Correlations in the QPO Frequencies of Low Mass X-Ray Binaries and the Relativistic Precession Model
A remarkable correlation between the centroid frequencies of quasi periodic
oscillations, QPOs, (or peaked noise components) from low mass X-ray binaries,
has been recently discovered by Psaltis, Belloni and van der Klis (1999). This
correlation extends over nearly 3 decades in frequency and encompasses both
neutron star and black hole candidate systems. We discuss this result in the
light of the relativistic precession model, which has been proposed to
interpret the kHz QPOs as well as some of the lower frequency QPOs of neutron
star low mass X-ray binaries of the Atoll and Z classes. Unlike other models
the relativistic precession model does not require the compact object to be a
neutron star and can be applied to black hole candidates as well. We show that
the predictions of the relativistic precession model match both the value and
dependence of the correlation to a very good accuracy without resorting to

Spectroscopy of blue horizontal branch stars in NGC 6656 (M22)
Recent investigations revealed very peculiar properties of blue horizontal
branch (HB) stars in \omega Centauri, which show anomalously low surface
gravity and mass compared to other clusters and to theoretical models. \omega
Centauri, however, is a very unusual object, hosting a complex mix of multiple
stellar populations with different metallicity and chemical abundances. We
measured the fundamental parameters (temperature, gravity, and surface helium
abundance) of a sample of 71 blue HB stars in M22, with the aim of clarifying
if the peculiar results found in \omega Cen are unique to this cluster. M22
also hosts multiple sub-populations of stars with a spread in metallicity,
analogous to \omega Cen. The stellar parameters were measured on low-resolution
spectra fitting the Balmer and helium lines with a grid of synthetic spectra.
From these parameters, the mass and reddening were estimated. Our results on
the gravities and masses agree well with theoretical expectations, matching the
previous measurements in three "normal" clusters. The anomalies found in \omega
Cen are not observed among our stars. A mild mass underestimate is found for
stars hotter than 14\,000 K, but an exact analogy with \omega Cen cannot be
drawn. We measured the reddening in the direction of M22 with two independent
methods, finding E(B-V)=0.35 \pm 0.02 mag, with semi-amplitude of the maximum
variation \Delta(E(B-V))=0.06 mag, and an rms intrinsic dispersion of
\sigma(E(B-V))=0.03 mag.Comment: 11 pages, 9 Postscript figure

Parallel functional differentiation of an invasive annual plant on two continents.
Rapid local adaptation frequently occurs during the spread of invading species. It remains unclear, however, how consistent, and therefore potentially predictable, such patterns of local adaptation are. One approach to this question is to measure patterns of local differentiation in functional traits and plasticity levels in invasive species in multiple regions. Finding consistent patterns of local differentiation in replicate regions suggests that these patterns are adaptive. Further, this outcome indicates that the invading species likely responds predictably to selection along environmental gradients, even though standing genetic variation is likely to have been reduced during introduction. We studied local differentiation in the invasive annual plant Erodium cicutarium in two invaded regions, California and Chile. We collected seeds from across strong gradients in precipitation and temperature in Mediterranean-climate parts of the two regions (10 populations per region). We grew seeds from maternal families from these populations through two generations and exposed the second generation to contrasting levels of water and nutrient availability. We measured growth, flowering time and leaf functional traits across these treatments to obtain trait means and plasticity measures. We found strong differentiation among populations in all traits. Plants from drier environments flowered earlier, were less plastic in flowering time and reached greater size in all treatments. Correlations among traits within regions suggested a coordinated evolutionary response along environmental gradients associated with growing season length. There was little divergence in traits and trait intercorrelations between regions, but strongly parallel divergence in traits within regions. Similar, statistically consistent patterns of local trait differentiation across two regions suggest that local adaptation to environmental gradients has aided the spread of this invasive species, and that the formation of ecotypes in newly invaded environments has been relatively consistent and predictable
A theoretical quantum study of the electronic properties of mentoxy dichloro phosphorous (C10H19OPCl2)
Indexación: Scopus.A theoretical quantum study of the organophosphorus compound with formula C10H19OPCl2 (MEPCL2) was carried out. The results of the calculations show excellent agreement between experimental and computed frequencies evaluated at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. A study of the electronic properties, such as excitation energies and wavelengths were performed employing the time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) method. Global a chemical reactivity of MEPCL2 was analyzed through global reactivity descriptors, while its local reactivity was analyzed by mean maps of the electrostatic potential. Supergravity with cosmological constant and the AdS group
It is shown that the supersymmetric extension of the Stelle-West formalism
permits the construction of an action for -dimensional N=1 supergravity
with cosmological constant genuinely invariant under the Since the
action is invariant under the supersymmetric extension of the group, the
supersymmetry algebra closes off shell without the need for auxiliary fields.
The limit case , i.e. -dimensional N=1 supergravity invariant
under the Poincar\'{e} supergroup is also discussed.Comment: 10 page
