    Virološko i molekularno istraživanje na uzorcima bizona pod sumnjom da su zaraženi virusom bizonskih boginja u Egiptu 2019. godine

    In this study, skin lesions from buffaloes showing clinical signs of buffalopox infection were tested to isolate and identify the buffalopox virus (BPXV). Clinical examination of infected buffaloes was performed and visible clinical signs recorded. Skin scabs from infected buffaloes were collected and used for virus isolation on embryonated chicken egg (ECE) and tissue culture cell lines. The isolated BPXV was identified and characterized using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The infected buffaloes displayed fever, skin eruptions, enlargement of superficial lymph nodes, emaciation and drop in milk yield. The ECE inoculated with the prepared skin scab samples showed clear raised white pock lesions on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). The inoculated tissue cultures (VERO and BHK cell lines) revealed a cytopathic effect (CPE) including rounding, clumping with cytoplasmic granulation and cluster formation. PCR for the C18L specific BPXV gene was carried out on the virus infected tissue culture produced 368 bp bands. Human infection with BPXV was also recorded. It was concluded that BPXV is circulating in Egyptian buffaloes, causing economical losses and infection in contact humans.U ovoj studiji lezije kože bizona koje su pokazivale kliničke znakove infekcije bizonskim boginjama, rabljene su za izoliranje i identifikaciju virusa bizonskih boginja (BPXV). Provedeno je kliničko ispitivanje zaraženih bizona i zabilježeni su očiti klinički znaci. Kraste s kože zaraženih bizona su prikupljene i rabljene za izolaciju virusa na embrioniranom kokošjem jajetu (ECE) te linijama tkivnih staničnih kultura. Izolirani BPXV identificiran je i okarakteriziran uporabom lančane reakcije polimerazom (PCR). Zaraženi bizoni imali su vrućicu, osip na koži, povećanje površinskih limfnih čvorova, mršavjeli su, a i došlo je do pada proizvodnje mlijeka. ECE cijepljeni pripremljenim uzorcima krasta s kože pokazali su jasne uzdignute bijele lezije boginja na korioalantoičnoj membrani (CAM). Cijepljene tkivne kulture (VERO i BHK stanične linije) otkrile su citopatski učinak (CPE), uključujući zaobljivanje, agregaciju s granulacijom citoplazme i formiranje klastera. PCR za C18L specifični gen virusa bizonskih boginja proveden je na tkivnoj kulturi zaraženoj virusom proizvevši 368 bp vrpci. Zabilježena je i zaraza ljudi BPXV-om. Zaključeno je da BPXV kruži među egipatskim bizonima, što prouzroči, dođu li u kontakt s BPXV zarazu ljudi i velike ekonomske gubitke

    Ethanol Vapours to Complement or Replace Sulfur Dioxide Fumigation of Table Grapes

    Recent studies have shown that dipping table grapes in ethanol solutions at harvest improved storage of the fruit. We report here the first results obtained by treating "Chasselas" table grapes (Vitis vinifera) with ethanol vapours over the storage period. We tested the effect of ethanol at 0, 4 and 8 g/kg fruit during cold storage for 2, 4 and 6 weeks. We measured berry shatter, stem browning, Botrytis rot incidence and sensory appreciation by tasting panels. Ethanol vapours reduced Botrytis rot incidence and berry shatter, but hastened stem browning. Sensory analyses did not detect any differences between treatments

    Internal spin-singlet and spin-triplet transitions of charged excitons X- in magnetic fields in quantum wells have been studied experimentally and theoretically. The allowed X- transitions are photoionizing and exhibit a characteristic double-peak structure, which reflects the rich structure of the magnetoexciton continua in higher Landau levels (LL's).     NEW FLAVONOIDS FROM THE AERIAL PARTS OF POLYGONUM EQUISETIFORME SM (POLYGONACEAE)

    Objective: The current study was to deal the isolation and identification of secondary metabolites from Polygonum equisetiforme and evaluation of antioxidant activity of its extract.Methods: The methanol-water extract (7:3) of the air-dried aerial parts of Polygonum equisetiforme was fractionated and separated to obtain the isolated compounds by different chromatographic techniques. Structures of these compounds were elucidated by UV and 1Dâ„2D Hâ„ C NMR spectroscopy and compared with the literature data. The crude extract was evaluated for in vitro antioxidant activity using the 2,2 diphenyl dipicryl hydrazine (DPPH) method.Results: Ten secondary metabolites were isolated from Polygonum equisetiforme in this study. Of which three new flavonoids named as 3,5,7,2',5' pentahydroxyflavone 3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside (1), 3,5,7,2',5' pentahydroxyflavone 3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside 8 C-sulphated (2) and quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucucorinde 6''-methyl ester 8-sulphated (3) as well as quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucucorinde methyl ester (4), quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), quercetin 7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6), quercetin(7), myricetin (8), P-methoxy gallic acid methyl ester (9) and gallic acid (10). The antioxidant potential of P. equisetiforme extract was evaluated by investigating it's total phenolic and flavonoid content and DPPH radical scavenging activity whereby the extract showed significant antioxidant activity (IC50 = 37.45 μg/ml). The total phenolic and flavonoid content was found to be 130.79±5.502 and 45.8±1.63 μg/ml, respectively.Conclusion: Polygonum equisetiforme is a promising medicinal plant, and our study tends to support the therapeutic value of this plant as an antioxidant drug

    Prevalence and Classification of Amphistomes in Cattle and Buffaloes

    Amphistomes are snail-borne trematodes infect rumens and reticulums capable of causing acute and chronic disease in cattle and buffaloes. A total of 897 of cattle and buffaloes were examined by faecal examinations and by postmortem examinations in Giza and Garbia governourates. The collected Amphistomes were morphologically and histologically classified. We found that the incidence of Amphistomes in totally examined animals was 4.9%. The incidence was higher in the oldest animals(than young), in the spring (than other seasons) and in Garbia (than Giza). But the incidence was the same in males and females. The collected Amphistomes were classified as Paramphistomum microbothrium, Paramphistomum cervi and Carmyerius gergaerius. We concluded that Amphistomes are prevalent among the examined cattle and buffaloes in Giza and Garbia governorates.

    Stability of trions in strongly spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gases

    Low-temperature magneto-photoluminescence studies of negatively charged excitons (X- trions) are reported for n-type modulation-doped ZnSe/Zn(Cd,Mn)Se quantum wells over a wide range of Fermi energy and spin-splitting. The magnetic composition is chosen such that these magnetic two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) are highly spin-polarized even at low magnetic fields, throughout the entire range of electron densities studied (5e10 to 6.5e11 cm^-2). This spin polarization has a pronounced effect on the formation and energy of X-, with the striking result that the trion ionization energy (the energy separating X- from the neutral exciton) follows the temperature- and magnetic field-tunable Fermi energy. The large Zeeman energy destabilizes X- at the nu=1 quantum limit, beyond which a new PL peak appears and persists to 60 Tesla, suggesting the formation of spin-triplet charged excitons.Comment: 5 pages (RevTex), 4 embedded EPS figs.     Life-saving automated external defibrillation in a teenager: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Adolescent sudden death during sport participation is commonly due to cardiac causes. Survival is more likely when an automated external defibrillator (AED) is used soon after collapse.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We describe a case of sudden death in a 14 year old boy with two remarkable points, successful resuscitation at school using an AED and diagnosis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was immediately started by a witness and 5 minutes after the event the child was placed on an AED monitor that determined he was in a non shockable rhythm, therefore CPR was continued. Two minutes later, the AED monitor detected a shockable rhythm and recommended a shock, which was then administered. One minute after the shock, a palpable pulse was detected and the child began to breathe by himself. Four days after cardiac arrest, the boy was conversing and self-caring. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was suggestive of ARVC.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Ventricular fibrillation secondary to ARVC may be a devastating event and places young patients and athletes at high risk of sudden death. Immediate CPR and AED have been demonstrated to be lifesaving in such events. Therefore, we suggest that schools should have teachers skilled in CPR and accessible AEDs.</p

    Decision-making factors for an autologous stem cell transplant for older adults with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma: A qualitative analysis

    PurposeA utologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) remains a standard of care among older adults (aged ≥65) with multiple myeloma (MM). However, heterogeneity in the eligibility and utilization of ASCT remains. We identified decision-making factors that influence ASCT eligibility and utilization among older adults with MM.MethodsA qualitative study across two academic and two community centres in Ontario was conducted between July 2019-July 2020. Older adults with MM (newly diagnosed MM aged 65-75 in whom a decision had been made about ASCT in &lt;12 months) and treating oncologists completed a baseline survey and a subsequent interview, which was analyzed using thematic analysis.ResultsEighteen patients completed the survey and 9 follow-up interviews were conducted. Patients were happy with their treatment decision with “trust in their oncologist” and “wanting the best treatment” as the most important to proceed with ASCT. “Afraid of side effects” was the most common reason for declining ASCT. Fifteen oncologists completed the survey and 10 follow-up interviews were conducted. Most relied on the ‘eye-ball’ test for ASCT eligibility over geriatric screening tools. The lack of both high-quality evidence and local guidelines impacted decision-making. Both oncologists and patients felt that chronological age alone should not affect ASCT eligibility.ConclusionWhile decision-making factors regarding ASCT can be variable, both oncologists and patients indicated that chronological age alone should not represent a barrier for ASCT among older adults. Future simplification and incorporation of ASCT eligibility geriatric assessment tools in studies as well as the inclusion of these tools in local guidelines may further improve ASCT decision-making
