    Decay of Correlations for Certain Isometric Extensions of Anosov Flows

    We establish exponential decay of correlations of all orders for locally G-accessible isometric extensions of transitive Anosov flows, under the assumption that the strong stable and strong unstable distributions of the base Anosov flow are smooth. This is accomplished by translating accessibility properties of the extension into local non-integrability estimates measured by infinitesimal transitivity groups used by Dolgopyat, from which we obtain contraction properties for a class of `twisted' symbolic transfer operators.PHDMathematicsUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Blended learning mediated fostering of students’ engagement in an undergraduate medical education module

    Introduction: The study investigated students’ perception of introducing blended learning strategies to engage and motivate them towards lecture halls and Problem Based Learning (PBL) sessions for improving the quality of the overall students’ learning experience.Methods: A prospective study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Medical College involving a total of one hundred four (104) year II medical students for the Endocrine and Reproduction module in the academic year 2018. This module ran for six weeks. Modifications in teaching methods were made for this module introduced after approval from Endocrine & Reproduction module, year II and curriculum committees. Written informed consent was obtained from facilitators and students. To assess the effectiveness of modifications introduced, students’ feedback was taken on a Likert\u27s scale of 1-5, at the end of the module. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 20.Results: Total 94 (90%) students participated in the written feedback. Forty percent medical students (n=38) responded that videos were useful, 54% (n=51) acknowledged that post-PBL activities like crossword puzzles and Kahoot games, created significant discussions amongst students in a fun yet intellectual manner. Seventy percent of students (n=66) agreed that access to Kahoot was easy and no connectivity issues were faced. Twenty percent students (n=20) endorsed that flipped lectures enhanced understanding of topics, 87% students (n=82) felt that recorded lecture was very helpful and flash cards were found helpful by 14% students (n=12)

    Primary purpose of the article is to develop outlier robust designs. As a matter of fact, negative effect of outliers in any experimental settings is established where the outliers at any specific design point can destroy the features of the design for which it is being developed. It is attempted here in this article to develop a version of robustness for central composite designs which may protect it for outliers by introducing the idea of minimax outlying effect. This involves the calculation of the degree of outlying effect(s) outlier(s) may produce and then minimize the maximum of these outlying effects in an attempt to equalize the influence of all design points. On comparison, these outlier robust designs are proved to be more optimal, on the scales of A, D, and E optimalities, against existing conventional rotatable, orthogonal, and other such designs. The outlier robust designs, developed here, are suitable for settings prone to outliers where conventional designs fail to represent and analyze the processes and systems.El objetivo principal del artículo es desarrollar diseños robustos atípicos. De hecho, el efecto negativo de los valores atípicos en cualquier configuración experimental se establece donde los valores atípicos en cualquier punto de diseño específico pueden destruir las características del diseño para el que se está desarrollando. En este artículo se intenta desarrollar una versión de robustez para los diseños compuestos centrales que pueden protegerlo de los valores atípicos mediante la introducción de la idea del efecto periférico minimax. Esto implica el cálculo del grado de efecto (s) externo (s) que puede producir un valor atípico y luego minimizar el máximo de estos efectos externos en un intento de igualar la influencia de todos los puntos de diseño. En comparación, se demuestra que estos diseños robustos atípicos son más óptimos, en las escalas de las optimidades A, D y E, frente a los diseños convencionales existentes, ortogonales, rotativos y otros similares. Los diseños robustos atípicos, desarrollados aquí, son adecuados para configuraciones propensas a los valores atípicos en los que los diseños convencionales no representan ni analizan los procesos y sistemas.Objetivo principal do artigo é desenvolver projetos robustos outlier. Neste artigo, tenta-se desenvolver uma versão de robustez para projetos compostos centrais que possam protegê-lo de outliers, introduzindo a ideia de efeito periférico minimax.     Temporal Lobe Epilepsy with Hippocampus Sclerosis: Prevalence, Etiology, And Treatment Options with Herbal Medicines

    ABSTRACT Background and objectives: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which the patient suffers with two or more unprovoked seizures. It is one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide, affecting more than 70 million people. Currently various modes of effective treatments are available, but still there are many cases that remain drug resistant. Hence, there is a need to explore herbal medications for the treatment of drug resistant epilepsy. Methods: Recent reviews and research articles (2000-2022) from PubMed and Google Scholar have been explored. Review: Based on etiology, there are six categories of epilepsy: Genetic, Structural, Metabolic, Immune, Infectious, and Unknown epilepsy. Temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampus sclerosis (TLE-HS) is one of the most common forms of structural epilepsy. Even though several new anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) have been discovered, but the treatment of some cases, especially TLE-HS remain resistant to them. Surgery is one of the most effective treatment options for TLE-HS; however, this usually results in memory deficits, and occasionally, intracranial hematoma, delayed hydrocephalus, subdural empyema, and visual field defects in patients. Conclusion: Hence, to overcome drug resistance, new pharmacological and herbal therapies are required. Animal trials are first step in the development of new drugs, to study toxicity and efficacy of proposed drugs. Many herbs have anticonvulsant activity but remain an under-explored treatment option for epilepsy. Further research on herbal extracts as a possible treatment for epilepsy needs to be conducted

    Almond protects the liver in coronary artery disease: A randomized controlled clinical trial

    Objective: To compare the effect of Pakistani and American almonds on serum concentration of liver enzymes in coronary artery disease patients.Methods: The randomised controlled trial was conducted at the Cardiology Clinics of Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from February to July, 2012, and comprised patients who were randomised into intervention PA and AA groups and the control NI groups. Subjects in the intervention groups were provided Pakistani and American varieties of almonds 10g/day respectively with instructions to soak them overnight, remove the skin and eat them before breakfast for 12 weeks. The control group underwent no intervention. Serum concentrations of aspartate transaminase, Alanine transaminase and gamma-glutamyl transferase were analysed and compared.Results: Of the 150 subjects, 110(73.3%) completed the study. Of them, there were 38(34.5%) in PA group, 41(37.3%) in AA, and 31(28.2%) in the NI group. Dietary almonds significantly reduced serum concentrations of aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and gamma-glutamyl transferase in the two intervention groups compared to the controls group (pConclusions: A low dose of almonds was found to be an effective strategy to protect the liver
