New insights into oxygen surface coverage and the resulting two-component structure of graphene oxide
Elucidating the essential details of the structure of graphene oxide (GO) is still a challenge. There is no consensus in the increasingly abundant literature, especially relating to the epoxy groups as the main surface complexes in the basal plane, as well as the simultaneous presence of GO sheets and oxidative debris (OD), with a large difference in their oxygen content. In the present work we characterized the base-washed GO (bwGO) sheets, the OD and the humic fraction of the OD obtained by base digestion, when the parent GO was dispersed by applying sonication, a routine procedure when starting from dried graphite oxide. When sonication is not applied, the amount of OD detected is considerably lower, indicative of its formation before base digestion. The presence of lactols and carboxylic anhydrides as the dominant surface complexes at graphene edges is consistent with all the characterization results, as well as with the general knowledge of surface chemistry of carbon materials ranging from coal to graphite. These findings suggest that the Hummers-Offeman reaction produces a chemical scissor effect during the water/hydrogen peroxide quenching step, yielding a broad size distribution of GO sheets, with little in-plane oxidation and the vast majority of edges being oxidized to form oxepinone-type functionalities. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Ministerio de EconomÃa y Competitividad of Spain (Project CTQ2013-44213-R), and Generalitat Valenciana (project PROMETEOII/2014/007).
Tracheal cryopreservation: caspase-3 immunoreactivity in tracheal epithelium and in mixed glands
Cryopreservation has an immunomodulating effect on tracheal tissue as a result of class II antigen depletion due to epithelium exfoliation. However, not all epithelium is detached. We evaluated the role of apoptosis in the remaining epithelium of 30 cryopreserved tracheal grafts. Caspase-3 immunoreactivity of tracheal epithelium was studied in canine tracheal segments cryopreserved with F12K medium, with or without subsequent storage in liquid nitrogen at -196°C for 15 days. Loss of structural integrity of tracheal mixed glands was observed in all cryopreserved tracheal segments. Caspase-3 immunoreactivity in tracheal mucosa and in mixed glands was significantly decreased, in contrast to the control group and to cryopreserved tracheal segments in which it remained high, due to the effect of storage in liquid nitrogen (P < 0.05, ANOVA and Tukey test). We conclude that apoptosis can be triggered in epithelial cells during tracheal graft harvesting even prior to cryopreservation, and although the epithelial caspase-3 immunoreactivity is reduced in tracheal cryopreservation, this could be explained by increased cell death. Apoptosis cannot be stopped during tracheal cryopreservation
Photoelectric Properties of MOS-like Structures with Twofold SRO Films
AbstractThe optical properties of silicon rich oxide (SRO) have been deeply studied because, between other reasons, they emit an intense photoluminescence (PL) from visible to the near infrared range when excited with UV light. MOS-like structures with SRO film as the active layer have shown an enhanced conductivity under different illumination conditions. In this paper, MOS-like structures with double SRO layer were fabricated in order to have a barrier to isolate the silicon substrate from the active SRO layer. Results show that all structures have a higher current when light shines on them than that obtained under dark conditions. A possible application of this photo-effect can be used to increase the response of photodetectors and silicon solar cells
Local Constraints on the Oscillating G Model
We analyze the observational constraints on the effective Brans-Dicke
parameter and on the temporal variation of the effective gravitational constant
within the context of the oscillating G model, a cosmological model based on a
massive scalar field non-minimally coupled to gravity. We show that these local
constraints cannot be satisfied simultaneously once the values of the free
parameters entering the model become fixed by the global attributes of our
Universe. In particular, we show that the lower observational bound for the
effective Brans-Dicke parameter and the upper bound of the variation of the
effective gravitational constant lead to a specific value of the oscillation
amplitude which lies well below the value required to explain the periodicity
of 128 Mpc h^{-1} in the galaxy distribution observed in the pencil beam
surveys.Comment: PRD, subm., 12 pages, 1 figur
