension, assessed at study visits in 2005–2008 and 2009–2012, was defined as the first visit with clinic systolic/diastolic blood pressure ≥140/90mmHg or antihypertensive medication use. During a median follow-up of 8.1 years, there were 187 (59.0%) incident cases of clinic hypertension. Clinic hypertension developed in 79.2% and 42.2% of participants with and without any masked hypertension, 85.7% and 50.4% with and without masked daytime hypertension, 79.9% and 43.7% with and without masked nighttime hypertension and 85.7% and 48.2% with and without masked 24-hour hypertension, respectively. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% CI) of incident clinic hypertension for any masked hypertension and masked daytime, nighttime, and 24-hour hypertension were 2.13 (1.51–3.02), 1.79 (1.24–2.60), 2.22 (1.58–3.12), and 1.91 (1.32–2.75), respectively. These findings suggest that ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can identify African Americans at increased risk for developing clinic hypertension
Modifiable Risk Factors Versus Age on Developing High Predicted Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Blacks
Background: Clinical guidelines recommend using predicted atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk to inform treatment decisions. The objective was to compare the contribution of changes in modifiable risk factors versus aging to the development of high 10‐year predicted ASCVD risk.
Methods and Results: A prospective follow‐up was done of the Jackson Heart Study, an exclusively black cohort at visit 1 (2000–2004) and visit 3 (2009–2012). Analyses included 1115 black participants without high 10‐year predicted ASCVD risk (<7.5%), hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or ASCVD at visit 1. We used the Pooled Cohort equations to calculate the incidence of high (≥7.5%) 10‐year predicted ASCVD risk at visit 3. We recalculated the percentage with high 10‐year predicted ASCVD risk at visit 3 assuming each risk factor (age, systolic blood pressure, antihypertensive medication use, diabetes mellitus, smoking, total and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol), one at a time, did not change from visit 1. The mean age at visit 1 was 45.2±9.5 years. Overall, 30.9% (95% CI 28.3–33.4%) of participants developed high 10‐year predicted ASCVD risk. Aging accounted for 59.7% (95% CI 54.2–65.1%) of the development of high 10‐year predicted ASCVD risk compared with 32.8% (95% CI 27.0–38.2%) for increases in systolic blood pressure or antihypertensive medication initiation and 12.8% (95% CI 9.6–16.5%) for incident diabetes mellitus. Among participants <50 years, the contribution of increases in systolic blood pressure or antihypertensive medication initiation was similar to aging.
Conclusions: Increases in systolic blood pressure and antihypertensive medication initiation are major contributors to the development of high 10‐year predicted ASCVD risk in blacks, particularly among younger adults
Origins Space Telescope: Baseline mission concept
The Origins Space Telescope will trace the history of our origins from the time dust and heavy elements permanently altered the cosmic landscape to present-day life. How did galaxies evolve from the earliest galactic systems to those found in the Universe today? How do habitable planets form? How common are life-bearing worlds? To answer these alluring questions, Origins will operate at mid-and far-infrared (IR) wavelengths and offer powerful spectroscopic instruments and sensitivity three orders of magnitude better than that of the Herschel Space Observatory, the largest telescope flown in space to date. We describe the baseline concept for Origins recommended to the 2020 US Decadal Survey in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The baseline design includes a 5.9-m diameter telescope cryocooled to 4.5 K and equipped with three scientific instruments. A mid-infrared instrument (Mid-Infrared Spectrometer and Camera Transit spectrometer) will measure the spectra of transiting exoplanets in the 2.8 to 20 μm wavelength range and offer unprecedented spectrophotometric precision, enabling definitive exoplanet biosignature detections. The far-IR imager polarimeter will be able to survey thousands of square degrees with broadband imaging at 50 and 250 μm. The Origins Survey Spectrometer will cover wavelengths from 25 to 588 μm, making wide-area and deep spectroscopic surveys with spectral resolving power R ∼ 300, and pointed observations at R ∼ 40,000 and 300,000 with selectable instrument modes. Origins was designed to minimize complexity. The architecture is similar to that of the Spitzer Space Telescope and requires very few deployments after launch, while the cryothermal system design leverages James Webb Space Telescope technology and experience. A combination of current-state-of-the-art cryocoolers and next-generation detector technology will enable Origins\u27 natural background-limited sensitivity

Participatory Evaluation of Cultural Heritage Based Programming to Empower Communities: : A Quantitative Analysis
A survey conducted on Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS)
programmes at six Florida regions examines participants’
perceptions of public archaeology outreach initiatives on
cultural heritage preservation. HMS Florida focuses on tracking
changes to at-risk archaeological sites through public outreach
programmes. A statistical analysis demonstrated a correlation
between participants’ perceptions and the effectiveness of certain
elements that provide a substantial framework for reaching the
public with the message of cultural preservation. The findings
show that the Florida Public Archaeology Network is reaching its
organisational goal of creating appreciation and awareness for
heritage, which helps to sustain the mission and vision for those
working in cultural preservation. These survey results will help
other public archaeology outreach programmes impact cultural
heritage initiatives focused on preserving the past, such as citizen
science programmes

Capturing a Stata dataset and releasing it into REDCap
With technology advances, researchers can now capture data using web-based applications. One such application, Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap), allows for data entry from any computer with an Internet connection. As the use of REDCap has increased in popularity, we have observed the need to easily create data dictionaries and data collection instruments for REDCap. The command presented in this article, redcapture, demonstrates one method to create a REDCap-ready data dictionary using a loaded Stata dataset, illustrated by examples of starting from an existing dataset or completely starting from scratch
