Theyrequire orientation for the attainment of anticipatedknowledge, defined competencies, and professional valuesfor being proficient health care providers. Teaching basicscience courses in undergraduate medical education is inthe course of a paradigm shift from disciplinary to anintegrated curriculum. The accomplishment is challengingon account of extensive number of didactic lectures andassessment of students based on recall knowledge.1  Whiledesigning 'Foundation / Orientation Module' in a medicalschool, the scope of Knowledge/ Skills/ Attitudes in thecore courses of a first-year medical student are defined.Nevertheless, efforts should be made to impart criticalthinking abilities for interpretation of problems andapplication of basic knowledge in clinical practice.2 In thiscontext, medical students are encouraged to change from'Rote' to 'Meaningful Learning.'Concept Map (CM) is one way of learning conceptualknowledge with improved understanding of the concepts,retention of useful information and improvement inperformance of medical students;3 however, teachers'feedback on CM plays a pivotal role.4 This graphical toolcan be used for organizing and representing knowledgewith the important key concept linked to thesubtopics/concepts.5 This format has helped in improvingthe application of knowledge of basic science subject toclinical practice with the understanding of subject andapplication of reasoning and learning skills.1 CM can thusbe used to promote meaningful learning during discussionof the clinical cases in the "brainstorming stage", its deepanalysis during "organizing stage", organization andintegration of information in the "layout stage", furtherlinked to basic science concepts in the "linking stage, finalorganization in hierarchical fashion in the "finalizingstage".1 CM is generally not predisposed to the preferredlearning styles and can be used to facilitate meaningfullearning in visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners andso facilitate 'teaching to all types.' The orientation for theuse of this innovative tool for motivation, engagementand deep learning of medical students to be propagatedin the foundation module is, therefore, a query for medicaleducationists.References1.
