    The seesaw portal in testable models of neutrino masses

    A Standard Model extension with two Majorana neutrinos can explain the measured neutrino masses and mixings, and also account for the matter-antimatter asymmetry in a region of parameter space that could be testable in future experiments. The testability of the model relies to some extent on its minimality. In this paper we address the possibility that the model might be extended by extra generic new physics which we parametrize in terms of a low-energy effective theory. We consider the effects of the operators of the lowest dimensionality, d=5d=5, and evaluate the upper bounds on the coefficients so that the predictions of the minimal model are robust. One of the operators gives a new production mechanism for the heavy neutrinos at LHC via higgs decays. The higgs can decay to a pair of such neutrinos that, being long-lived, leave a powerful signal of two displaced vertices. We estimate the LHC reach to this process.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figure

    The seesaw path to leptonic CP violation

    Future experiments such as SHiP and high-intensity e+e−e^+ e^- colliders will have a superb sensitivity to heavy Majorana neutrinos with masses below MZM_Z. We show that the measurement of the mixing to electrons and muons of one such state could imply the discovery of leptonic CP violation in the context of seesaw models. We quantify in the minimal model the CP discovery potential of these future experiments, and demonstrate that a 5σ\sigma CL discovery of leptonic CP violation would be possible in a very significant fraction of parameter space.Comment: An error has been fixed, main conclusions unchange

    Impact of Wave Packet Separation in Low-Energy Sterile Neutrino Searches

    Light sterile neutrinos have been motivated by anomalies observed in short-baseline neutrino experiments.Among them, radioactive-source and reactor experiments have provided evidence and constraints, respectively, for electron neutrino disappearance compatible with an eV-scale neutrino. The results from these observations are seemingly in conflict. This letter brings into focus the assumption that the neutrino wave packet can be approximated as a plane wave, which is adopted in all analyses of such experiments. We demonstrate that the damping of oscillations, e.g., due to a finite wave packet size, solve the tension between these electron-flavor observations and constraints.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures in the main text.     The need to cover atypical agents in the initial Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) inpatients therapy is currently the focus of much debate. A lack of consensus in this issue might relate to regional variation in the prevalence of atypical agents. The most recent American guidelines (ATS and IDSA) suggest the use of a macrolid or a antipneumococcal fluoroquinolone in the initial empirical therapy of CAP, so that atypical agents are also always covered. This study aimed to compare the progression and length of hospitalization between CAP patients treated with a combination of a beta-lactamic antibiotic and a macrolid or a new quinolone (Group I) and other form of therapy without atypical agent coverage (Group II). A retrospective study was performed with 180 inpatients, admitted with PAC diagnosis between December 2000 and May 2002 in a general Pneumology Service. 105 (58,3%) patients were included in Group I and 75 (41,7%) in Group II. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding age, sex, clinical presentation, co morbidities or severity of the inaugural presentation. There were 14 patients with unfavourable clinical progression belonging 50% of them to Group I. The average of the length of hospital stay in Group I was 12.2 days and 13.7 days in Group II, which is also a non-significant statistical difference.Then, we may conclude that initial therapy covering atypical agents might not always be necessary. Prospective studies will be important to further address this question and to investigate the epidemiology of atypical agents of CAP in Portugal

    Copyright © 2009 Universita degli Studi di Firenze.This study was carried out in one of the most important strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) producing regions of Portugal, the Ribatejo, and aims to describe the quantitative component of visits by strawberry floral visitors under open field conditions. The main objectives were: (1) to assess the flower-visiting insects of the strawberry crop; (2) to evaluate the percentage of frequency (F) and activity rate (AR) in order to determine an Index of Visitation Rate (IVR) for the different categories of visitors. This study allowed us to access the vast spectrum of flower-visiting insects of the strawberry crop and to characterize their visits regarding parameters such as F and AR, used to calculate IVR. Based on the referred index it was possible to highlight three categories of insect visitors: Syrphidae (Diptera), Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera) and native bees (Hymenoptera). Other aspects were evaluated such as no. ind/flower throughout three different phases of the blooming period and field conditions. All the parameters allowed us to gather a set of information inherent to each of these categories, which will be useful for conservation and management procedures aiming at adequate pollination of the strawberry crop
