Robustness of Triple Sampling Inference Procedures to Underlying Distributions

    No full text
In this study, the sensitivity of the sequential normal-based triple sampling procedure for estimatingthe population mean to departures from normality is discussed. We assume only that the underlyingpopulation has finite but unknown first six moments. Two main inferential methodologies areconsidered. First point estimation of the unknown population mean is investigated where a squarederror loss function with linear sampling cost is assumed to control the risk of estimating the unknownpopulation mean by the corresponding sample measure. We find that the behaviour of the estimatorsand of the sample size depends asymptotically on both the skewness and kurtosis of the underlyingdistribution and we quantify this dependence. Moreover, the asymptotic regret of using the triplesampling inference instead of the fixed sample size approach, had the nuisance parameter beenknown, is a finite but non-vanishing quantity that depends on the kurtosis of the underlyingdistribution. We also supplement our findings with a simulation experiment to study the performanceof the estimators and the sample size in a range of conditions and compare the asymptotic and finitesample results. The second part of the thesis deals with constructing a triple sampling fixed widthconfidence interval for the unknown population mean with a prescribed width and coverage whileprotecting the interval against Type II error. An account is given of the sensitivity of the normal-basedtriple sampling sequential confidence interval for the population when the first six moments areassumed to exist but are unknown. First, triple sampling sequential confidence intervals for the meanare constructed using Hall’s (1981) methodology. Hence asymptotic characteristics of the constructedinterval are discussed and justified. Then an asymptotic second order approximation of a continuouslydifferentiable and bounded function of the stopping time is given to calculate both asymptoticcoverage based on a second order Edgeworth asymptotic expansion and the Type II error probability. The impact of several parameters on the Type II error probability is explored for various continuousdistributions. Finally, a simulation experiment is performed to investigate the methods in finite samplecases and to compare the finite sample and asymptotic results

    Get PDF
#1. The investigation was designed to gain information on the role of the three main components of the egg (yolk, albumen and shell) in determining its total weight., with special reference to the variability known to occur when eggs are produced in sequence. #2. The data used consisted of weight measurements made on the whole egg yield of twelve purebred Brown Leghorn pullets from 4th March 1947 to the end of their respective laying cycles. #3. Clutches examined varied in content from 2-6 eggs; the first two classes contained more than halfihe total eggs and the last three slightly under a quarter. #4. The overall mean egg weight was 60.78 grams It 0.258 and the respective corresponding percentages of yolk, albumen and shell, 31.0, 59.7 and 9.4%. #5. The trend for whole egg weight is downward with successive position in the clutch and increasing clutch length; the differences become progressively smaller; that between the first and second egg of the first two clutches is disproportionately large. Egg weight increases as the season under review advances. #6. Yolk and albumen weights showed the same trends to varying degrees. #7. In shells, mean weight fell with increasing clutch size but in the other two groupings (clutch position and season)ruirecse the order found in the first two components, except that in the 5 and 6-egg clutches, the last, first and second eggs were heaviest. #8. Correlations between yollf and albumen weight were significant and positive for the first part of the season under review, but in four birds this relation broke down in the second part. Compared with those which behaved consistently, the eggs from this group showed a slightly larger increase in yolk weight in the second seasonal period, a noticeable lack of increase in albumen and a marked decrease in shell weight. 9. The data on yolk conforms with the views that delayed ovulation increases the weight of the first egg of a clutch and that changes in size may be hormonally controlled. #10. It was concluded that two major factors may affect albumen variations (a) the changing size of a mechanical stimulus consisting of the yolk plus the soluble proteins secreted between the passage of one egg and another, and (b) the time the egg remains in the uterus. #11. Shell variations could be related to the time interval between /- between ovipositions and so to the length of sojourn in the uterus. #12. A final inference is that though sources of stimulation such as hormones, might be expected to increase egg weight through an effect on time of ovulation and the secretion rate of soluble proteins, a possible negative relation between yolk weight and time of oviposition might result in a limiting effect on albumen and shell secretion. The question of the actual relations obtaining between ovulation and oviposition therefore, seems to be vital to any attempts to increase egg size by artificial means

This paper aims to identify the relationship between interest rate fluctuations, the Jordanian markets of stocks, and real estate in terms of trading volume, the price index of the stock market in general, and the shares of the Jordanian real estate companies listed in Amman Stock Exchange as the Jordanian representative of the real estate market. The study was conducted on the period of 2000-2008, given the substantial fluctuations in the interest rate that those years witnessed. Through the use of Pearsons Correlation Coefficient, the study concluded the following: First, there is a positive and strong relationship between interest rate fluctuations and the price index of Amman Stock Exchange. Second, the relationship between interest rate fluctuations and the price index of construction companies is positive with a weak relationship. Third, there is a weak relationship between interest rate fluctuations and the trading volume in the two markets; Finally, Amman Stock Exchange is more sensitive than real estate market to fluctuations of interest rate

We describe multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) encapsulated in thermosensitive, drug-bearing shells and delivered to the tumor site by genetically modified and non-pathogenic strains of bacteria with known affinity to tumors for an effective and minimally invasive protocol for tumor management. The magnetic nanoparticles also serve as a non-invasive imaging contrast agent, heating agent as well as thermometry monitoring agents. We have shown an efficient tumor management on a mouse model utilizing the MNPs. Our studies showed that these novel MNPs significantly reduce the progress of tumor and prolong the animal life and function as an imaging contrast to visually monitor the tumor treatment and evolution

ABSTRACT This study investigates the capacity of the steel section using both AISC and Eurocode approaches by Robot Structure Analysis software. Three types of steel sections were subject to biaxial bending by applying loads to both main axes and examined by both approaches. The concept of Fisher was also adopted as an approach. The findings suggested that the Eurocode approach is more conservative in the design of steel sections subject to biaxial bending as it takes into account the level at which the load is applied, the type of the section whether rolled or welded and its height-to-width ratio (lateral buckling effect), the effects which are not considered in AISC approach. The AISC approach considers the shear center of the section as the level at which the loads are applied. The conservatism of the results was more pronounced when the section is close to H-section. Fisher`s concept of structural design of biaxial bending of structural steel is more conservative than both AISC and Eurocode approaches of analysis

BACKGROUND: Due to their high aesthetic outcome and long-term predictability, laminate veneers have become a common restorative procedure for anterior teeth. However, because of the variety in the preparation designs and the material types, the clinician faces a dilemma of which approach to use. AIM: To compare the survival rate of dental veneers according to different preparation designs and different material types. The sub-aim is to reach a favourable preparation design and material based on scientific evidence. METHODS: Comprehensive electronic search of the dental literature via PUBMED, MEDLINE and Scopus databases was performed using the following keywords: “porcelain veneersâ€, “composite veneersâ€, “all-ceramic veneersâ€, “success of porcelain veneersâ€, “preparation designâ€, “preparation geometryâ€, “patient’s satisfactionâ€. Additionally, references from the selected studies and reviews were searched for more information. RESULTS: Under the limitations of the available literature, the clinician preference is the decisive factor for choosing the preparation design. Nonetheless, incisal overlap preparation seems to have the most predictable outcome from all the preparation designs. CONCLUSION: Porcelain veneers show excellent aesthetic results and predictable longevity of the treatment, while composite veneers can be considered as a good conservative option, but with less durability
